BMW 335i DMTL Pump DIY

Recently I got a service engine soon light on my 2009 BMW 335i, after running the coded I found a 2B3D DMTL Pump (Diagnostic Module Tank Leakage) code. This is part of the Evap system which catches gas fumes and recycles them back into the gas tank. Unfortunately BMW uses a plastic pump that sits very close to the drivers side exhaust which produces a lot of heat which I believe contributes to these parts failing. I ordered an OEM Bosch replacement part. This was a much easier DIY than I was expecting and took me all of 30 minutes to complete.

Tools needed
Ratchet either 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch drive
T-15 Torx bit
8 mm and 10 mm socket

Great video, but one important note. On the 335i at least, the error code is very often caused by the wire rubbing through just before the pump electrical plug. I just fixed mine today by stripping and resoldering the wire. I have read comments from multiple people having this happen. I did not need to replace the pump because I was lucky enough to read about it in an E90/E92 page before buying a new pump.

The N54 is a good engine but as the car ages...expect stuff to start tripping the SES light on a regular.

Yo man I’m confused. I got code 315a fuel tank bleed valve: jammed open. Does that mean replace the charcoal canister?

At 4:55 you snap that electrical connection back on easily with one hand. I cannot get mine back on no matter how I try. Any ideas what is wrong? Pins and plastic all look normal to me.

What else has gone wrong with yours? Mines been a bit of a mess but I think it’s squared away. My water pump was replaced about 15,000 miles ago also so I should be good there.

BMW-E90-HQ mine has been fantastic besides that. Tuned with no issues since 46,000 miles. But everybody’s 335i’s seem to fall apart after 90k and turn into money pits.

I’m at 95k I think it’s going to be good for a while now. I’ve redone a ton of stuff to improve long term reliability.

Oh yes I know them. They’re basically the successor of the Pontiac G8. They’re both Holden Commodores. I had a GTO before I started with BMWs.

Tbh I’m not sure I cleared the code with MHD immediately after and it was gone. If you don’t have a code reader try going to autozone or somewhere similar and have them do it and see what happens.
