EVAP leak testing: BMW DMTL system

Just another video on EVAP leak testing...but wait! It's a BMW! And DMTL stands for "Diagnostic Module for fuel Tank Leakage".
As usual, just because it's a Euro, the labor time for a simple procedure easily doubles or triples...not to mention the lack of information available.
Anyways, once we figure out the system, the OTC Leak Tamer does short work of finding our problem. The fix turns out to be surprisingly inexpensive.
Enjoy!
Ivan

It's all part of the business. Sometimes it turns out to be something simple. Diag. charge is for your knowledge and experience, not based on how simple or complex the actual repair may be.

at the dealer we have a test plan for the dmtl pump. it activates the pump and seals off the vent. it will then run for a few minutes and check for major, minor, and micro leaks. it's a good test to see if the leak is currently present. but I've found that it's sometimes inaccurate in that it will say the system is leak free even though I still find a leak with the smoke machine. there is also a special tool we use to connect to the vent side of the dmtl to smoke it from the pump forward. because as you know the purge valve is a pain to get to. the tool is just a clear hose with the special plastic connector at the end haha

That Beemer doesn't look like a whole lot of fun to work on. I've done a few Volvos and VWs, but never a BMW. Hate when they cover everything with plastic ... like they're trying to hide something. Really liking that OTC unit - saw Eric O. had the same one a couple vids back. The problem with the paint can one is you can't tell if anything is flowing or not. That gauge is great. I might have to make the investment eventually. Best bang for the buck that I've found so far.

many older BMW gas hatches have a spring loaded click mechanism, just push in the rear of the hatch it release and pops it out slightly, when you close it, it resets the spring mechanism. was funny seeing you open it, funnier yet was me trying to start the first keyless one I had to move, cussed it for over 5 minutes. not used to having to step on brakes to start a car :))

It's easy to check a gas cap....Go and buy an 800.00 fuel cap tester and then test at least 40 or more car's fuel caps so it can pay for itself...Just giving the sarcastic response to the naive that would ask ....Furthermore, assuming the cap passes, what then?...Still have to go thru the leak detection procedures as you did....Good job as usual Ive....

I think you test the cap with an adapter that applies pressure then vacuum. I think caps protect the system from over pressures in case of a plugged vent valve. it also prevents a faulty purge valve and a plugged vent from sucking in and collapsing the tank. I saw it in a video

I am having the same problem on my 2003 BMW Z for 3.0 convertible, I bought a new gas cap after cleaning the existing one that was the green type. The new one sold on Amazon and eBay alike. Looks just like yours and when I put that one on the “check gas cap“ light started coming on more frequently. It seems like it only happens during cold weather conditions but it’s been cold lately and I need to get my inspection. Done to renew my tag. I already replaced the solenoid. The one in the engine compartment that allows vapors to be burned, flowing through the intake but from what I see I imagine it’s the gas cap and or possibly a fuel line leak, or Yvette line leak above the fuel tank. Normally on these cars when you hit the unlock button for the doors, a solenoid also unlocks the fuel cap where it can be pressed open that is broken on my car and so I am wondering if the fuel cap that the car came with when I bought, it is actually the proper fuel cap for the car. Somebody has been doing something back there. I just can’t tell what. These are great cars and it is nice to deal with small problems, but even the smallest of problem with eve app system she’s fd us

I thought the gas cap was the first place we checked for this problem. Sure, the smoke test verifies it, but the slight leak is most often the gas cap being either faulty, or very often just not tightened properly. Many techs will check the cap and then clear the code. I know many vehicle owners that have been trained to reseat / tighten the gas cap when they get a CEL soon after getting fuel.

looked like original cap, so if over 3 years old/high millage, always replace them. in Ohio counties where they have e-check, they pressure test gas caps and give you a new one if it leaks, if they don't have one, you get a $5 gift card and have to get it yourself.

It's frustrating when you can't find the info needed to diagnose a problem but if the manufacture will not release the info you're almost outta luck. With a little know how you were able to find the problem. I would say that at least half the evap leaks i find are fuel cap, filler tube rust and corrosion related. If i'm in doubt weather the cap was't tight enough or not i replace the cap because i know it will come back to bite me. Personally i don't even like opening the hood on those things.

Hi I was sure you were going to find a small leak at the DMTL connector on some BMW it's common usually what I do is unplugged the air filter hose at the DMTL and then cap it off then unplug the connector to see if smoke would come out obviously I check the cap if it will leak I have seen some caps with cracked rubber seal you can buy them separately lastly make sure the purge valve at the motor seals properly I know with experience on VW with the engine code BPY the 2.0 litres turbo engine the one with a timing belt is prone to leak and trigger EVAP fault codes and buy the way you're Girls friend or wife is really pretty and seems to have a real good sense of humour bye driving an antique vehicle to work.

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics yes it can change from wear ann mechanical resistance of the motor , I am smog technician and on one of my amog licence update class I had 16 hours . for evap system of any manufacture I learn that hands on vehicles every system the teacher knew what was wrong and after as going on theory we had to find the problems on vehicles . it was at skyline colleague I was surprise that the school had like 15 diferente vehicles . any way the dm pump.is used on Europeans kia , Hyundai same set up but Chrysler is using the same principal if current to to test for leaks , I learn there on gm first thing to check for evap leaks codes is the pressure sensor data koef. as this is very common failures, the sensor resistance goes open = 5 volts computer asumes fulm vaccum you get codes fir leaks or vent solenoid circuits but never fir sensor. Nissan use a temperature sensor and the principal fir them are as the pressure increases the temperture increase too. nice chatting with you Ivan since I am your fan I have learn a lot from you . I have a question I just bough a pico scope anf I have ti create customs probes . like for example my pressure tranducer is at 330 mv = 0 sea level and each 1 mv = to 1 psi can you help me how ti create this please the scope is still on the box . thank you

Every time you show a BMW Ivan, it looks like they are aggravating vehicles to work on where there is little information. And let's not forget the 'Power of German Engineering'. WTF was going on with that hose. One thing I've learned about the engineers from Germany is that they are not going to use any common sense in their thoughts to make something simple. What would seem so obvious in a design will have to be made as complicated as possible. Fortunately, I haven't worked on one of these things and I am not looking forward to it either. Great work Ivan and was wondering why you just didn't tightened the gas cap :) Hold on Ivan, I'm just joking and I agree with everything that you said about doing a leak test. Ivan, great video's and a beautiful lady! Would be interested in finding out where abouts in PA you are, just up the road from me is my guess. Would love to have you come watch my wife drive her demolition derby cars that she builds (Yes mostly her now that I've taught her a lot)... But onto my pet peeve, it's NOT the fault of Alldata (someData),. They provide all of the information provided by the manufacturer. Same as Identifix and all the others.

EVAP leaks are 90% loose gas caps because the seals go bad on the cap, or people forget to turn it until it clicks. Im a BMW Tech in Dallas. And yes, BMW loves their dumb plastic hose connectors. LOL

Again, most of their hoses are designed in such a way you can only buy the hoses from them.Smart.

BMW, Bankrupt My Wallet. You'd think a fancy vehicle like this would have what my 2001 Buick lesabre has which is a loose gas cap notice that comes up on the display on the instrument cluster, I guess they want you to go the dealer have it diagnosed then they'll sell you a brand new genuine BMW gas cap for a thousand dollars, plus shop time and tax, people who buy these cars used especially usually don't have a clue what they're getting themselves into, there are plenty of videos about them, oil leaks are ridiculous on them. My neighbors friend asked me if I work on BMWs so I said that depends on what it is wrong with it, he said his aunt has one he was she was selling and he was thinking about buying it, he went on to say that it had an oil leak but otherwise it was in good condition, I told him a out my other neighbor with an x3 I just worked on with just an oil leak, I advised him to not even consider it, I asked him if the check engine light was on and of course he said yes because they always are in these cars, he never mentioned it again, as Scotty says, those things are endless money pits.

Working with my son on an engine swap of a 2006 x5 3.0l Them Germans really like plastic and O rings. Luckily you can get a lot of that plastic hose crap on ebay fairly cheap now. If you work on a BMW your gonna break some plastic
