BMW 5 Series e60 peeling Gear shifter DIY restoration.
Hi everyone and welcome to another Bimmer Fixer video.
In this video I will show you how to fix and restore your peeling and damaged Gear shifter in your BMW e60 or even e90
So, after 150,000 miles the gear shifter has started to flake and make a mess and also look horrible so it time for some DIY restoration.
In this video I show you how to remove the shifter itself and the piece of trim that is damaged, then I walk you through the process of preparing and painting the shifter trim.
The paint I used in this video was Rust-Oleum Multi-Purpose Premium Spray Paint 400ml Metallic in Gun Metal Grey. You obviously don’t have to go with that colour but I think it suits my interior nicely and leave a lovely finish. I have put the link to the one I used below.

Heads up those tabs push to the outside. My shifter wasn't coming off so I just popped it off in place. I couldn't really see and ended up breaking one of the tabs no biggie. Mine is in worse shape. So I decided to strip it all the way down. I'm priming first with primer and shooting it with the gunmetal! I'll let you know how it turns out! Thanks for the info

Your videos are brilliant and has helped me bring back the sparkle to my car I’m going to respray the gear stick but mine is a shiny silver colour, please can you point me in the right direction for the best spray to use thanks😊

Any tips on getting the trim back on? I've gotten mine off, painted and I just can't get the two teeth at the top to seat back in place no matter how much I try and ease them to the side or push down! Thanks for the video 😊

Hi Peter, thanks for your question. So it's held up really well, iv had no chipping or paint coming off exposing the white plastic underneath. It has picked up one or two marks but nothing serious or very noticible. Let me know how you get on or if you have any further questions 👍🏻

Don't spray around cats if you don't want their hair on your paint job. Spitfire shot would of been a bonus. Instead of spraying you can also use a vinyl wrap with a textured design.

Hi Arnold, absolutely agree it's the bloody neighbours cat that never comes near me unless im making a video 😂 it did it again on my last video too. Yeah the Spitfire would have been amazing to show! I did think about using vinyl but wasn't sure if it would last being on the shifter. Do you think it's tough enough and wouldn't wear off?

​@@TheBimmerFixer LOL..cats like videos of them. You could spray some clear laquer on the vinyl to make it more hard wearing although the vinyl I buy is for trim panels and pretty tough stuff.
