Just for the sake of clarity, that isn't an M Sport. M Sport cars were 2003 only. You have a 540i Sport. When you look up the options it has the "m sport suspension" but that is not the same as an actual M Sport which included significantly more changes compared to a standard 540.

Best mod I’ve done on my m-sport is a wavetrac differential. 1100$ well spent. Have 275’s in the rear and it launches hard with that diff. Eibach sway bars also a great upgrade

well said well put I am a BMW Tech absolutely right about the 540 in my opinion BMW ever built I currently home to E39 2001 six-speed and a 99 528 I buy as many as you can for as cheap as you can nice ride

Hey I’m about to buy a 2001 bmw 540i m sport with 140k miles. Do you think that’s too much miles for such a car as this?

If the car has been properly maintained by previous owners I would not worry too much. It is an almost 20 year old German car so it will not be as reliable as Toyota pick up but if properly maintained and loved it should be a great car. I am by no means a BMW tech but from my ownership experience and what I have heard from friends and my BMW tech, that would be my inclination. Good luck with the purchase I love these cars, they don't make cars like these anymore!

I live in VT and I swear I saw this car on Craigslist recently, did you just buy it at the time or have you sold it since? Also, I swear that winding road looks familiar; Is this over around Eastman?

Isaiah Handly Good eye! Yes you did see this car on Craigslist recently! I just sold it about a month ago. And the road is in Grantham New Hampshire I highly recommend it it’s a fun one.

That's not a M-sport, you have a standard E39 540i with M style wheels!

Actually I thought the same thing before I bought my car but I ran the vin and the build sheet lists the m sport package. In 2003, the m sport 540is got more aggressive front facia and a limited slip differential. Earlier cars like mine didn't get the limited slip diff or front facia but still got the suspension upgrade.

noah trahar Thank you sir, I appreciate it! Timing chain guides are a worry on high mileage E39s but my car is not showing any signs of them failing and is running strong and hopefully does so for many more miles.

This really is a great video. Lots of great demonstration as well as key info on the car itself. I currently own a 05 dodge neon 5 speed. It has a carbon fiber roof and has a really loud exhaust, I'm interesting in getting something like your BMW with more torque. I'm still in high school so it is hard to find a decent car... let me know for feedback

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the video. Torque is certainly not a problem in the 540i. It is expensive to fix but is a really fun car when it works. If you are serious make sure to find one that isn't rusty and put a radiator in it as soon as you buy. Original radiators are problematic and are a common issue. A good one will probably cost about 5000-7000. I love my car and is a great used BMW. Theres more on the way!

Was the 99 540i m-sport available in automatic? I’m looking at a 540i with those wheels and the seats with the seat bottom slide out bolsters. Is that an M Sport?

My understanding is if you ordered a pre face lift (pre 2001) 540 with three pedals you also got the M Sport goodies. 2001-2003, you could get M-Sport with the automatic. 2003 M Sports also had a factory limited slip diff. If you want an M-sport with the auto box, see if you can find a wagon, 540 wagons were auto only and really really cool.
