BMW 630i manual review and first impressions. Is this the best BMW that no one talks about?
The BMW E63 generation relaunched the BMW 6 series 14 years after the first generation E24 ended production. Not only did the E63 relaunch the 6 series model, but it also saw the introduction of the all new 6 cylinder petrol engine, the N52. The N52 would lead to a further development in the direct injection N53, but would ultimately serve to be the last in a long line of naturally aspirated BMW petrol powered straight six engines.
In the early 2000's BMW were still offering a manual option for every variant of the 6 Series and here we drive the 3 litre N52B30 powered car equipped with a manual gearbox.
With the six series being developed to house the much larger N62 V8 and also the S85 V10 in the M6, when equipped with the N52 six cylinder, the 6 series becomes much lighter and more affordable to run, when compared with the larger capacity models.

I can relate to your review. I bought a 630 auto 1 year ago. Never considered the 6 series, forgot it even existed in a 3litre form. I was a looking for an e92 and by filtering the engine displacement it showed up. Went for a test drive and was shocked. Went in expecting it would be heavy and feel like an old barge, oh boy was I wrong. Excellent feel, feedback, nicely controlled, felt light on its feet and drove flat but smooth, mine has the dynamic drive and active steering. No one believes the claimed weight of the car at least on paper. Enough power and aura from the engine. I fell in love with it. I preach about this car, it is really a forgotten gem and I have owned multiple M cars in the past. So much car for the money, definately a keeper.

I'd also go for the automatic (often do loooong drives) and not the N53 to avoid direct injection for a few worse mpg.

Agree. Very happy owner of a manual E63 N52. Love it and its soo underrated! My absolute favorites: The steering, the N52 character and absolutely nailing it in 2. to 7000 in a tunnel🦈😂👍

Owned my 2008 E63 630i for 5 years now about to hit 100k miles. Exported it to Germany for work ragged it on the Autobahn for just under 2 years and have continued since reimporting it to the UK. No major issues, just brake disc and pad replacement and 4 tyres at the same time. Only cost me £8,500, its fast, handles well, relatively light considering being longer than a range rover. Not to mention massive boot and great interior. I believe it cost the 1st buyer in the region of £65,000+. Highly reccomend them.

Thanks! Ultimately I would say that the 2 Z's would make for a much more sporting and sharper drive, but the 6 series definitely has an honesty to the way it drives and a charm of it's own. I also can't vouch for how it would present itself with the infinitely more common auto 'box. Swapping cogs with the sport button on is a big part of the fun for me!

I also want a 350z but 6 series are quite a lot cheaper around here. I'm currently looking at a manual 630 that is almost half the cost of what a 350z goes for.

I love my 630i Auto !!!! An absolute pleasure to drive. A luxurious car at an inexpensive price. Well made, well engineered. Vastly under appreciated, I think most people presume they will be expensive to run but that's just not true.

I averaged 17mpg in Germany and nowadays living in the UK with it I average 28mpg. I know some people that get 35+ but I like to have fun!

My Z4 Coupe has the same N52 engine and it is a delight to drive - very torquey and grunty. As much fun driving it normally almost as much as giving it a bit. The ratios in the Z4 are quite short as it pulls around 2700ish rpm at 70 in 6th. Great review of a really good looking and interesting car. I think they have become better with age. Good work that man!

Just stumbled across your video, nice review! I love my N53, what a drive! I do like a manual but when you stick the auto box into manual mode and hit the sport button, it handles like its on rails and eats twisty country roads for breakfast. A friend was behind me once and remarked how flat it stayed around the the bends. Love it! It's not been without its niggles mind, and it's due back in for a look over for a couple of things, but the drive, especially with lowered suspension, the Pilot Sport 5 tyres and an afternarket exhaust really make it an experience everytime. The design's not for everyone but this is probably the first car I've had that I look back at every time I park up. The e63 is so uncommon I feel like a kid whenever I see another one 😄

I love a 2+2 and currently own an E63 6-Series (Mine is a 650i) and absolutely love it. Ok, the car is big, but you can see where the size goes; the massive boot, made even bigger by the Bangle-Butt, the useable back seats and lots of front space all add up. I love the interiors, it's really stylish (especially with the aluminium trim) and still feels modern enough. It's a car that you can do huge distances in with no effort. And the car came with isofix as standard, at the time Audi charged quite a lot for that and so many GT's couldn't have it all, something I love about the car. I also love that the 'basic' engine is the N52, which is a brilliant engine so any E63 is going to be something special. Even the diesel suits the car because of its torque. And the V8's aren't that heavy either, around 1600kg, which was fairly light for the day and is positively featherweight today. The 6-Speed auto is decent, it's a traditional ZF torque-convertor. The auto suits the V8's, but I think the manual is probably the best choice for the 3.0l, that engine deserves a manual gearbox. Best bit is servicing; it's 'just' a BMW which means they aren't expensive to maintain. My biggest issue with my 6-Series is that it's way too good; I wanted a relatively cheap GT and accidentally bought something very special that is going to be almost impossible to replace.

I couldn't agree more....although respectively the V8's are 190 kgs heavier than the 630i.....and that's the 645i, the 650i is heavier. Fantastic cars !! SO UNDERRATED !!

I have a 2005 e63 630i manual with 67,000 miles on the clock. I adore the thing, it has got under my skin, i've nearly sold it a couple of times but never been able to. I do have a thing for old BMW's though, i also have an e30 which i'm in the process of putting a m20 2.7 stroker in and an e46 Compact with a m54b30 in it.

Just bought a 630i coupe (auto) as an occasional /weekend trips vehicle. For me the 3 - litre - 6 normally aspirated is the one to go for. Its a delight to cruise around in for 2 people, effortless, adequate power and silk gear shifts with just enough old school feel to be involving. Very high quality interior feel. Hope to keep mine a good few years and the maintenance and fuel is do-able - the fuel was never a particular worry anyway as its not the daily driver.... road tax a bit steep though. All in all, a fine "modern classic". Wish I could have had one when brand new. I love the GT feel (in my 50s has something to do with it I guess 😃) was looking at Z4 etc but far too bumpy and uncomfortable for relaxing days out.... And I wasnt sure about a convertible as the hood must be classed as a separate maintenance item again. The E63 is something of a bargain these days in my opinion, find a nice one with a good history file. Fine motors.

A nice reminder what’s available used, modern enough but still analogue enough to satisfy in a drive by wire age. Checking the used car sites these are stunning value for money. Great video and I really enjoyed this left field choice as well as having a soft spot for your 205.

@@diamondk2354 For that kind of money you'll get nothing but issues. You should look for a more expensive, but a better maintained example.

Great video mate. Currently an E92 320i owner but I've had the 630i (auto) on my radar for a while now. I've had a few test drives and will probably make the move over within the next year or so. They're definitely overlooked and less of a common option which is what draws appeal for me. Plus they had the option of having a panoramic roof which the 1/3/5/7 weren't offering at the time. I love its looks too especially from the back and the side. I just wish their V8 units weren't so fragile otherwise that's what I'd have gone for

I have a 2007 630 i and its its a great car. You can switch to manual change and with sport mode makes it sharper to drive. Manual boxes these days are getting less popular due to constant traffic jams. I was stuck on the M25 for three hours stop start the other week and was very glad of the auto! I have owned the Mercedes SL range including the SL 350 but I need the extra seats in the rear. Certainly on a level with the Mercedes.

Oh nice! The rear seats are really useful, especially if you have kids, they almost cocoon them in. In fact, it makes the car kind of hard to replace, especially when you factor in the current value. Thanks for watching.

I hated the 6 series when it was first released because of the rear end, but it’s a car that has aged really really well. They still feel really, really well made. They’re a proper reverse tardis though; huge external dimensions but very little room on the inside! I came close to buying an LCI 630i when getting out of my M140i but bottled it because it had no history of any if the N53 issues having been done. Someone snapped it up whilst I was faffing. I ended up with a 130i LE, also powered by the N52.

Great video! Having had a 328i, e36 M3 (x2) and a 330ci Convertible, I do love the bmw sixes, and well know a car is certainly more (or less!) than the sum of its parts... Currently looking for a 635d cab, and now have a 630 Coupe on my watch list too :)

Great video, I hope you created this video before! It is quite an unsung hero those 630i with a manual gearbox. When Covid struck I was in a hunt for my first BMW, and I looked at those with some doubt at the beginning but at that point they where so affordable (£3.5 - 5K) the only downside I guess where the miles all seem to be (100k+), I guess people cruise a lot in them and I can see why, funny enough when I was about to go and have a look at some E63's, a beautiful 2006 E92 330i manual came up in auto trader, and the rest is history. Same as you I always like the more compact styling of the 3 series coupe, but I will always keep in mind a 630i if I want to replace the E92. Almost 2 years now, I am in love with the BMW brand (I bought an E21 too recently), but specially with the N52 engine, what a superb engine with good power, reliability, and reasonably low running costs! I think I've seen your E92 330i video like 50 times now ! Keep up the great work !

Brilliant stuff. Sounds like we've been on similar car buying journeys but a manual 630i came my way first. It is a different car to the 3 series, definitely more refined and relaxed but a surprising amount of interaction and fun to be had too. Both are great and above all the N52 is such a fantastic engine, it offers an incredible balance of everything a driver needs. They can leak some oil however and make sure the electronic water pump is replaced before 100k miles, it will fail at some point. Thanks for watching!

Oh yes, constant battery drain, starting problems then breakdown... First I had to get my head round working on a BMW... Removed aux belt, alternator, manifold and ccv to get to the starter motor, that and the alternator went for testing, Alt fine, starter rebuilt to factory spec. I got new gaskets for everything and new aux, tensioner, pulley and rebuilt it. Now it's a brilliant car, really feels special and puts a smile on my face 😊

This is really an overlooked gem! It gets looked down on for not being a V8 but was that ever available with a manual gearbox? If not, then i feel like this could actually be the best spec for the E63 - certainly the one i would go for. It's really much of the same philosophy as my 406 Coupé, just a little more up-market even though the design is very Bangle in good and bad. I do like it though, and this is without a doubt top of my list if I'm ever replacing the 406 for one reason or another. Excellent content as always!

It turns out that BMW, in the UK at least, did offer a manual for all the variants, expect the the M6. In the real world it seems that hardly anyone chose to spec the 6 Series with a manual gearbox and I think the only reason the model I've purchased has one is cost! As I mentioned in the review, it's quite basic, but for me it almost adds to it's charm and makes it feel more old school, it would make for a great way to travel across the continent. Honestly the 630i will be so much more reliable than the 645 or 650i. Although the V8 sounds better I'd rather have peace of mind. So I stopped looking at the V8 models

Don’t see many manual 630i’s.. I have an auto ‘06 630i Sport with 84k miles.. Had it almost 4 years now and still enjoy the ownership experience. Recently had my first significant issue.. smoke when booting it hard. Turned out due to the constant short journeys I do, just a mile each way to the gym each day that the PCV/CCV valve was completely blocked with oil, the associated pipes & the intake too. Replaced the lot and it’s running sweet again. Learning point is, the car needs to be driven, preferably a trip to Mexico once a week 😉 Rare cars these days, can’t remember the last time I saw another on the road. I have just changed the standard style 218 wheels for 20” Veemann VC7 alloys, some Bimecc spacers & dropped it slightly with some Eibach springs.. Subtle change, but really improves the look..

Coincidentally, I've had the whole PCV/CCV replaced too! Maybe the 6 Series doesn't tend to attract the same kind of enthusiastic drivers as some of the other BMW models, meaning they don't get taken to Mexico as often! Thanks for watching!

Great review. Looking at one of these myself. Do you think it's worth holding out for a manual? I've always had manuals, and I'm coming from an e46 330 Touring manual. I wonder if the auto will make it boring, or if it's well suited to it... Doubtless there will be more choice of cars with an auto box...

I haven't actually driven an auto, so couldn't say for sure! I might be getting the chance to try one soon, so will report back if I do. I'm kind of surprised at how well it works with the manual, but then the BMW N/A 6 cylinders are such enjoyable engines to use! Thanks for watching.

I've had both manual (for 1 year) and auto (for 12 years and counting): E63 LCI with the N53B30 engine. Being a GT car and given that the ZF 6HP gearbox is awesome, I love the auto more: the sportiness is really there, while cruising is nicer. I also own an MX-5 (NC1), manual, that I would never ever buy with automatic gearbox.

Regarding efficiency, is the gearing a bit longer? As a grand tourer, it could make it a bit more efficient on a run as well as other factors mentioned.

I’ve got the 630i in stratus grey 2006 and a 640i in Orion silver 2012. I wish I could put the n52 in the newer shape. I like the new tech in the 640, but the 630 sounds better. I was offered such a small amount for the 630 in trade in value I decided to keep it. Love pressing the sport button and it changes the car totally. Bloody I drive screen has gone blank though.... I secretly hope that they start to go up in value

My idrive went too, I sent the ccc unit away to " BBA Reman" they fixed it for £325. ( A FRACTION OF THE PRICE OF A NEW ONE) You get a lifetime guarantee. There's a video on utube showing you how to remove it it's quite simple. They arrange pick up and delivery. Mike Brewer used them on Wheeler Dealers, Audi TT speedo binnacle if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

I had a 630i manual.. felt light for the size of the car. I still felt it needed a v8, and enjoyed my auto clk500 more. Not to detract from what a good all rounder the 630i is.

Me either until I did a search! Back then BMW still offered plenty of manuals it seems, it’s just that not many people chose them, especially in the larger models with the bigger capacity engines.

Super concise vlog! Nice...oldskoolish...modernish classic, becoming rare and more desirable...Looks beautiful... put auto box into manual mode+sport button (when engine is at running temperatures)... boosh the E63 3.0i is transformed. Great coupe,and looking better as the Years pass by. Engines do suffer oil leaks, and suspension bushes fail so commonly... Regular oil changes at least yearly is paramount. Hidden gem absolutely:-)

I currently drive a 2006 320d SE, manual, with M sport wheels, not remapped or anything. Owned it for 15 months now and it has been supremely reliable, fun and frugal. But I don't like the cloth seats, poor audio system with dodgy pixels and the dual mass fly wheel has the usual rattle when the clutch is pressed which is annoying. So I am looking to get something more special, with leather and in automatic form for around £3800 or less. I have been looking at Merc CLS, which I think are gorgeous but in my price range they are models with the OM642 320 CDI or the M272 V6 petrol and come paired with the 7G tronic gearbox. All of which seem to have more potential reliability issues than any of the BMW M57 or N52 options with ZF automatic boxes. I would prefer turbo diesel power for economy reasons and the remap ability, but I'm realising that what I might lose in economy I might gain in less spent on repair bills, not to mention petrol is cheaper (though I think I would try and stick to super unleaded e5). And if the 630i can achieve 40+mpg on a run, then diesel savings might not be as big as I first thought. I know I definitely do not want anything with air suspension. So the 6 series makes alot of sense, I too was worrying that it might feel abit huge and heavy, so thanks for this excellent video. Subscribed.

You find yourself in an interesting position with cars! I'm not sure if the automatics are as good on fuel as the manual, with a mix of driving I average around 30mpg, but it certainly does cruise in the high 30's, or as I said in the video 40+ is more than possible if I'm on a good motorway run. The N52 is a good engine that is starting to gain a lot of attention, but there are a few issues, check for oil leaks (it must have some), main ones being the oil filter housing and the valve cover gasket. The other main issue would be the electric water pump will need replacing at some stage because they can fail anywhere from 60k miles to 120k miles. The E63 gen 6 Series certainly offer a lot of car for the money at the moment! Thanks for watching and the sub!!

Yes you are correct. 630i LCI manual is 100kg lighter than e90 330i LCI:) and they both run 6.5 seconds till 100km. And they both can be tuned to go 5.5 seconds with reasonable money. And it will cower 100kms with 12 litters in mixed cycle at ease.

Nice! I wonder what mods would be needed? I have thought that making the gear ratios shorter would make the car much more accelerative, but you might then loose some of the long range GT ability and efficiency. Thanks for watching!

Also, the E46 325ci has been pretty reliable. 300.000km and no problems so far, since I got it with 250.000km. Can I expect the same from a 630i?

@@jpedroosm Keep the E46. It's sportier and more reliable. The E63 is more special, but not as sporty, plus you may run into some issues.

Interesting, from my research Autocar figured the 645i when new at 1620kg and the 630i is listed as being 130kg lighter than the 645, most of the data sites I've found list the 6 series range as being between 1,490-1,930 kg, so I figure somewhere in the 15's wouldn't be too far off. I know Autocar carry out all of the figures themselves on a full road test, so the 1620kg for the 645i should be accurate. Sadly for whatever reason there aren't any cup holders in the rear of the arm rest on our car, just a storage cubby hole. Maybe these became available on later models or different specs? Having the windows down works a treat, you're right! It allows much more of that 6 cylinder exhaust note to be heard, unfortunately I couldn't capture this on film quite the way it sounds to my ears! I used to have an E91 330i M Sport and I'd love to try an E92 someday, I can imagine they're terrific. I'm also harboring a desire to try out the E87 130i to cover most of the N52 model range! I guess all that's left after that would be the E60 530i and a 730! Must stop thinking about the 1 series.... Thanks for watching, appreciate the feedback!

interestingly according to numbers from various sites 0-60 times of 630i and 330i are equal and some numbers say that e63 is even 0.2 sec faster than 330i. WIth same power I conclude that its possible that e63 is lighter because what else would've make it faster then if nopt the weight? So I guess their weight is possibly equal. But there are just numbers, reality might be totaly different

I have to admit that it looks like a brilliant car. But I don’t know why for some reason, I feel like the straight six noise just don’t sounds right on this type of luxury ride… To me, it sounds like it deserves something better from noise perspective, like if the L6 was « too cheap »… That being said, I see thé appeal !

I get you! The 6 does make a great noise, but you certainly can't hear enough of it from the cabin, especially in factory spec. Thanks for watching!

Ulez is a real problem here in the UK. A friend of mine used to have a 635D, it was a very capable car.

It's hard to understate how much our perception of these cars was shaped by Clarkson and how he more often than not was talking complete and utter sh1tballs. Great review. Itchy trigger finger...
