The factory does not measure with dynos, so there are always difference for every car. BMW diesels are just much better and have wider power band, so it has advantage over the mercedes diesel.

Now imagine what the 8 series diesel would be like if they chose the 50d engine instead of the 40d. Crazy. Btw. I also think that you should’ve gone for the A7 biTDI instead of this A8. Would’ve been a fairer match. Expected much more from the E400d though, hopefully the new CLS with this same engine and 4matic will perform better.

BMW used to offer a V8 diesel (M67D40 (238/245/258) / M67D44 (299/329)) between 1998-2009. It was replaced by the N57 50d. If BMW had kept their V8 diesel going - like Audi - and bumped output to ~400 PS to create a x50d model, then it would have been a very different story.

Well, that was closer than I expected. The Mercedes was absolutely underperforming, though. The lightest car with the most HP and torque and still it didn't win anything. Disappointing. The Audi did a pretty good job overall. Well done.

Have all three engines been 'run in' because that can make a huge difference. All 3 should be run in. eg. If two identical BMWs raced and one had 500 miles and one had 5000 miles then we would expect the 5000 mile BMW to win hands down. The BMW is Matts personal car so does that mean he's done more mileage than the (possibly brand new) audi and merc? Running it in more and loosening up the engine? Quite Possibly. To be a totally fair race all cars should be properly run in with 5k - 10k miles of varied driving under their bonnets. Love this channel by the way.
