Finally, I was always a bit dissapinted when you posted W123 updates. I really like that you want to keep the M40 because everyone would do at least a M42 swap and the rebuild cost would not be much higher. And its rare to see someone putting work and effort into a M40 or M43.

I'll be honest with you Zoki, the mercedes was a bit of gamble for me. I'm starting a restoration company seperate from YT and the Merc is my first customer. I decided to film it as the owner wanted me to, but I think it will be the last time I do it. I'll stick to BMW's and my own projects for Restore It once the Merc is done. And yes, I think I am going to keep it M40 just for originality. It will be nice to have a perfect example of a 316i touring.

I would have assumed that by now you know not to paint mating surfaces (the front crankshaft oil seal housing) or surfaces for interference fits like the bearing in the front casing of the alternator. That casing is now not fully driven down over the bearing. You can see that the washer on top of the bearing does not protrude above the casing like it did when you took it apart (see 0:20). Besides that you tried to pull the casing down over the bearing by tightening the surrounding screws, that is not a good idea. You've no bend the casing and put a significant amount of axial pretension on the bearing from which is will prematurely fail (it is not a bearing that is designed to take this load). You can already see by the way you turn the shaft that it is not rotating as freely as it should. I recommend you take that apart again and take of the paint on the seating surface of the bearing in the front casing. It should be a light interference fit (just enough to prevent spinnig of the outer bearing race) not requiring any force to assemble. Also take of the paint form the mating surfaces of the crankshaft oil seal housing or you end up with a misaligned seal relative to the crankshaft (causing it to leak). Furthermore you've misassembled the power steering pump. The vanes have a sharp side and a polished rounded of side. The rounded polished side should be facing outside facing the cam ring. Currently you have assembled them at random. If you do not fix this your pump will fail in seconds! There is an undercut in the rotor that should face the snap-ring, it's hard to see but it also appears to be mounted the wrong way. Also: assemble everything pre-lubricated. Please read the factory repair manual on these things before you work on them. I have digital copy for the E30 that i'm happy to send you if you don't have it. Good luck, love the content btw!

Agreed. He also didn't clean all of the interior rust out of the alternator, which will cause more problems in the long run. It'll probably be fine for now, but it'll lower the life expectancy of that part significantly, and cause issues long before it fully dies.

And most of this work is "free" too. Costs almost nothing to clean, sand, and repaint good parts! Lots of old cars have parts that are no longer available, and I'm sure dozens of salvageable examples are rotting in scrap yards because somebody threw it out.

its really hard to tell from the wide angle disassembly and limited closeups of assembly, but it looks the like power steering pump vanes have a flat edge and round edge and that they were installed randomly. if i am correct, youre gonna wanna go back in there and make sure all of the vanes have the rounded edge facing outward otherwise you, the pump housing and the steering rack are all gonna have a bad time.
@raf530i3 жыл бұрын
Hello, just a small advice: remember to fill the power steering pump with the proper fluid. The internal parts are not corrosion treated, but that`s ok because the pumps are tested in the factory and this makes their interior to remain oiled after the test, effectively protecting them from corrosion until the pumps are installed on the engines, on the cars and so on. If you plan on leaving this pump sitting for some time before the first start, fill it and hand spin it to make sure everything is coated with oil.

Please in the future, don't hammer bearings onto shafts..... Take a low temperature torch and heat the inner race up enough, until the outer race is just hot enough that you can take the heat. It will slip right onto the shift at that point. If you don't feel safe with a torch, they make bearing race heaters.

How do you deal with finding a correct replacement for a non-standard bolt or screw someone used as a bandaid? I find parts diagrams are horrible for that research, and for older cars even if you did find the part number, you probably can't order a replacement. Check the radiator and hoses. Make sure no air is trapped in the system. A clogged radiator will also contribute to overheating. You can also try flushing your cooling system. Hope this helps.
@15dejo3 жыл бұрын
@@houseofno I forget to tell that I bleed the system, change all hoses clean the radiator, and when temperature is high the whole radiator is warm so he is not blocked, I think the clutch of fan on water pump is the main issue I have a litle video but I can't upload in comment right here
@houseofno3 жыл бұрын
@@15dejo If the fan clutch is not engaging, that would contribute to your issue. Fan clutches do wear out, and when they do, your engine is not able to engage the cooling fan when needed and disengage it when it is not. This assumes you have an engine fan driven by the crankshaft pulley. Some engines have an electrical fan which would then be an electrical issue in your case. Replacing the fan clutch is the next step I would proceed to troubleshoot. Does the fan rotate easily by hand with the engine off? You can also turn on the engine and watch to see if the fan engages when the engine reaches operating temperature. If it doesn't, then you have found the likely culprit for your cooling issue.
@15dejo3 жыл бұрын
