BMW E38 E39 E53 E46 signs of a failing ignition switch plus how to replace it

After dealing with those issues for the last 5 years, steering wheel up/down, radio working on and off, wipers stopping in the middle of a storm at 70 mph (almost got killed), airbag light always on, abs light on, cruise control working on and off, horn working on and off, trying to find the bad connection without success and ready to junk this beautiful car. Very informative video. Had strange cluster issues on my 323ci " rpm going to 0, temp. going to hot, fuel economy needle staying at 0, a/c compressor disengaging and cruise icon going out. All this happened while coasting coming to a stop. It would resurrect its self 7 or 8 times in a row in the same drive cycle, then no return from the dead, till ignition was turned off and on again. A BMW tech told me replace the ignition switch, but also google "E53 ignition switch" to confirm some similarities, saw this KZbin video...replaced switch...all .....gremlins gone! Thanks so much for the wonderfuI video. have been having an increasing amount of electrical issues in my wife's 2009 X3 and have not been able to locate the problem as different systems are affected and am getting multiple codes. I tried the visor/vanity and my brake lights come on as well as the brake warning light on the dash. Close the slider and the brakes go off and dash light goes off as well. The heated steering wheel light flickers when the visor/vanity is open and goes to a solid green when I close it. Also no horn or controls on steering wheel. Radio does not shut off when exiting the car and key out of ignition. Rear wiper not working. Transmission limp mode began a few days ago as well. Hope a new switch solves the issues.

Will it cause the message "trans fail safe mode"? I have the famous trifecta: BRAKE, ABS and DSC yellow triangle on. Im assuming it could be the ABS module but have also heard that a wheel speed sensor could cause those messages as well and now with this video it seems that it could be the ignition switch as well?

i have similar faults in my e39 such as steering wheel going up and down whilst driving, interior light flickering also sometimes my brake light is on until i turn the car on and off for a few times, cruise control not working sometimes and the airbag light is dark but while pressing the brake pedal it kinda lights up, could it be the same part failing? thanks in advance.

In my e39 the ignition key can be turned all the way around even 3 or 4 turns without anything happening at all, nothing turning on. Then when i take the key out and insert it again all seems normal again, except sometimes the turn signal is not working and sometimes the hazard lights come on all by itself and cant be turned off. Could this also be from a ignition switch ? What do you guys think

That is what my 2002 530i is doing which brought me to this vid, although everything lights up when the key is in the 1st position. Shop told me it was the starter which they replaced. 3 days later same deal so I though it might be time for a new battery. Replaced that and still get this intermittent fault. When I turn the key, everything comes on but it seems like there is no contact being made to fire up the starter. After 3-4 tries it will turn. Did you swap out your ignition switch and if so, did it remedy your problem? I start my car 5-6 times per day and I'm thinking something in the column has started to simply wear out.

Battery doesn't stay charged when engine is running, then car loses power slowly, then brake, dsg, 4x4, trans safe light came on. Then i turned off the engine and car cannot be started when i try to turn the engine on, No cranking. So, i called triple AAA and they started the car up with self jump charger. Then 2 days later, same thing happened again and car won't start again.its not alternator because alternator was replaced to new one 6 month ago. Is it bad IGNITION SWITCH or BAD BATTERY? 2004 x5 3.0i

good video pal I'm going to try this my airbag light is on my steering wheel controls don't work and my indicators don't click while engaged also the stereo won't come on if I unplug the battery and restart they all work fine for about 2 mins so fingers crossed this should fix it

Good video, I had similar issues. intermittent starting, wipers not working, airbag light on, brake light would come on when I opened the visor, cruise and steering wheel radio controls not working and the heated seats not working. The parts guy at the dealer told me to look for blackening on the contacts to the switch as the tarnishing can cause the switch to lose contact. 2005 X5 4.4. I hope this info helps someone else

I did my ccv and now car won't start I checked the fuse in hood and under air cabin and in glove box car was truning over but would start also my dash screen was unreadable for a long time then it would work and not sure if that had any thing to do with it

Smoove King Did you jump directly on the battery or on the terminals under the hood? If nothing happens please charge the battery and then try again, if you jumped directly on the battery check the fuses and other components that could have been burnt by doing that. Only jump start using the terminals under the hood

@@BMWorks_NL yes I used the hood terminals I did not check the glovebox well for fuses but the hood air cabin filter I pulled it out and it was fine . Would any blown fuses in glove or trunk percent a start also before I did the ccv the car battery would be dead the next day this car was not a daily driver not sure if the alarm was going off all nite or what but that was happening before I did the ccv not sure if that plays a role

my 2000 528i won't stary. won't even crank click nothing. I was considering a new ignition swith. but I never had those issues. it was fine one day then the next nothing. checked battery fuses. lights radio and everything works find. I'm about to spend a butt load of money to take it to a bmw dealer to fix. I sure wish I could figure this one out and maybe save some cash

Avion Thomas car was in shop for 3 weeks. Not a bmw dealer but the guy said he knew bmw s. He was convinced it was the key. Said his computer said the key was not communicating with car. The code in the key changes every time you start car to help prevent professional thieves I guess witch is why replacement keys cost so much. To get a programed key from bmw it was gonna cost 800 dollars with no guarantee it was gonna fix it. So I got car back and spent my money on a used suv till I can afford to take to dealership.
