i have a 1999 528i, question is, are both sensors the same? also are there only the 2 that you showed. thx
@HelpingHandAutoRepair4 ай бұрын
The sensors should be the same but the wiring lengths would be different so they in fact would be different part numbers. You have the two that are shown and then there will be two more after the catalytic converters on both banks.

Unfortunately rust can be a very difficult thing to deal with and every situation is different. I use PB blaster. Soak it for 15-20 mins or even over night. Hopefully they didn’t strip it trying to remove it.

is this o2 sensor affect the emissions? what is the right time to replace this sensor?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair2 жыл бұрын
Yes this sensor can affect emissions. O2 sensors aren’t usually considered general maintenance items. Therefore they don’t really have a certain replacement interval. If you have a check engine light on that is giving a code telling you the sensor is bad then replace it. If not, then just leave it alone until you do. This engine has 4 O2 sensors FYI.

Hey dude. I got 2 codes 202/203 and 227/228. First two means lambda regulating limit bank 1 and 2 -» are these before, or after? I suppose post, so after.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair3 жыл бұрын
Are these codes preceded by a “P0?” As in P0202 or P0203? If so those are referring to an injector circuit problem on cylinder 2 and 3 respectively. Also if they are P0227 and P0228, 227 and 228 are referring to APP sensor 3 which is an electronic pedal position sensor.
@A_n_u_l_u3 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair no P0. These are detected by INPA and no other code reader. All these 4 error codes are mentioning lambda.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair3 жыл бұрын
Lol, I am sorry. I was responding to another person and got your codes mixed up with their car. So I was on a 2013 Dodge Dart and not a BMW. You seem to have bad upstream O2 sensors. The 227 and 228 are a direct result of these faulty sensors trying to adjust the air fuel ratio. It would be wise to use a scanner that can read live data to see if in fact the O2 sensors are bad.
@A_n_u_l_u3 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair no worries! Can it be real as both pre cat sensors are both after cat sensor go wrong at the same time or after a short period? It started with 227/288 now I have 202/203. I’m not sure if these ever been replaced, so I assume still factory sensors are in.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair3 жыл бұрын
It’s not likely which is why I said if you can use a scanner or if you have a scanner that can read live data, you can read the data coming from the upstream o2 sensors and see if they are working correctly or not. It isn’t the down stream sensors.

is bank two driver side or passenger side
@HelpingHandAutoRepair5 жыл бұрын
Karl Joseph If you have this car with this straight 6 engine then bank two is the SET of exhaust manifolds closest to the inside of the car. If you look at the engine where the exhaust is coming out from the cylinder head. There are 6 pipes total. One set of 3 in the front closest to the front of the car has 1 O2 sensor sticking up. That is BANK 1. There is a second set of 3 pipes that are closer to the inside of the car near the back of the motor with another O2 sensor sticking up. That’s BANK 2. If you are looking for sensor 1 or sensor 2 ON either bank, then sensor 1 is located BEFORE the catalytic converters (ie upstream) and sensor 2 is located AFTER the catalytic converters (ie downstream)

It’s possible that they can be intermittent. Just keep an eye on the codes and replace the part if needed.

@HelpingHandAutoRepair2 жыл бұрын
@@tejasmane9175 what are you saying? They are in roughly the same locations on all these models with the 6 cylinder engines. If you have an E36, go and ask for and buy an E36 sensor. If you have an E39, go and buy an E39 sensor. If you have an E46, go and buy an E46 sensor. This way you know for sure you will have the correct sensor with the correct plug on it. Sometimes various year ranges can change the sensor connectors and if you try and use a sensor from a different year and/or chassis, it may or may not fit.

That price varies depending on where you live. Also depending on which o2 sensor it is. If it were this same one in this video, I would image somewhere in the $200-$300 range.

@@johndeltoro7990 if you have a scanner capable of reading live data, then you can read both down stream O2 sensors and see if they are slow or stuck at a certain voltage. If they are then you can try replacing them and hope for the best. Most cases, the cats are bad.
@johndeltoro79902 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair ok so that all being said how do you determine which cat is bad? From my research I believe I have like 4 cats…I truly appreciate your opinion and response…
@HelpingHandAutoRepair2 жыл бұрын
@@johndeltoro7990 Well P0420 only points to bank 1 which would Be the upstream catalyst near the head. However you can’t just buy one cat and usually have to buy the whole manifold that comes with both upstream cats. If the downstream O2 sensors are reading correctly, then you can be sure your cats are bad. What you want to see is when you hook up the scanner, take the car for a drive and hold steady around 55-60mph. The downstream sensors (labeled Bank 1 sensor 2 and bank 2 sensor 2) should be reading ~ 0.7-0.8 voltage. Approximately around those values. What you are looking for is for them to stay relatively steady around that voltage. If they are staying steady and then dropping down below 0.6 and then back up to 0.7 or 0.8 then you have marginal cats that are probably near the end of their service life. If the numbers are constantly dropping below 0.6 and staying there, then the cats are bad. If the numbers are stuck at a specific voltage or barely move from a specific voltage. Say the reading is 0.4 and it moves to 0.45 or so and stays there, the the downstream o2 sensors need to be replaced.
