The limp mode was due to a bad CPS (crank shaft position sensor). After the one take the issue never came back and no SES light but I was able to pull the code that was stored. I do have to agree with everyone that the e39 m5 does look better with the oem style 65 wheels.

From a BMW lover and a three-time E39 owner (530i, 525i, 530i), here are the facts: Pros: 1) They look amazing! IMHO, the best looking BMW's along with the E46. 2) They drive AMAZING! No other sedan combines comfort and sport like the E39 does. In the straight they keep on pulling and they are so planted. Around the corners they come alive! 3) Very comfortable, quiet, and you want to always hold the steering with two hands because the steering feels so good! 4) The engine, transmission, and axle are solid! Cons: 1) You will repair them! BMW owners will say "regular maintenance" which to a BMW owner means: thermostat, radiator, anti-freeze reservoir, accessory belt, rear-wheel ball bearings, DISA valve, spark plugs and coils, and pretty much ALL front end control/thrust/steering/stabilizing arms/rods! To other drivers "regular maintenance" means oil change and brakes! 2) They are very iffy to tires! You have to have perfectly round and balanced tires/wheels for the car not to shimmy! You cannot afford putting cheap tires on this car! And when the tires get old, you will feel it right away! 3) The car has a lot of quirks: power seat plastic cover WILL break, you will need to upgrade the CD player to MP3 and add the Aux input, you probably want the euro armrest, I vinyl wrapped the wood with carbon fiber, my trunk cable broke so I had to repair the wires...there is a lot of work here and there you can do yourself that's not essential but it makes the car looks so much better! 4) Be prepared to pay anywhere between $1,000-$3,000 a year for the first 2-3 years on a 525i/530i, and between $1,000-$7,000 a year for the first 2-3 years on the M5. It's a lot of money but it will still be cheaper than a brand new Maxima and drives 100 times better than any brand new car that's below $40,000! The good is that with the maintenance it's optional payment (you can ignore some little things, or you can decide to do it yourself and save money) unlike financing. The bad is that if the car gets totalled all the money you spent on maintenance is gone and forgotten! My advice is to buy the 530i, about 40hp more than the 525i for practically the same mpg. The I6 is also very reliable and smooth. These cars burn oil (all of them do!), so make sure to buy a one owner car with fairly low miles. If you are the 3rd owner you will know the owner(s) before you abused it...it's a BMW after all! Good luck and enjoy!

@auaq8 жыл бұрын
I would hazard a guess that limp mode was caused by one of the cam sensors temporarily failing during that WOT event. Knowing this particular M5 is the 2000 model and being at 127k mi I'm pretty sure it still has the original cam sensors (old style) that typically fail on these engines. During that WOT run one of the cam sensor(s) didn't function properly and so the DME (ecu) didn't get a signal return from that sensor. Thus, affecting the engine's performance and inducing a sudden loss of power. Check engine light will immediately turn on with codes such as random/multiple misfires, possible fuel cut off codes as well for specific cylinder(s), and more importantly it will also throw a code for the cam sensor too. Although I think the code will read something along the line of Vanos timing off or not. Can't remember exactly but it has nothing to do with the Vanos itself. A quick and easy way to fix this issue (if you were happen to be out of town) is to simply turn off the engine and then turn it back on, as it will kind of reset everything and in fact the CEL will actually go away. This has happened to me already, so I know it from experience. However, that doesn't mean the problem has been fixed cause it will happen again later on. Hence, replacing it with the newer style cam sensors (four of them) will definitely fix this problem. I hope the owner of this M5 will find this post helpful and take my advise of replacing them soon. In the video, they talk about the cooling system as being a maintenance item. I find that is incorrect or rather not really a major maintenance item at all. The S62 has a pretty robust cooling system and it's the non M5 E39s that really have to worry about their cooling system. Especially the I6 owners. They also talk about the Vanos but again most of the time it's just the solenoids or in fact the little circuit boards that cracks causing it to not function properly; however, the actual gears and the mechanism of the entire Vanos assembly do not typically fail.

Had a 99 528i that was bought 3rd owner with no aftermarket parts, With 195,000 miles for super cheap, bought with the intent of daily driving till dead with the expectation going in that I would need major repairs within six months. The car ran over a year without ANY maintenance (Including oil changes because I'm poor as hell,) done to it without issue, and the overall experience of driving made me finally understand why at the time they didn't just say "Ultimate driving machine." That car proved it every day to me. My wife hated the thing because to her it was a "tuna boat" and honestly with the weight, It was. But push the car just a bit beyond your comfort zone and you would see why it earned that title from BMW, It didn't just handle corners and turns, it ATTACKS them with a level of viciousness that I had never experienced. I admit I have very little experience with expensive cars (new or used,) but I cannot stress enough, If you are on a budget and want one of the best 4 door sedans ever made. FIND THIS CAR AND BUY IT!

My 02' used to do that random limp mode and I diagnosed it with one of the code readers to be the throttle position sensors. Swapped them and the problem never came back. Worth a look! If you get random limp modes in cruise control that's another sign the TPS sensors are toast. Seriously do yourself a favor and grab one of the specific OBD2 code readers. Worth every penny. The E39 is certainly the prettiest BMW ever made, and it's insanely robust - it's Munich's answer to the W124. The M54 straight six in the base models can be a bit troublesome in the head, but is otherwise a joy. The V8 isn't as refined or quite such a joy to rev out but is so reliable it's unbelievable. The interior is glorious, so much nicer than any BMW since.

I must also mention the seemingly obvious fact that the focus is ugly, and they will all be gone in 10 years for the most part. I paid 25k for my e46 m with 20k on it, 8 years later and is worth at least that much today with 50k miles. How will the ford age, like shit thats how.

I was a bit surprised to hear him say you need to look out for cooling system issues on the e39 M5. It is rather accepted on the forums that the cooling systems on the M5 were quite over designed compared to all the other 90s BMW cooling systems. Fuel pumps and sensors are the most common issues with these cars. Oh, and rear tires, lots of rear tires... I have put 37k miles on mine in a little over 2 years. Drive it year round including in the heavy winters we get here in Erie, PA. It is always fun to drive and still turns some heads.

why would you buy an M5 and drive it so slowly. I think that is why BMWs in general have engine problems in the US. People do not streatch the legs of their engines and just cruise at 50 mph on the interstate.

+Xan Millar Trust me, they don't. The E39 is a bit more loved because it looks better, and has proper muscle. People tend to love the S85 but not the cars it came with haha

+Kaisuke971 the e60 m5 is in my opinion a true supercar in a sedan/wagon. the e39 never gave me that feeling.
@Kaisuke9718 жыл бұрын
connoisseur de camembert I agree with you, but the E39 was more meant to be a muscle than a supercar. I love both animals, and both ideas of a super sedan btw. The muscle-like and the Supercar-like. Which on is sexier is just a matter of taste, i think i like them just as much :)

I always wanted one of these until I heard about how unreliable they are.
@simonkatz78675 жыл бұрын
S62 is not that bad. Timing chain guides are probably the biggest headache and the only inherently unreliable part. The rest is general maintenance, a performance engine like the s62 as much lower tolerances than a Honda 4 banger after all. Plus it's still less flawed than most of the m engines that followed it.

Lmao Typical BMW owner "the car is super reliable, never gives me problems." 5 min later check engine light is on and it's in limp mode. I can tell you from personal experience that these are anything but reliable. Ill never forget time when the right cylinder head started pumping oil down the front of the motor like a faucet. ended up costing $4000 to replace the VANOS that crapped out. Remember BMW stands for Bring Mechanic With. It did drive like a dream though, can't deny that.
