I did this recently and have a couple of recommendations: 1. Don't go too cheap on the boot - look for one with shiny black rubber; the (cheapest) matte grey ones don't bend properly and kink at the ICV elbow. 2. Invest in a flexible screwdriver shaft - the hose clips on the boot are often installed facing into the engine bay (thanks, BMW) and access is terrible. 3. If you use a 6 mm socket to do the hose clips, TAPE it to the screwdriver; I dropped one into the engine bay and it will likely never be seen again!

Thank your for your good video. It help me with the replacement of the lower and upper boots. At only 57,000 km (stored winters) on my 2001 325ci, which had the engine light on and it idled rough for a while after starting the car and there were fuel mixture codes. I am sure I was not getting very good mileage. I replaced the torn bottom boot, torn on the smaller flex duct. Yes, I disconnected the battery and faithfully followed the procedure outlined in this and other videos. Found the screw of the smaller clamp is pointing downwards and can only be accessed from the bottom. The larger clamp screw is pointing sideways and can only be accessed from the right. Oh joy, oh joy, access is very restricted for both. Someone at the factory thought installing these that way was funny. Does anyone have a trained spider monkey for those jobs? I was hoping with a long 6mm socket and a small ratchet wrench that I will have access to loosen the clamps, but I suspected it would not be that easy. It was not. In the end, I had to use a very small 6 mm combination wrench and a lot of little turns and a lot of patience to remove the two lower boot clamps. With the DISA valve removed, it was much easier to reinstall the clamps of the new lower boot by pointing the clamp head upwards and tightening them from above with 1/4" size ratchet wrench complete with a long extension and a universal joint. Also, to install the small tube of the lower boot, I first tightened the large clamp of the lower boot where it meets the engine and removed the plastic boot joiner on the upper opening. This allowed the boot to bend enough to get the smaller flex tube on which is not easy. Care and effort is needed to get the smaller flex tube in the correct orientation. That lower boot needs a better design for the smaller flex tube. I removed the water catching pan and the 90 degree shaped plastic shield next to the fuse box. That allowed the room needed to get at the lower boot clamps and for easier removal of the DISA valve which gave more room to work as well. I only reinstalled the DISA valve after the lower boot was installed and fully secure with both clamps. I put a latex glove over the hole of the lower boot so that nothing would fall in the opening while I worked. After the DISA valve was reinstalled, I reinstalled the big 90 plastic shield. The new upper boot was easier to install and turn to line it up with the MAF. Again, I turned the clamp heads upwards for install with the 1/4" size ratchet wrench complete with a long extension and a universal joint. Reinstall of the water catching pan was last. If you are need to replace the lower boot, replace the upper one as well as the new boots are more flexible to work with. Pulling out that little 90 degree vacuum hose out of the upper boot is impossible. The only way is to slice the boot extension tube (not the plastic 90 degree bend) requiring a new boot anyway. The embedded ring seal on the DISA valve looked OK and its seal felt OK so I reused it as is. But, I ordered a couple of O-rings for a later replacement. Of course BMW does not list an O-ring, another humorous day at the BMW design office so will need find one online. If the engine light is still on, digging out the seal with a little flat screw driver and installing an 0-ring will be a second job for the spring, It looks like a 1/8" dia. thickness O-ring is needed but I have read that a 3/16" dia. ring is needed for mine. I will see what shows up int he mail. Now to drive the car several times to to see if that engine light will go away. I started it and no more rough idle which solicited a smile.

I had same problem with the smaller ICV flex. Seemed like the last person who installed it had have some kind if bad sense of humour, or either installed it with the manifold removed. I'm thinking this was the way they were installed in the factory, with the manifold removed and then the lower boot installed. I can't see the BMW tech was so pissed off being assigned to the intake boots, that the only way to get some kind of payback was to push the metal clamps 180 degrees making it impossible to access the screw. What helped alot for me was to also remove the ICV (idle control valve) which are held in place with 2 x T40 torque screws and 10mm bolt. Access is much more improved and makes it easier to align the boot up to the throttle body. You can also clean out the ICV while its out as these tend to stick and cause all sorts of idle issues. The more and more I replace and fix things on these engines, the more I see how much the whole engine is held together by so much brittle plastic and deteriorated rubber. The PCV system is plastic wrapped around a hot aluminium block and crumbles when you so much as breathe on it.

A tip to anyone else attempting this...if your boots have never been replaced, the hose clamp on the ICV may be upside down (yep...). This is how they come from the factory. You'll have to do some funny screwdriver work, or just cut off the hose clamp. Good luck!

Hey guys, thanks for the videos, they are very helpful. I have a 2004 bmw 330i e46, with the m54 engine I think, manual ... I just noticed recently that sometimes it does not start on the first crank, sometimes even on the second, and also, when driving at random, the yellow brake light, eml light and the traction control light comes on, and once that happens car has absolutely no power, until you pull over, shut it off and start it again. I know I have a vacuum leak around the throttle body booth area, what do you think could cause it to keep basically stalling out like that?

The production engineer geniuses at BMW didn’t talk with the mechanics that have to fix these cars. Best thing is to cut the boot off down to the clamps and then you can get a small 6mm box end in there to loosen the clamps. On the larger of the clamps, I pointed it toward the front of the engine and tightened it with an extension. On the smaller one, point it about 45 degree forward or pick you own poison. The idea is to not be a BMW GNOME.

Good video. I am trying to clean the throttle body in my 2002 325i. The issue I’m having is, either from factory, or previous owner installed the clamps on intake boot closest to throttle body and the smaller boot next to it upside down. So the head of bolt is facing down instead of up. So I need to use a screwdriver or 1/4 socket from below vs from the top. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do that? I’m thinking I might need to cut air intake boots to clean the throttle body then replace intake boots with new ones and make sure I use clams right side up. Any ideas anyone??
@arnolduk123
@arnolduk123 4 жыл бұрын
just cut the rubber off so you can just pry the clamp around or twist the pipe off. You are using a new boot anyway so dont matter if you damage the old one, just dont damage the metal clamps.

There's a product called "liquid electric tape" that works well for rips and cracks. Not a permanent solution though. You can reinforce it with some gauze or a small piece of cloth, then cover the surface with it. Do a smoke test to make sure you've sealed it. Cheap gas station cigars work just the same as a 600.00 smoke machine.
