Nice job. Please explain the cog shaped part of brake assembly and adjustment. Thanks. Look forward to more e46 refreshes.
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY Жыл бұрын
Hey bogusie! Good to see ya. The cog is the drum brake or parking brake adjustment screw. As you turn the cog it spreads the pads further apart increasing its diameter and resting location against the inner drum of the rotor. I installed these pads with the adjustment screw backed almost all the way down being that there’s so much meat on brand new pads. As they wear down and you want more bite to the parking brake, you can adjust them with brake services 👍🏻 hope that helps

Great work as always man! Thanks for explaining everything so calm. This is so useful for those wanting to do it at home. Or have to, since there aren't good shops around. At least your dogs are big enough to not crawl in a car, like one of our cata did. She managed to get herself stuck on a control arm I think, was quite some work to get her out again (I had no tools back then). But she did learn; that car was sold, I bought my current E46 and she hasn't been near it lol.

Hey quick question, I'm having issues with my parking brake and was wondering if you know why after putting the hardware why the whole system moves when I Attempt to adjust it
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY Жыл бұрын
it will shift around a little bit with the drums removed, its only those little springs holding the shoes in place, once you put the rotor/drums back on it will keep all the pads and everything centered and where they should be

Love the channel man .. really enjoy watching your videos .. I miss my old e46 325 .. i did the expansion tank (twice ) transmission thermostat (twice too ) hmmm like 2 water pumps , thermostats , water hose (all ) serpentine belt , gaskets , coils , and since the car was from Ohio the Parking brake was rusted and done .. it was easy to delete everything and no more parking brake and since it was An automatic well I say it’s fine since there’s no hills where I live .. at the last time I have a problem with the brake booster .. I hear this noise but I never have the change to fix that and damage the abs .. I put the car for down payment and got now a F30 335i but the plan it’s to get a e46 and maybe a zHp ..😁

Great video as always. When you adjusted those drum brakes, how much clearance do you leave between the rotor? For gloves, I like the Mechanix textured nitrile or for re-usable I rock the Milwaukee nitrile dipped cut resistant ones.
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY Жыл бұрын
I’ll have to check those out! For the parking brake, I adjusted til I barely felt any resistance while spinning the rotor. To where I barely hear it bite while spinning. Hope that helps!

Do you ever have a concern for over torquing the axle nut when using an impact gun? Is there as much of an issue if an axle nut were to be over torqued?
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY 11 ай бұрын
ive never had an issue, as long as you start them by hand. I dont have a big enough 1/2 inch torque wrench that can handle it. Ive used an impact gun for the axle nuts for a long time and yeah, no issues so far. I also am very familiar with that gun, its not the strongest, but ive had it for over 10 years so i know its capabilites. I wouldnt if it was a brand new snap on impact or one i havent used before

As much as i enjoyed the video you missed some main points. First and foremost, torque specs! That's soooo important when working on cars. The axle nuts need to be tightened to over 200 lb/ft, not just a few hits with an impact gun. I also feel you downplayed getting the hub out and getting the axle back in. Both jobs are really struggles in a car that sees winter roads. Last thing I'll mention is there is a procedure for rear parking brake adjustment, you might get away with not following it but it shouldn't be ignored. Hope you take my comment positively, my intention is to help you improve your content!
