BMW E60 M5 Charcoal Canister Replacement

First; many thanks for sharing your knowledge, which was very useful when buying my E60 M5. (Same as yours; black, 2005 modell, Euro-spec). Picked up my car yesterday, and the seller had just gotten the 02-sensor ("sensor 1") changed at his local BMW dealer, after the "check engine" light came on. When test driving the car the engine light came back on, and we ran a diagosis which reads: "P2297" - "O2 Sensor Out of Range During Deceleration Bank 1 Sensor 1". The same code the dealer had gotten. Having watched your video on replacing the charcoal canister, I decided to open the fuel cap, and the car was gasping for air. Tried driving for 15 min min, and then opened the cap again. Almost same gasping, telling me that the charcoal filter must be blocked and that the canister needs replacing right away. Then deleted the code and drove home with the tank topped up and the cap almost open, to let air in. After 2 hours of driving, the engine light came back on, and even though the cap was open there was much vacuum when i took the cap off. So to my question: If you drive with a charcoal canister that obviously needs replacing, will this cause the engine light to come on? (My/our thoughts are that the cars very advanced engine controles will react if there is a substantial vacuum in the the tank?). Your thoughts/experience on this? Others? Thanks in advance. Thanks man, congrats on the new M5! O2 codes are normally caused by other issues rather than the sensor itself. Sounds like charcoal canister issue- the 02 sensor is expecting to see a richer condition once the purge valve is open, but it’s not because it’s likely the charcoal canister in blocked, so it’s throwing a code. Your charcoal canister definitely need replacing so I would start with that and go from there

Just Done mine, the only issue I had was the 1 single plastic clip in the wheel lining(head broke off) and the the connectors where pretty stiff to remove, I think I need to do some finger workouts to get there strength up 😁 did fuel filter also at the same time, both great vids 👍

Changing my totally blocked charcoal canister, the fuel tank was also inspected, and it was found that the tank had "imploded" in a few places. Nothing indicates that the pump or the gage is damaged. Also no signs of leakage. Cost of replacing the tank (pump included) is approx USD 4700. (BMW dealership and converted from Norwegian currency). So now I am wondering: Is there any chance that the tank can "mend it's self", now that the vacuum issue is sorted and keeping the tank topped up? And if not, should I bother changing the tank as long as it is not leaking and everything else seems to function? What do I risk? I want the car to be "perfect", but USD 4700 is a lot of money. What are your views here? Thanks!

Depends on how bad your tank is. Source a good used tank and get the dealer, or a BMW specialist garage to fit it with your existing pump (my local dealer will fit used/aftermarket parts but obviously no warranty and the labour rate is up there) That’s what I’d do but fit it myself 👍

I recently got a DMTL pump fault (code 002776). Does this mean I need to replace just the pump or the charcoal canister as well? It's a 2008, about 100K miles. I live in North America.

If it where me I’d change both out at the same time as they are accessed together, and if your charcoal canister is original it’ll be just about ready to be replaced anyway
