This video was timely. Every time I fill up my 545i with gas, it cranks over but will not start until you crank it about 10 seconds. I replaced this charcoal filter, along with the pump attached to it, and the purge solenoid in the front of the engine. Things are working great now.

SUBSCRIBED! Omg.. THANK YOU! Never knew what the heck that was! My BMW E30 coupe, 1985, has (had) a vapour canister too. I didn't knew exactly what it did tbh. I found it by mistake, while i was driving, that it was rubbing/bouncing on the tire, since the clips holding it broke off. It wore down so badly, that it made a really big hole in it. I didn't find ANYTHING about it anywhere, cuz i didn't knew what to look for either. It didn't smell like gasoline or anything (the lines to it were probably already clogged up long before i found it broken, cuz of its age). But now, i finally know the reason it was there, since i always had problems with fuel pressure dropping too low.

Glad you found you man i just got a e60 550i it was a 2 owner but neglected cause most people don't like messing with BMW'S here cause they believe they are too complicated I've had it almost 2 weeks now i did the plugs and oil this past weekend and changed the cabin filters and stuff but I've tried to reset the service codes for the oil and filters but she won't allow me to do so and she seems to have a cold start issue but only sometimes and misfire she also has slow coolant leak i haven't found it yet, but i was thinking i may need to change the ignition coils to but after watching this video I'm thinking that this could also be contributing to that as well this is the first time I've really messed around with the N side of BMW aside from an e90 i had back when i was a younger I'm more familiar with the M side ive had a few E36s i have one now she needs a transmission now but anyway if you could maybe lend an ear on what you think i could do and where i should start I'd appreciate it man

like i always say you are the only one that checks the things they teach in schools. things are more complicated than backyard mechanics think they are. if ya have the basics and apply them properly people will find the problem instead of jumping from part to part

That’s correct my friend many many on here are NOT clued up on these cars and most are just PARTS FITTERS AND DIYERS that’s it now you will see many many videos about this part and people jus trying to find a video to make and make out they found the problem with there cars when in reality they had to wait for someone like me on KZbin to even show them about this part. There is only me and one other guy on here that does stuff properly and I can say his channel ends in DIY

Correct indeed I know you will get fined big time over there for that and I wouldn't of had it unplugged either it was the idiot who owned the car before me that did that ! causing all my errors and rough running issues. Just shows people try and be cheap and disconnect things instead of spending money and its people like that that shouldn't be allowed near these cars and should be banned

Very good video could you make a video on replacing the purge solenoid I had a similar problem with the long crank but it wasn’t the charcoal housing, I was also getting o2 sensor codes when it wasn’t them, once the purge solenoid was replaced the crank fixed and the o2 sensor codes went away, I don’t know if it’s a common problem or not but I figured it might make for a good video

Hi from Western Australia, love your work. Question. Iam looking to buy a e60 M5 , has had SMG pump and, clutch and flywheel done. When cycling down the gears down to first then neutral , the red cog of death appears intermittently. Only on the odd occasions. The the car won’t start until, you cycle the gears through neutral and first the the fault clears. Then it’s all fine again. Could this be an electrical switch issue? Thanks for any help.

Hey man, would you please give me some help with something on my e90 key fob? It starts the car fine when inserted, the key blade is defo for that car as it turns and opens up the boot manually. HOWEVER . It doesnt seem to be charging as it wont do anything with the buttons and locking or unlocking. I got into the fob itself and the 3volt battery reads 3.17volts, so it cant be a duff battery surely? Another thing, the manual key blade doesnt work in the drivers door to lock it either! It just wont turn either way?

YOU are a godsend! I literally was outside taking look at my vapor canister, because I have been noticing fuel smell when I fill up my car and checked everything even had a look at fuel pump and filter under rear seat and it was ok and my last hope was this dam canister. Mine has a electric pump on it called dtml pump cause am in USA and emission here are so dam strict. My car is 07 E60 530i . So I come back in the house and turn the you tube on and here you u are just posted a video about dam canister.. lol.. before I replace it just a quick question.. could this canister cause a fuel smell ? I have no codes or other issues.

Yep it does indeed my friend fuel smell exactly filter is clogged !! 😃 common common issue that Bmw the 🛎 ends don’t tell you about as they know when it backs up with pressure it crushes your fuel tank then needing a new fuel tank which is more expensive means more money for them

My car keeps misfiring really bad on cylinder 5, I’ve changed the spark plug the ignition coil I’ve changed the valve cover gasket and even swapped the fuel injector out and it keeps coming back always cylinder 5? @@BMWDoctor thanks mate the E46 is late 54plate and the E90 June 07 (literally just before the N47 was introduced), so both M47 engine mate. I'll have a check at weekend on the E46 as no covers on back arches so should be visible E90 not with me currently, but will check when I get a chance

Dean, took your advise and had the battery cable connection recall done. Had starting problems with voltage drop afterwards as it would start with a jump pack np. THEN, 4 weeks later, it went on fire , AFTER BMW recall. They recovered it, I have a courtesy car, I luckily caught it quickly, as the boot mat, foam floor lining, and through floor connection burned . Warn everyone, recalled cars can STILL self ignite, PLEASE TELL EVERYONE AS THIS CAN STILL HAPPEN.

Bmw want more info from the dealer, so they now , I assume are looking underside photos to assess the damage to panels/ underseal and the condition of the underfloor battery cable. So far they havnt said what their intentions are,-- yet.

No paperwork as it was a recall . They did the rear light bulb boards as well. I have a few pics ill try to get to you tomorrow. Cheers Dean, just wondering where I stand legally now. Legally they owe you a new car BUT the burden of proof lays on you to PROVE it was BMW that caused this fire and NOT something else on the car that was due to neglect that is the issue now that you have to solely prove that you wasn't in the wrong and that the car had NO DEFECTS until they touched the car. Legally if you can prove that then BMW will owe you compensation and even a new car they will investigate it properly I should hope and let you know if a fire was caused by that or petrol fumes causing the fire or rain water

The most common reason for the evaporator canister to fail on any an all vehicles is owner over filling the tank and liquid fuel or gas contamination of the canister. By the way, an evaporator canister for a Ford F150 can cost over 200USD, 150-200USD for a Honda Civic. Don't claim BMW's are expensive in comparison to other makes. Every OEM part can be expensive.

Thanks for sharing........It is ridiculous, that that little box of plastic, metal and charcoal costs 180 pounds, which is more than 200USD. If it truly was a $200 part it, should never need changing, it should last the life of the car. It should be no more than $50.......This is why BMW gets a bad name. I should not complain because most of the auto manufacturers are not far behind or on the same page.
