While the vid was uploading i just had a quick search, in regard to shimming the diff....... I was confused there were no shims, turns out the circlips are the shims haha. We'll have to get it re-assembled and check backlash, with any luck i'll be able to get it close enough with the 4 clips we have. if not there may be a delay before getting it back together. Probably should have done some ree-search before attempting this... but you know. YOLO

I can only wish you all the diff luck in the world,the clips are the shims (they have numbers on them which relate to their thickness )and are sized to get correct contact with gears which must sit in centre line of diff,and be blued ,you must keep shims and gears shafts same ie left and right same when you rebuild,then everything perfect. Backlash is altogether different really, you’ve nothing to loose imo if you rebuild using same shafts and clips to same sides you might just be lucky. After doing loads research my ATB went faultlessly but I would still give your scenario a go as I have suggested you might just be lucky why not,don’t think you any chance if you’ve mixed up shims and shafts from left and right, praying you get diffluck not diffu*ked.

Mate - why not have a local shop fab a couple of brackets for the rear calipers. I know it’s more money, but lost time is money too.
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
It’s purely the cost. I’d expect a pair of brackets to be between $100 and $200 at least. Plus I want to see if the China sellers will actually fix their mistake. I’ve always got something to do, so not being able to drive this isn’t the end of the world. Apart from missing roll roll racing of course 😒

Oh yeah my MFactory diff for my 335i looked different to yours, it looked very similar shape to the standard one, you have to remove the bearing runners from the old diff and put them on the new MFactory diff, they say to put diff in freezer when installing back on but they just tap on the new diff easy enough, keep all the shims/c-clips the right way round as are different sizes! If u need any help mate as done this a few weeks ago! Also when u install it back in the car start the thread on the prop shaft to the diff otherwise it will never go back on when installing, I removed one of the exhausts to for some room!

Thanks for the info man. Yes, this is the 1.5 way clucthed Mfactory. Which is a bit rare, most of the Mfactorys are Hillical version. So you just used your original bearings and shims and all was well? I was concerned if anything on the mfactory is different to the original it will need re-shimming anyway. Did you check backlash?
@br4d101
@br4d101 4 жыл бұрын
@Zero To 60 yeh mine is the helical version, I pulled one of the bearing races off with a puller and the other off using a sharp screwdriver and hammer 🙈actually came off pretty easy, probably best if u use the right tool lol backlash was checked and had to be between 0.2 and 0.5, mine I think was around 0.3 so was fine, my car only had 60,000miles on it so bearings are fine, you’ll just have to check yours mate, good luck! You can buy shim kits but they’re a lot of money, the shim width should be written on the c clips

@Dejan if u have an MFactory diff you use torco manual transmission fluid what they recommend and life time warranty if u use that oil, the manuals take 1.2 litres, not sure about autos, u have to suck the fluid out the rear diff as no drain hole! If it’s standard diff just put in what bmw recommend think it’s Castrol sxf-xo probably change it every 60-80k miles gearbox oil is ‘lifetime’ oil but would change it if your gears start feeling lumpy and not smooth!

about the brakes, does anyone else feel like he’s only helping that chinese company to hijack the market for authentic brembo kits? After all if it weren’t for the R&D that Brembo put into building a quality product there wouldn’t be a knock-off product either. What’s everyone’s opinion on knock-off parts?
@chrisrobles2012
@chrisrobles2012 4 жыл бұрын
If you look back at the first video , he shows that they provided all “Brembo” parts such as the little rubber nipples over the bleed screws . They obviously have access to those parts . He mentioned he paid an extra $80 for upgrades . They probably sourced them from the maker to get them to be as authentic while using their own calipers and brake pads and brackets . By providing them with one model, only the rear brackets, I can’t see how that helps them so much .
@tuurbow
@tuurbow 4 жыл бұрын
No, this is like saying buying knock off chinese turbos is taking away money from Garret or Precision. At the end of the day, youre paying those big price tags on genuine parts for support and the warranty. You dont get that with ali-express.
@paulsimpson8990
@paulsimpson8990 4 жыл бұрын
Beware cheap imitations used to be the catch phrase used by the manufacturers but the Chinese have built an entire sub economy worth billions of dollars off this, they even copy boats out of New Zealand these days which have a habit of capsizing and killing people. My opinion is that they should never have made their way into Australia in the first place, customs should have destroyed them. If they came in as dic...a.s then fair play but they should also have been supplied with relevant compliance certificates as people’s lives are at risk. A Chinese turbo or inter cooler is not safety critical equipment like a braking system. In 10 years and another three owners time they will fail on some unsuspecting owner which is why they’re a bad idea and essentially illegal in this country.

@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
snivesz32 - i totally get where you're coming from and its a crappy area in the automotive parts world. I am just trying to get the cheap chinese brakes, that i paid for fitted to my car. Regarding knock off parts. Every single item that doesnt come from BMW is a knock off of some form. I don't like that the chinese guys put the Brembo logos on these at all, i wish they didnt. But the fact they look like a brembo calliper is no different to using an aftermarket oil filter. The aftermarket filter is made to look like and work like the genuine one and sold for less money than the genuine one. Brembo cops it hard with fakes, but so does every automative manufacturer out there. Its just when someone copies a Ford headlight or bonnet for example, it doesnt seem to upset so many people.

Morning guys. Crikey, bet you wish you’d done the research before splitting the case. On the proviso that the replacement diff is the same dimensionally, bearings and circlips should stay with their respective casings and importantly sides of case. Given that the Mfactory diff was on taper bearings I have doubts about fitment. You need to ensure that each diff is dimensionally same, not close. Put the left side together first to ensure correct mesh of gears. Admire the stuff you done fairly blind on this (car) but as you are learning knowledge is everything. There is plenty of info stuff available . D.

In hindsight, i wish i looked in to this before cracking on with it. But always short of time, it was start working and get filming or put it off while i look in to it. As an bit of info I finally went Quaife on my 135i, so been through much of this. If you find the diffs are same dimensions, transfer bearings across to Mfatory diff makings sure they remain on original side. A puller is tricky to get the small inner bearing collar of the diff itself . There is an area on the casing where an edge is exposed and this can be used with piece of soft mild steel to drift the collar off the diff. keep everything matched side for side. Your mixing of the circlips may not be an issue if you kept each with their respective casings, just move from one side to the other until you see minimal backlash. I also have a 335 which sits untouched. See you guys down under once Restrictions lift.

I’m not familiar with these diffs but on the Dana ford units the pinion engagement and preload is critical to getting the teeth to mesh correctly. The pinion and ring wear together so it seems like you’re inviting issues by not keeping them as a pair. The fords are very sensitive to pinion preload which is set via a one use crush washer. When they lose preload the wear and whine like a stuck pig...I went through three in 36k on my last xr6t. Ring and pinions are sold as a pair for these reasons.

My 10/2006 build automatic has the large housing and the same ball style bearings your original diff had. Are you sure there are not shims between the center and the bearing inner race? Did you measure backlash before you removed your center? There must be shims in there somewhere to set the bearing preload and adjust the backlash. I reused my original bearings and came up with the same backlash after I installed my Wavetrac LSD. I don't explicitly remember shims (it was 7 years ago), but I don't see how any adjustment of the gears would be possible without them. [EDIT] This may be helpful: www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29755 It looks like there are shims between the center and the inner race and the c-clips come in different thicknesses. I am not sure if you will be able to get your backlash and preload correct without removing and reusing your existing bearings (ball type), shims and c-clips.
