My BMW got DESTROYED by this! BMW X3 2013, 130,000km, I bought new. my car lost power on road, towed to the bmw dealer, after spend $800 inspection, it was timing chain issue and plastic guide broke to pieces, the engine got destroyed. The dealer quote me $21000CAD+tax to replace new engine. However after submit all service record (third party shop), BMW agree to pay half of the cost. I am still shocked since the car is less 6 years old with moderate mileage. So I did some research, and found that I am not the only case. Seems like BMW knows this issue well, but refuse to recall or take responsibility. Some people have the group lawsuit against BMW, just search BWM N20 engine class action. So if you have this engine and more than 100,000km, take this issue seriously, or it will cost you a leg!

My 2013 328i xdrive has 135k miles on it. It has only received routine scheduled service throughout its life and zero maintenance. I drive the heck out of it. Sport +/eco in the city; eco on the highway with RPMS Under 2k on a 20 minute commute. And I monitor boost pressure and keep it around 12 PSI. But it runs strong and like new... The engine is rated at 300k kilometers so I’m guessing once I approach 176,000 miles it is time for a 360 degree service; water pump, timing chain, etc. but my plan is to drive it until the computer tells me something breaks..... living on the edge ;)

I did my 2013 N26 at 105k miles as I was scared as I drive it hard. Glad I did as 3 of the 4 tabs on the plastic were broken. No noise or other strange symptom. I always turned of A.S.S and changed my oil at every 5k miles. Took me 23 hours.

After blowing my engine and having gone through this whole fiasco with BMW NA I don’t think there will be end to this problem, especially as inventory of n20/n26’s hit the used market. However, as we learned with Porsche and IMS Failures the industry has never held manufacturers fully accountable! Hopefully we see this issue brought to light in the courts

Thic F30 you hit the nail on the head though! Lot of good info floating around. It’s a shame, I believe the demographic of people that buy these cars in the $10k-15k range are going to be the same ones that neglect frequent oil changes and engine monitoring, subsequently they’ll be the same group who experience a higher probability of engine loss. See this a lot with e60 M5’s at the Used Car Dealers in Urban Markets. Guys buy them for 12-15k trying to flex and don’t realize they’re gonna have a $7K SMG pump repair a few months later!

@@ottomobili2575 Not really. The real reason they break, is because they are designed to break Junk, absolute junk BMW is garbage. All mechanics used to think it was shit in the early 2000's, but now with the 2015+ its even bigger shit. It's such a big shit, that i don't even want to fix them anymore. All plastic, every hose is plastic. The coolant hoses have been breaking since early 2000's at the connection points where it is plastic. Let me ask you people... Do you think BMW is unaware of this issue? I had a 2017 330I come in today, and there was a coolant hose on the coolant reservoir, that broke off at the plastic junction and that hose led somewhere to the back of the engine, where it also broke off somehow. No way to see where the hose leads but it does lead underneath the intake manifold. To take the intake manifold off, it's a 5 hour job. on a car that has less than 100,000KM and is 2 to 3 years old. Yes, BMW is aware of their plastic garbage pipes, that always break, and yet they haven't done a thing to address it. In fact, they added more plastic pipes, and put the TIMING CHAIN in the back of the engine now on the new 2.0 and 3.0 engines since 2017, so now that even if you want to do it at home, you will need an ENGINE HOISE to take out your FUCKING ENGINE first. These companies are polluting the environment, creating garbage that will need to be fixed, with more garbage plastic parts. The governments are taxing the people, but what are these garbage companies liable for? They are the ones, choosing profit over environment, as they VERY WELL KNOW that if they made their GARBAGE parts out of rubber and aluminum, they would never leak, and wouldn't require to be fixed. Not to mention, that everything is always complex and for what reason? How much more MPG are you getting out of your BMW to justify the cost? It's not that the cars have 1 or 2 problems, they will have EVERY SINGLE problem that can happen, in ownership within 300,000km. Soon, they will make the pistons and engine block out of plastic too. These big companies need to be paying BIG taxes for their consistent garbage that forces people to repair things that shouldn't be breaking. How can they make a timing chain not last? BMW and Mercedes, and even Audi. They have been making chain engines since the inception of the engine, and somehow they can't get a timing chain to last? Why don't they make timing belts then? Timing belts don't require as much labour, and parts as a timing chain, that's why. Again, draining you dry. FUCK these globalist cock suckers

Great video! I have a 2012 328i with full bolts ons, custom tune, and methanol injection. We are currently at 21psi and still going. I have 87,000 miles on the car now. I check the timing chain often, and she’s still going strong! I’ve done a good bit of research on the topic. Apparently only a subset of cars experience the issue. Disabling auto start stop and doing oil changes every 5k miles (or less) is suppose to help significantly. I’m still considering trying to diy it. I’ll make sure to do a video on the diy and upload it to my channel if I end up doing it!

Yes, upgrading the tensioner to the newer version ( p/n 11318685091 - relocated oil port and much stiffer spring...) and disabling the auto stop/start feature (causes oil starvation...) will greatly enhance the life of your timing chain and N20/N26 motor.

xHamfistedx so replacing that part alone will extend the life of the timing chain. I have a 2012 328i with 112K miles. No timing chain issues at all. But trying to be preventive. I got it as a CPO in 2015. I wonder if they replaced the timing chain during the CPO. Maybe not it only had 23,000 miles when I got it. Any info is appreciated, thank you.

My car F30 is an early UK registered 2012 328i n20. In August 2018 I had a loud whine from the engine suspected this to be the fault, the dealership diagnosed and confirmed the failure. Unfortunately as far as I’ve found, there is no recall in the UK for this issue, My car was outside of the manufactures warranty but by speaking to the dealership and BMW group I managed to get BMW to cover the cost of the parts as a “goodwill” gesture and I payed a reduced fee for the labour. This may be because the issue was found before the engine failed, I’m not sure how cooperative they would have been if my engine was ruined.

Just dropped my car off at the dealership this evening. It's a 3/13 production date f30/n20, still under warranty (but not for much longer). I reached out to my dealership advisor after watching this video and listening to my engine more closely at idle. I have a definite whine that I can hear when I rev the engine that wasn't there prior. I'm just under 63k. Hopefully they just take care it without giving me an issue. I guess we'll see. Wish me luck. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again for the videos John! Keep up the good work!

Just picked my F30 up from the dealership. All good, 3 pages of parts on the invoice that were changed, fresh oil change. I should be good to go. The whine is gone. My advise to anyone that is still covered under the extended warranty is to take it in to you local dealership just in case. The service guys are great to deal with and if you ask they will do their best to help you out. I'm happy to have the piece of mind. The price they quoted to do it the work out of warranty is definitely worth your time to get it checked out. :cheers

My 2012 328i with n20 engine has 117,000 miles on it. My oil timing chain guide exploded first. The car lost oil pressure instantly and sounded like a tractor. It’s in the shop now getting new timing chains with the new guide rails for the main timing chain and oil chain. It’s so stupid that bmw uses these plastic components inside the engine. My plastic valve cover went first. Now the guide rails fail, fml. Planned obsolescence is a terrible thing. Bmw purposely designs shorter lifespans into the newer engines with cheap plastic components so you have to spend more on service. My e36 from 1996 had 250,000 miles on it and I never had a problem like this. Only basic maintenance and had to replace the cooling system, which was common with those models after 150k miles. This was also due to plastic components failing. But now these timing chains are only rated for 90,000 miles. Right before the warranty runs out.

Got a 2013 328i xdrive, I knew about this problem before I bought my car 2 years ago but didn't know how often it was actually occurring out there. I've made sure to never use the auto start stop, and I change the oil every 8000KM instead of the ridiculously long intervals the car suggests. Almost at 120000KM now and no strange noises yet. I have thought once in a while that I could possibly be left stranded somewhere without having had any warning signs of failure.
