According to the BMW Motorrad part supplier, the brown seal is for oil and the black seal is for water.

My '05 Dakar water pump died about 80km from home. It was a warm day, about 27C, and my wife was on the back. The temperature light came on, but I rode home anyway!!! Well, the radiator/thermostat was gone after that, but the old Rotax was fine! ha! I replaced the radiator/thermostat, plus did the work you did here. It was quite a learning experience for me. There has never been any coolant in the oil, and Lizzy is running strong as ever. I've had her 7 years now for mostly road riding (about 70,000km), though I hit the fire roads in the mountains whenever I can. I ride her to work about 1 hour every day (round trip). I had to replace the dash because it was haunted. I've replaced the rear shock because we go camping on her or on weekend trips, which is just too much for the stock shock. I also droped Ricor valves in the front, and the fork dive on braking was reduced a LOT. Plus the road feel is much more sensitive and confidence-inspiring. Of course I did something about that torturous seat. Seat Concepts was a good choice. Your video is in my bookmarks, and when I do this again, I'll do it your way. I like your oil return line solution. In my case, I just went out and bought some suitable hose that would slip over the solid line. I cut solid line in two places and used a couple small hose clamps. That worked like a charm and was cheap. Problem solved. I remember having a hard time fitting that engine cover back in place. My cousin had a place in Baja. He told me not to retire there. Stay safe. Ride safe. Cheers from Korea, Eric

Nice Eric, i also use my bike everyday, and still running with no problems on the engine at all, after 20 years, its really incredible ! The Seat Concepts im sure its a nice upgrade ! I dont know or where your cousin is in Baja, but many i mena, many people from US and Canda come over to retire .... Baja California Sur it so beautifull and safe ! Thanks for your msg and to sub to my channel ! Ride safe and have fun !!! Im sure you may have some greats places to ride off road over there !! Saludos Eric !

@@ridingluna I watched your review video with your modifications. I'm interested in replacing sensors now! (You mentioned that there was a performance boost.) I'm also curious about those fork gaitors on your front end. I have shields, but I'd like to wrap the stantions as well. I used Seal Savers, but I took them off. They were only covering part of the stantions. My cousin had a house on the Pacific coast of Baja California where he raised Chocolate Labradors in a kennel. He lost everything... property, equipment/furniture, a vehicle. I'm not sure how, but he mentioned gangsters. He would drive from the Los Angeles area all the time and do his business. A local man looked after the dogs, but he was far north of BCS. I'll definitely check out BCS because it will be time for me to retire in the next few years. Cost of living and safety are prime factors. The place looks fantastic; that's for sure! Are you using 10W oil with emulators??? My Ricors spec 5W. Maybe I'll replace with 10W? I dunno. I'm still running stock springs.

One more thing: one of your mods was a temperature monitor. I know my bike HATES summer here. It's quite hot and humid in Daegu. Have you ever considered an oil cooler?

About the sensors, in my case, the bike did improve. Specialy after changing the TPS throttle position sensor. Yes, the north of Baja in very different then BCS. Over here its very safe. By factory, also they advice to use 5W oil wirh the emulators. In my case, i try with 10W and i like it better how they feel.

Hello, I'm from Mongolia, I really enjoyed watching your video. I have a 2002 motorcycle and I need these exact parts. Hi Puujee, sure, let me know how can i help you. Where i live, they dont sell the parts. You can order the parts online, and they will send it to you. Its your water pump leaking ? Unless the propeller its broken or the small gears are worn out / broken tooth so it wont make the water circulate, the bike shoudnt heat up.

@ridingluna Жыл бұрын
Thank you ! The bike comes with a Engine Temp Sensor, works along the ecu and will tell when to turn on the radiator fan. As this is an old school 20 years old bike, there is no way for us, riders, know witch is the “‘present” temp of the bike. So i got the one you mention. That comes with a small digital screen that will show us the “present” temp of the water cooling. Made by Trial Tech. May I ask how you feel about the bike in general? I have a 2005 Dakar and I am wondering if you would possibly prefer an air cooled bike for the type of travel that you do, or do you feel this bike is simple and reliable enough. Thank you Sir I'm enjoying the videos and your very good explanations and clear detailed images.

Thank you ! Im in the editing process of editing a personal thought video about this bike in 2023. For the kind of use the i give to my bike, riding hard off road in Baja, where you have a very high temp in summer, i belive a water cooler bike its the way to go. Keeping in mind that this bike its in the “ hot “ side engine temp. I use the bike as an enduro bike, with the limitation of the weight this bike has ….. And i load the bike with 55 kg aprox of load, and she is still able to ride hard off road with no problem. Lots of torque, and relaiable bike. Mantein it well and know its weakness. And you will have a great bike to have fun and travel.

@@ridingluna I will take your word for it that is good to know thanks. I guess Im not crazy about removing cams to replace valve shims when the time comes. So much to remove for access, but that is true for most bikes these days except maybe Suzuki DR650 and not many others. Can be done at our convenience though. Found considerable amount of oil in the bottom of the airbox I suspect the previous owner was overfilling with oil. I mention it so that you don't accidentally end up with a clogged filter if you drop the bike over. Happy trails!
@ridingluna
@ridingluna Жыл бұрын
@@guy7670 Thank you for your tip ! You are correct, this bike dont like to be overfilled with oil, and it will let you know the way you mention. Thats way the correct way to mesure the oil level is when the bike reach the normal riding temp or after riding for 10 min, the dip the stick without screwing it and with a midium level your bike will be ok. I havent done valve adjustment yet, so far so good, i have done 60.000km with it. Have fun and ride safe ! Thanks !

The seals are different colors but same dimensions, why is that, does black need to go to oil and why?
@ridingluna
@ridingluna 5 ай бұрын
Hi Serp, yes, both seal are the size. Depending where you are getting them from they may have different colors or both the same. In the past, when i order the WP Kit from BMW, both seal were black. Was is important to know, is that the temp of oil and water are different. So you meed a seal that can stand the diff temp of each element. One for the temp of the water and another for the oil.

Hi, so far so good. No burn or burn mark. You can use some heat protection fabric thats is special made to cover the exhaust, just in case. But no, no burn and the hose is not touching the exhaust. Make sure its a good high pressure hose.

I've used a steel-mesh hose-cover over the entire hose (there is 1-2mm space between the hose and hose-cover) and fixed it with cable ties so it doesn't touch the exhaust. Too bad if you reuse the original banjo bolt that the hose can't be routed through the back of the engine but really has to go through the front close to the exhaust. The bajo bolt can't be pointed backwards. It might be possible but it would mean to grind the engine bottom (which I wasn't a fan of) or use a custom banjo bolt (too much hassle). And yeah use high quality fuel-oil hose for high temps+pressure, bit pricey but you might regret it if you won't. Some cheapo simple hydraulic hose is imho not enough as hot engine oil is aggressive (the engine is polluting the oil making it even more aggressive). So beware - spent at least 30$ for 0,5m length, not like 5$.

That hardline and its placing was that one thing that made me wanna kill myself and haunt the „geniuses“ at BMW forever! I ended up cutting it and will definitely install the hydraulic hose mod as shown in your video. Question: What kind of hose did you use? Is there any specs to pay attention to (except the matching inner diameter obviously)? What temperature rating makes sense?
@ridingluna

@@ridingluna cool thanks… BMW is notoriously known to complicate designs only to force customers to do even trivial maintenance at an official dealership. Man how I long for easier times with my Kawasaki KLR 😅 I already found a shop that is producing 60bar and 175 °C rated oil circulation hoses with just about the matching inner diameter (12mm - 1/2 inch). The mod is definitely worth the effort, even if only making roadside clutch plate inspection/replacement easier. Thanks a lot!
