The tensioner has a spring and a small ball check valve - if yours was full of oil and the check valve was holding good, then you cannot compress it - the check valve allows the tensioner to extend as the chain wears but prevents it from retracting - like the mechanical ratchet type tensioner.

But they have to be compressed to be fitted?

@@MALVSMACHINE Correct. If you removed one of those that was holding its oil charge then using something like a small Allen Key to depress the ball and release the oil before re-installing. Many of these check valves start leaking by and that causes a rattling start until the oil pressure has built up in the tensioner again.
@@sunyoungg5634 ah ok, I wasn’t aware of that and it’s really good to know. Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it 👌🏻.

Wow that was a short one, looking forward to seeing what goes on with the fuel tank and what comes after that.

Yep, just the way I like them 😄. The fuel tank has definitely seen better days 😆

Replaced the one spring on mine … cheap and effective was to silence the tick!

Absolutely, they definitely do the trick and are a lot cheaper!

When replacing the tensioner on the right side, is it necessary to relieve the chain by turning the crankshaft? Can it be done in any position? I'm going to replace the right tensioner on a 2007 R1200 (air) on the right cylinder, but I don't want to take the drop frame apart, remove the spark plugs and set the engine into position unless it's really necessary...? Thanks for the verified advice.

From memory, on the 1150 it can be done in any position as the chain is a complete unit, as long as nothing is turned when the tensioner is removed. I would recommend consulting the manual just in case there is some prep needed, and for the correct torque spec 👍🏻

hello what spring would you change it with

Hello! I was going to replace it with a direct replacement camshaft tensioner spring which was BMW part number: 11311341015. But was lucky that someone had replaced it with the upgraded piston, BMW Part number: 11317656922. I Hope that helps?
