I know it's been almost 6 years, but I have the same rattling on my 1150 and it's been driving me crazy. Seeing your enthusiasm after getting the bike out again after doing the mod sold me--thanks!

Just to answer the question. Do to the right side being upside down. Fluid does not leak out do to gravity like left side does. This is the main reason you can get away with only one replacement. The new one has a hydraulic valve which keep unit charged for months at a time when not ridden. Old one leaks out minutes after sitting. If you still have noise. More than likely it is one or more of the valve push rods broken on the end. There are newer updated solid ones that will fit and not break like factory. The fellow referenced in this video "Cris". Has a Great Video about this issue too. Good Luck. And good to see well done videos for the "Do it yourselfers".

you are right , based on this article I changed the left cam chain extensioner. Cost about 50 euro but an enormeous improvement. You don;t need to do the right side, slightly different construction.

The left hand camchain tensioner were an issue because the oil drained out of them when stood particularly when on the side stand. The noise on start up disappears once the oil pressure once again builds up in the tensioner. The right hand one does not suffer from the same problem. A mod that is well worth doing.

It also can cause a rattle and pinging at 4-5000 rpm's. Also cause failure of the chain guide which can result in catastrophic engine failure.

I had similar symptoms as you, my colleague, I did exactly the same and I got the same effect, thank you for the film, because it was the inspiration to act, thank you again and best regards 👍😎

How about part #11 on the diagram? I don't yet know much about these bikes but that also looks like a tensioner. No need to replace that?

Great video. Thank you Armand5000. Does anyone know if the new hydraulic piston (#15) can be used with the old cylinder (#10)? Are the old one housing the spring cylinder and the new one housing the hydraylic piston the same dimensions? They look the same at about 04:00 of the video, but are they indeed the same?

I replaced that on my old 98´ R850RT, my engine didn´t have that clattering sound, but I thought it was wise to do it anyway.

When replacing the tensioner on the right side, is it necessary to relieve the chain by turning the crankshaft? Can it be done in any position? I'm going to replace the right tensioner on a 2007 R1200 (air) on the right cylinder, but I'd hate to take the drop frame apart, remove the spark plugs, and crank the engine into position unless it's really necessary...? Thanks for the verified advice.

Doing this asap!! I was wondering what that noise was!!

Great video. I see you used OEM parts and not the ones from the BeamerBoneYard. Has anyone tried the tensioner from BeamerBoneYard? I'm thinking it would be safer to pay more and go OEM. I need to do this on my R1100R with 130,000 miles. Hopefully the cam chain guide is not already damaged.

How many miles did your bike cover prior to this maintenance?

Once the oil has filled the tensioner it is NOT compressible - the small ball check valve prevents the oil being displaced and of course the oil isn't compressible so the tensioner is solid at that point.

What about the other side ,do they not need to be upgraded ?
@asturiancetorix25524 жыл бұрын
The left side tensioner is upside down, so it lost it´s oil and it´s weaker until the engine runs and pump oil in it again. The right side it´s facing upwards, and it doesn´t lost it´s oil, and can put enough tension on the guide rail so the chain won´t slap it and broke it over time.

why are you only changing the left tensioner? Whats up with the one on the right?
@TheSmartbear12 ай бұрын
The r/h tensioner is inverted, because of this the oil doesn’t run out and cause the issue.

Lol only warning from me, as a Bmw technician, when i work on the old models like lets say this one, always remove the injector before moving the throttle body, why? because that nice shiny looking pipe that goes to it becomes very hard and brittle from age and they snap with out warning. so use it, dont use it.
