Great to have you finally testing BMW's i4 eDrive 40! I have one myself, also without the M package (which increases drag) and on 18" wheels as the one you used here. Now almost 4 months and 10,000+ km on it - but not in such harsh conditions as the ones of your test, as I live in Portugal - and my average consumption is about 18 kWh/100km, with roughly 50% on motorways (cruise control set to 122 km/h), about 35% other roads and the remaining on more or less urban (but not many traffic jams) environments. And I do love the car, its driving, its silence and, I confirm, the smoothness and effectiveness of its adaptive driving assistance system. And, by the way, the laser lights are absolutely superb and clearly deserve the investment! Looking forward to watching other tests you will be submitting this car to! About time! The eDrive 40 is the better of the 2 i4’s sold in Norway, the M50 is too much. It’s a pity we won’t get the xDrive 40 in Norway, that would be the pick of the i4’s IMO. I hope you get the iX next.

@@rayimcilek1766 what put me off the M50 was the throttle response, its jerky, my wife said it made her feel sick, the e40 was much nicer to drive. Tesla’s build quality is still awful, Tesla’s are still appliances, I don’t see any feel good factor in Tesla ownership.

I have the M50 and it’s not too much unless price is a concern. At 270 miles (actual range), you have enough for daily commute. Efficiency is better in the edrive 40 due to lower weight and 18inch tires but I’d rather have M50’s extra power at my disposal. So much fun ❤

Yes, it's a great car!! I can get even longer with my 17 inch wheels and by using the B and D gears in the right moments (D is often better than B on those faster roads where you don't need to slow down and instead can use the "free glide" down hills). I even have a roof rack mounted and it does not take away that much of the distance. However, the distance will shrink a lot if you want it really cosy and warm inside when it's winter outside. If I go from 20 to 23 degrees in the car, I will loose a lot of mileage. So...for long rides, turn down the heat just a little and the car will just continue to run :).

It's annoying that it hides the avg. consumption when you come to a stop. I'm in much warmer San Diego California. My average with i4 eDrive40 w/18" aero wheels so far for December is 4.8 miles/kWh or around 13 kWh/100 km. So that's a big difference.

It actually doesn’t you just have to look at the diver info screen. It will show the kWh/100km from start, from last recharge…..

@@MasterChief37 it shows real-time power draw and average on the same bar when you're in motion. When you stop the car at a stop sign and a signal or even at the end of your trip, it removes the average value from that meter. Try it. It's annoying.

@@karlInSanDiego you’re looking at the wrong display. You have the following options. since start of journey, since last charge, since factory, and the one you want since individual, these are the values since the last manual reset, you can reset this at any time. You can find this in the manual under configuring the trip data display.

@@MasterChief37 in each of those modes, it stops showing the average, when you stop the car. Not sure why you're arguing with me. Go try it yourself.

@@karlInSanDiego I’m arguing with you because I own an iX with idrive 8.0 and you’re wrong. Look up trip data in the user manual then go for a drive.

i have a corsa e. i drive it to work every day and back, that’s 120 miles everyday. i have had it for just over a year and it does the job and pretty well. it has 105,000 km on it and it’s still running beautifully. i would never think about buying an electric car out of a corsa e price range as there’s no need to.

While on the topic off correcting you when you get trivial things wrong: Was not the i4 built on a platform that was designed for enabling fossils, hybrid-fossils and electric cars to be build on it? If so, I would claim that it is not completely correct to state that it is build on an ICE-platform. You might as well turn it around, and say that the ICA cars build on the same platform are a compromise because they are build on an EV-platform. Nitpicking, I know. I am also aware that almost every reviewer say the same. I might also be completely wrong in remembering that the platform was designed to allow different drive trains to begin with 😊 Great video as always, by the way! I have owned and riven multiple electric cars, and I can honestly say that my current BMW i4 M50 is by far the best in its price range, as long as you do not have not a big family. The only problem with it is that I cannot find a good reason to replace it with something else, and I love getting a new car at least once a year or so.

By the way the most efficient wheels are 17 inch aero wheels (852), however nobody order it with that "small" wheels.

@@furry_homunculus They do. Just switch the rims in the configurator and you can see the range change. The problem is that WLTP contains only 33% highway consumption. Because the wheel size matters only in high speed you can multiple the lost range by around between 2 and 3.
