I know the price is high at 130 grand but this is one of the best cars I've driven in years! The charging infrastructure still isn't great but there's nothing wrong with the car so let's find out about both of them together.

Great to have Bob back and talking comment sense. Once again the government are asleep at the wheel. EV charging infrastructure needs to be seen a criticial piece of national infrastructure and not something that can simply can't be left to the private sector. We are on the verge of affordable normal EVs that people will want / be able to buy arriving and in Ireland with we don’t even have a plan to talk about what sort of infrastructure we need!

I'm with you, Bob. It has been enough years that there should be a roof, etc. at charge stations. I know the chemistry is slowly improving but until we have higher rates it's a harder sell since humans don't like change. Here in the US almost all the plugs are on highway routes and almost none where people actually live and work. Glad to see you're getting out which is a big part of healing.

Great to see you back again Bob! Newbridge might have one of the first hubs with a roof 😮Keep an eye on the Maxol station near the Kaedeen. Under construction as we speak with multiple units. Charging speed easily explained… (a) Your drive from Portlaoise to J14 wasn’t far enough to heat the battery enough in that weather. Would likely take 30mins or more based on my Ioniq5 experience. Battery would need to be 20 degrees Celsius or so. (b) it speeds up during the charge as the power going into the battery also heats it up meaning it gets closer to optimal temperature and closer to the stated kw output.

No frunk, no good. I hate having a a charging cable in the back of the boot. It takes way too much space, underneath the false floor is no good because more often than not there will be other things in the boot. Just give me a space where the charge cables and accessories, out of the way of me, the passengers and our gear. I can't understand why it's so difficult to find that space other places than the boot. Which is a shame, because the rest looks brilliant

Glad to see you back Bob! As for the charging speeds, I suspect it might be due to weather (ie if it's cold outside the BMS lowers the charge voltage to protect the battery since it's not good to charge a cold battery). So I suspect that the 64W to 72W or whatever it was, the charging rate, may be due to the battery temperature. :)

Not all chargers are made equally. Now that I have Tesla this is my fifth electric Car over the years. There is simply no comparison. Battery heated to temperature for arrival charging station . In the newer V3 chargers no shared power. I'm glad you brought up these poor charge rates. Depending where you are on the curve the vehicle will charge slower.

Great to see you reviewing cars again Bob. I have to agree on your views that EVs aren't the sole answer. I'm considering a hybrid next from my diesel Renault Kadjar 1.6 which I love but at the minute I'm not sure what to get next. Considering a Corolla sports tourer and indeed a Hyundai Tucson amongst others as my brother has the non plug in hybrid 230hp Tuscon and loves it

@@dancooper2072 aye but being a new Renault they're plagued with potential faults as one fault in particular is where an engine failure error comes up on the dashboard screen and tho' the engine hasn't failed the car needs brought to a dealer for a software upgrade and I'm not sure if I could be bothered with all the problems it has. There's also an issue with the boot lid on some models not having been properly seam welded from the factory again meaning it needs replacing. Granted they can't all be like that, I found these problems out via a Facebook page I was momentarily part of and I'm not ruling it out entirely but I am a bit wary when it comes to that car for that reason which is why I'm veering towards other models.

Was just thinking about this the other day how the ICE customers still get pampered with their roofed area and us EV drivers get nothing.....not even a bin! The irony is that an EV driver is way more likely to buy coffee/food in the forecourt because of the extra time required so you would think they'd at least be given a shelter! What I would like to see is an EV only forecourt along with services such as food etc. Who knows how better the product would be then but it arguably would be better. Having said that Irish motorway forecourts tend to be quite good with their offerings.

Did Victorians have to ban Horses, to get people to buy ICE cars? If they are any good people will migrate to them, like we did with Diesels. Pre-1985 Very few diesel cars sold, but manufacturers made them better. A Diesel family car will do 600 MILES on a tank of fuel, I know we don't drive 600 miles in one go, but It is important. I'll explain I used to have an Honda cub motorcycle, it did about 215MPG it had a miniscule fuel tank - no gauge either - it was next to impossible to run out of fuel, because you needed it to be nearly empty to put 2 litres in. Great work Bob, good to see you back, Hope you will be back to full health this year, stay positive. (Martin Harlow College)

I like that there are different EV’s now but the problems remain the same. And in my climate where -25…30C is possible in winter, EV’s lose so much range it’s not even funny. But still our great politicians have decided that EV’s are the ONLY option. I personally think the decision will be delayed many times over. But if future technology development solves all the biggest issues, I’m all for it.

Goes to show what I have said. Buying an EV or PHEV is ok if you can charge at home every night, only drive about 150 klm per day and you have no problem allowing a car to dictate the way you live your life.

Ah the i4 aint bad either. Same power for the edrive40 as the i5 edrive40, 20k less. Regarding chargers, I was at a 75kw Easy go, got 49. ESB 50Kw, got 37....and was the only car in both cases....the Ionity are the only reliable ones, if you can get one available. Also, lets not mention the asshats in ICE cars using the spaces to 'park'.

Great review Bob. The Irish charging situation puts me off getting an EV for as long as possible. It's no coincidence that it costs as much to charge an EV per 100km at an ESB charge point as it does to use petrol for a typical 6l/100km car. If it was half the price the incentive would be there to put up with the downsides as you mentioned, but price gouging reigns unfortunately. Not everyone can charge at night rate and there's a cost associated with that as well before you even get started. Not to mention those who don't have a driveway to park safely overnight. Rip off Ireland as usual.

Bob, you're super wrong about your conclusion that all-of-the-above is the right strategy for car going forward. Also super wrong about economics being the way we'll solve the Climate Crisis. This is the war to end all wars. You don't fight a war effort by indulging people with cars that don't make them compromise severely. It's great that you love cars. I do too. But they cannot be permitted to continue to crash our planet. EVs are the only car solution that approximates sustainability and even it severely flawed because the production emissions are too high and we churn through cars like they're candy. The BMW i5 requires 17 tons CO2e emissions to produce, and that's BMW's first fully audited and reported figure on any of their cars. Your annual CO2e budget right now, were we to have one would be 4 tons of CO2e for everything including food, shelter, common infrastructure, ....everything. For zero carbon it is 2 tons per person globally. So cars and buying a new one every 3 years as many do with leases and company cars, is completely unsustainable as built today. I'm sorry to be the one to explain to you that we've overplayed our hand and haven't the remaining emissions to fuss around with hybrids, hydrogen, and biofuels. We're losing the war dramatically and killing not just our future selves, but most living things on the planet. It's time to pop off that conservative delay tactic of getting what you want and complaining that things aren't like they used to be. We need fast action. BTW, the sustainable solutions are electric rail (trams, regional, and long distance) and micromobility where the vehicles are much lower emissions to produce and use far less electricity to power. You remember the bubble cars of post WW2 that were built because Europeans had no money, few resources and still needed to get around. That's where we are, only emissions is our limiting factor, no availability of manufacturing or money to purchase cars. I hope your health improves, Bob, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I don’t disagree with your comment. And yet, there’s too much focus on the consumer to fix everything, the car is the end product of a huge global supply chain full of carbon - just look how bad shipping is with muck diesel. We need stronger government legislation to demand carbon reduction by going after corporations. Yes we all individually have to play our part but we can’t do the bulk of it while corporations continue to rake in record profits, growth at any cost models.
