Hi Pat, just like to congratulate you on excellent videos. You deserve every success in your channel. I will never be able to afford an i8, but I still have an interest in this unique car. I own the little brother of the i8, an i3S. Two unique cars, that will probably never be made again, due to the manufacturing cost. All the best from a subscriber in the UK. 👍🇬🇧

it can be opened, very easily aswell.. two string pull latches behind a cover by the door sill and then it pops and chimes like a regular bimmer, lift from the air duct sides while you gently pull and slide the hood up and and it goes up. put a screwdriver in the holes of the hood arms. it wont fall down if you put a plastic box or whatever under the other side, one side screwdrived. walk over to the other and screwdrive that ad well, ur hoods now open and safely set up voilá the OG warranty of these are already not valid so feel free to top of ur coolant. these suck as much coolant as the i3s :)

There's a module that shuts everything off in the event of an impact. It will require a service center to sort this out.

The whole time watching this upload, which is another one of your great I8 uploads, I had to chuckle to myself in thinking of yesteryear where you'd pull into a gas station and you'd tell the attendant, "Fill er up and check the oil and water please." Meanwhile, six hours later the attendant has pulled all his hair out and is just wandering around talking to himself. 🤣 Now back to your upload. What happens if the release cable you pull on breaks? For me it would be I'm SOL, but I know you have at least Plans A and B. Also, can you release either cable first, or must you release the Driver's side first? When closing the hood and locking it back into place, does the "push down" procedure require two people to do it simultaneously, or can one person do one side and then move around to do the other side? Save the Wave.🙋🏼♂️

Thanks Peter! I still remember those days where the Hess station had an employee that would do what you needed. You still have some of that in NJ but for the rest of us, no dice. Funny thing, I bought some oil that Edo recommended called Motul and it comes in a metal can. Most people wouldn't remember those days of using the spout to pierce the can, but I do. This can has a lid, tho, and is rectangular. But it reminded me of yesteryear. The hood release can be initiated by either side, first. No one has reported a broken hood release cable, but I may be able to remove the wheel well in the front to get to the linkage if I needed to. Worst case, the fender has to come off. It's composite like the Corvette, so a few screws and clips and it's out of the way. I try to have someone help me close it so it goes down on both sides to ensure alignment doesn't change. The linkage at the front of the hood is lightweight and it's easy to set it down and not have it properly aligned. I've had to close and reopen because the gap was visually different. But, it can be closed one at a time. In fact, you can open the hood by yourself, because I've done it, but you have to contort yourself in order to make sure the hood is balanced properly during movement. It's quite the adventure but not recommended, so I wouldn't cover that in the video. ;)
@petercarey68834 жыл бұрын
Ha, ha. I remember buying the oil in quart cans AND I still have two of the metal spouts that would be pierced into them so that the oil could be poured into the engine. I don't know if you can even find them in antique stores anymore, but as very young boy I remember my going with Grandfather and buying oil in quart glass bottles which had screw-on metal tops shaped like a funnel and they had a small screw-on metal cap at the small end of the funnel cap. That's interesting about Motul coming in metal cans and being in rectangular cans no less. If you would save me an empty one I'd appreciate it. Thank you for the further explanation on opening and closing the hood. Even though you've seen no reports on those release cable breaking, there is an old adage that the longer you go without breaking something, the closer you get to breaking it.🤦♂️😉

@@petercarey6883 Murphy's Law is always in effect with machines. So, I predict we'll have a problem with these cables eventually. There are other problem areas on the i8 which I'm working on solutions for right now. I'll save you a container, no problem. If you visit patsgarageonline.com there should be a photo there. They come in 2qt cans. Extra special! You should take one of those push-in oil spouts to get chromed. It would make a super cool feature to add to the garage. I hadn't heard about the glass jar oil. Amazing! I enjoy watching the Project Farm channel and they recently covered an episode of testing 70 year old oil. Quite interesting! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6urnaubqsSsq68

how is the big battery is cooled in this car and is it possible to upgrade the cooling radiator for it. i heard that the battery gets hot very quickly
@PatsGarageOnline3 жыл бұрын
The high voltage battery is cooled by the air conditioning refrigerant lines. There is no upgrade to the AC system available. In fact, the AC compressors on these cars, as well as the i3, can fail and send shrapnel throughout the system, requiring complete removal and replacement of these refrigerant lines. In the i8, this repair is $18k USD due to all the labor.

Hi Pat, my i8 just popped out an engine coolant low warning while driving and it disappeared after I restarted my car and popped out again after half hours driving. I just checked the engine coolant fluid, it is still adequate. I'm curious will a mulfunction sensor damage the engine

It will likely be a damaged sensor. See the description of this video for the SIB and part numbers

I had a low coolant warning and refilled my coolant. Didn't realize the system was under pressure, engine overheated on the freeway 😥. Made it back home alright but now I'm trying to figure out how to vacuum the air out of the system. Do you know how?
@PatsGarageOnline4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about the overheating condition. It's possible you have a leak. Air is getting into the system on the engine side of the car and can't escape. BMW has a special part and procedure for bleeding the system. This isn't something I could do at home. www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/i12-i8-cou/repair-manuals/17-cooling/17-00-cooling-check/1VnYA6xzNl

I want to connect the battery to an external charger
@PatsGarageOnline Жыл бұрын
By connecting the charging cable, it charges the high voltage battery which then tops off the 12v battery automatically.
@oilquickiebymc7380 Жыл бұрын
@@PatsGarageOnline Thanks for the answer. My BMW dealer in Germany told me otherwise. He said that the 12 V battery is charged only when driving and not when plugged in.Your answer is more convincing.
@PatsGarageOnline Жыл бұрын
@@oilquickiebymc7380 You're welcome. My answer comes directly from the service manual. Please refer your dealer to BMW i I12 i8 Coupe / Repair Manuals and Technical Data / 61 General vehicle electrical system / 61 25 High-voltage accumulator system. Copy/Paste directly from that article: "When charging the high-voltage battery by means of the charging cable, the 12 V battery will be automatically charged as well."
