BMW I8 Hybrid ECU Tuning and Dyno Test by VRTuned

Can you tune a hybrid car with an electric motor? You sure can!

We are doing 3rd or 4th gear full throttle pulls. So there is no decel or regen going on.

I always thought you needed to mod your engine, intake, and exhaust if you're ever tuning something. Do flashes actually work? So you got like a 30hp increase from this?

Tuning will always make the biggest performance increase especially on turbocharged cars. Basic bolt ones like an intake and exhaust should not require a custom tune.

For the limited exhausts on the market, yes it would only if it included the downpipe from the turbo.

What is the max HP you have put through the stock transmission? Is there a HP/TQ limit for that trans?

Not sure how much the transmission can handle but you would need to do some serious upgrades to make enough power to damage the transmission.

You have a lower drivetrain loss because the electric motor doesn't have much loss to it than if it was a mechanical 4wd.

for such a cool car it makes me sad how lazy bmw was with the powerplant. they could have definitely used some stronger electric motors and used the 2l 4cyl. ATLEAST.

What makes you think they were lazy? They chose it for a variety of reasons, size and weight being just some of them. You’d have to make an already very wide car wider by 100mm or so to add just one more cylinder. Plus the weight addition. I don’t see why an i4 would be any better, people like you that don’t get it would just say should have put an i5 in. AT LEAST. No.

Engine swapping the i8 is possible. But it's pretty complicated since it's a hybrid. If it wasn't a hybrid, there wouldn't be a problem.

Anything is possible when it comes to swaps. Look up v10 E30 swap or LS beetle swap, everything can be done. But it would depend on how much money the owner/shop would want to put into it.

Bear in mind it’s a carbon fibre chassis. So quite a bit more difficult to cut and shut the chassis to fit a different engine
