Very helpful . Recently acquired a 1999 with the same problem, fans came on at key on, plus hard cold starting. I deduced that the temp sensor was also telling the ECU that the bike was warm and did not need enrichment during starting. I did remove the coil pack as recommended in the factory manual.

@@dudenamedclem No, I actually bought a used set of sensors off of ebay. I installed the sensor and then it went bad again in Phoenix when it was 116 in traffic, super cool. I bought a second set of used sensors, but I don't really want to get bit by this again. I bought a coolant temp sensor with a pigtail for a 99 BMW 325i. The threads are a smaller diameter. I'm going to have a machine shop make me a bushing that will screw into the block, that the sensor will screw into and use the wiring off the old sensor and the new pigtail to wire it. The other option is to "smartly" remove material from the old sensor where it is swedged together, then open it up, replace the element with the new one, and re swedge it to hold the new sensor and make the harness. Email me If you want and I'll send pics of how to do this.

Hi! How are you. I have a k1200lt, but haven't used it in like 2 years. And the temperature rises a lot when the motorcycle is stopped or in traffic, because the fans do not turn on. I checked the fuses and they are fine. It could be the fan relay, or it could be this temperature sensor. what is your advice

Kirk, I take it there is NO typical "thermostat" on the LT. You, or anybody else dealing with the radiator, and cooling service has never mentioned one. Am I correct to conclude isn't one ???

There is one at the bottom of the right radiator

Hay Kirk, I recently had to lay my 05 bmw k1200 and the motor sounds good until it start now to overhead, how to tell if it is the sensor or the water-pump?

When this sensor fails could it cause the fans to not turn on?

Yes. I would start there after checking fuses and connections.

Hey Kirk....Just got a used 2001 k1200 LT. The temp gauge stays pretty close to the red, but not in the red. Is that normal for these models. The fans do come on when it gets close. they don't come on when it's down in low temp.

My experience has been that they run up toward the red but quickly come down again when the fans come on. Going up big hills or mountains will kick them on due to load and elevation. They should run normally in the somewhere in the middle when moving. If yours is running hot all of the time, that is not really normal and it may need a top off with coolant or a thermostat.
