This may be a little late in posting but some of the problems experienced below with the cap style oil filter wrenches can be explained by not counting the flutes on the filter. The Bosch 3330 filter has 14 flutes while the Fram PH3614 has 15 flutes. Since I also own a Polaris RZR 570 that uses similar filters I have both 14 & 15 flute cap wrenches and believe me it makes a difference as far as grab on the filter. Hope this helps some of you who may not have ever noticed the different flute count.

Missing here is mention of the large o-ring that should be changed on the filter cover before replacing. Likely oil leak if not replaced, guaranteed leak if missing.

Just a FYI for those that don't want to buy a funnel. A standard water bottle will thread right into the fill plug hole. You can craft a funnel from a simple bottle of water. (minus the water, of course)

For years, I have had great respect and awe for BMWs and the way they are engineered, having owned an E30 convertible that I drove to 350k miles and an E23. However, I think they hired Mario and Luigi to develop the system used to change the oil on the K1200. I have never spilled so much oil in my many years of car and MC oil services. The O'Reilly wrench I bought did not fit the OEM BMW filter that the previous owner had used, so I had to drill holes and sink sheet metal screws through it and into the filter to get it out. I replaced it with the K&N filter with the 14mm hex nut molded onto the top. I'll also be replacing the hex screws with stainless.

Thanks for posting this. I found that the BMW filters come with a new washer for the drain plug and a new rubber seal for the oil filter access panel. The aftermarket filters do not come with these parts. My guess is that these probably do not require replacement at every oil change, but will wear out in time and could leak if not replaced periodically. Are they available separately without buying the $23 BMW filter?

I was hoping to save some time before getting on the ground by watching and getting the tool sizes. I appreciate everything else I learned though. thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

Agree! Would be nice if the hex bolt sizes were provided (8mm drain plug and 5mm oil filter cover). When I purchased a genuine BMW oil filter, the drain plug crush washer and oil filter cover rubber O-ring was included. (No paper label to remove) Makes sense to always replace these items to prevent leaks. I think BMW was stupid to put the oil filler plug on the side of the engine. Good luck putting oil in without a special funnel. Do people actually carry one of those big funnels when they go touring? Why did BMW put a hard case cartridge style filter INSIDE the engine??? Who does that? WHY??? Be prepared to make an oily mess when you change your oil. Also, not mentioned in the video, is how many quarts of oil are needed. (3.7)
@kirksmotorrad11 жыл бұрын
It is hit and miss with these cap wrenches. Make sure it has room when you stick the extension through and doesnt push against the filter. You can always drill a couple of holes in the cap wrench to fasten some screws through it into the filter.
@dannyj19699 жыл бұрын
I have a 2008 LT and you do not have to remove the center stand "bracket" to gain access to the drain plug. The later models with the elecro center stand have a different oil pan in that they relocated the drain plug more forward right next to the oil filter access panel. There is a small skid plate to remove though to gain access to one of the 3 bolts of that access panel. . No big deal.
@kirksmotorrad9 жыл бұрын
+Danny J Just remove the filter access cover if you can get to that without an issue. It does a great job of draining too.

Make sure you are using an oil that is designed for use in motorcycles. It has a higher level of ZDDP for better protection. Automotive oil has a reduced amount of ZDDP but it is needed in motorcycles for the transmission and wet clutch applications.
@kirksmotorrad10 жыл бұрын
Use of motorcycle specific oil is not necessary in the K1200 engine. It does not have a wet clutch or an oil linked transmission.

If an automotive oil filter fits, can I use it? I just happened to be changing oil on my LT a few weeks ago shortly after changing oil on both of our Toyotas and thought "That sure looks close to the size of my Toyota's filter." Sure enough, the diameter, height and seal matches up perfectly with the BMW brand oil filter. And it spun on by hand with no problem. I wasn't brave enough to leave it on, though, without first getting an opinion from a reliable source.
@kirksmotorrad6 жыл бұрын
It probably is the same filter. If everything lines up right, give it a try. My guess is that it will cross reference with a known filter for the LT.

Note: that I have been getting filters that have been a little small for the tool to take out of the motor. The tool will turn but the filter will not. I had to sweek the points on the tool in a little so it would bite the filter. Also put a rag on the tool but that also did not work. What is with then filters?? On is big the next one is small. The BMW filter was Small, then was big.. The Mann filters all look to be small..

I just found your video for oil change. Great info. I've got a 1999 k1200lt with a rear engine seal leak and found your comment about synthetic oil causing it to leak quite interesting. Could you elaborate on sources for that or is it just your own experience, and once it's leaking, would the leak be reduced going back to regular non- synthetic oil?
@kirksmotorrad3 жыл бұрын
I found an oil analysis article years ago on it and it is my personal experience with that being the case. If you run your oil between half to 3/4 up the sight glass on the center stand, that can help reduce the oil as well. Ultimately the rear main will need to get addressed.

Hello, my name is Pete. I started watching your video's because I just purchased a 07 k1200lt with 12k miles. The bike has been running just fine until recently. After I serviced the engine oil and was taking it out for a ride and it died. Almost as if it ran out of gas. It has fuel. I tried starting it and it ran for about 5 seconds and died. Now it just cranks over and doesn't show any signs of starting. I check the fuses, all are good. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.

Yep. It sounds like something failed in the fuel system. Open the tank and turn the key on. If you see fuel stirring around you have a leak. It happens a lot.

My LT's oil level window/glass is no longer clear. Looks to me like there is a film on the inside. Any idea on how to clean this? Or must it be replaced? I found some references on Google by searching on "clean k1200 oil glass". Some refer to replacing the oil glass and cleaning the outside of them after cleaners etched the outside surface, but no one seems to talk about being able to clean the film on the inside. I'll replace it if I have to, but would rather just clean it if it's easy enough.
