I bought one brand new in May 2019 knowing that the new version was coming. I brought it as I recognised this is the last ever RWD straight 6 1 series BMW will do ,and maybe the last ever hot hatch of this kind. If I could afford it , I would garage this car as I think it's a future classic but unfortunately this is my daily car however I only average 6000 a year so I'm hoping to keep up its value. I have to say it's a ridiculously quick car , you'll get A45s , S3, RS3 Golf Rs come behind you but you know aswell as they do that nothing completes with this car, it's a true hot hatch with the right credentials. Awesome car ,buy one now if you can!

Spot on, my old M235i with sports cat and mperf exhaust was the best sounding car I’ve ever owned. Used gummi pflege round the door seals to get rid of creaks. Interesting to hear it might have just been the tyre pressure

You can get bimmercode and do it yourself, to turn off stop start, via a vgate OBD adapter and your phone

I’ve always liked the M-lite cars, my missus has had two M135i now. Best car so far is my current 8V RS3, I love the sound and after a few fairly cheap mods the handling is pretty damn good. Although, I am looking to change and coming to the dark side by the looks of it, went for a test drive of an F80 M3 CP, lovely car and the interior and seats are just fantastic.

Mac35 Hi mate. I’d love an RS3. Had a number of 5 cylinder Audi’s including a Ur quattro in the 90’s. Curious what mods you applied to yours to make it handle better. The early RS3’s seem to suffer a bad rap on the handling front? Thanks PR

paul robinson I fitted a 034 Motorsport rear ARB to my 8p RS3 and Bilstein B14 coilovers. On my 8V I have fitted an H&R rear ARB also fitted white line drop links on the front, they are much sturdier than the OEM ones, you could flex them with your hands.

Great to see you enjoying yourself in this one. I wasn't a fan of the 1 series until the LCI face lift. I do think about getting a M140i just based on the videos and how most people that have one seem to love them. You can retrofit MSA memory so it remembers your selection even after ignition cycle. However, your BMW dealer wont do that for you and more as it technically changes the vehicles tax band.

It’s M-Tech with BMW Shaun, Motec is a engine management manufacturer used mainly in Motorsport And it’s Ackerman geometry, which is the geometric arrangement that caters for the different radi of the inner and outer wheel 👍

@@ForensicDetailing DSC off is it's own mode. Many people get confused when they say it's in Sport+ with DSC off, where they're actually switching from Sport+ to DSC off. I know whatcha mean though!

I just checked the table it has the soft throttle setting but that wouldnt slow you down as such right its just how the pedal applies throttle relative to where the pedal is positions.. so like in sport+ its like 50% throttle is 50% power (just for example). but in DSC is lits 50% throttle is like 30% power or some sort of non linear curve right. basically if your going flat out it wont matter.

I’m in a Honda integra dc2 at the moment, but will be looking at a newer car soon. The M140i is on my hotlist along with a golf r and a Honda Civic fk8 it’s hard to find a good all rounder with plenty of power and tuning available but also is half decent on a motorway. Looking forward to test driving the M140i and golf r

TheElnoopy The FK8 is one of the best in the business - you feel like the car is an extension of yourself. Pure driving feel and it pulls all the way to the redline. And the tuning potential is unreal - people are getting 500bhp+ with just bolt-ons

Cameron Jackson, I did test drive a fk8 when they first came out and was amazed at the grip and the poise. It felt like a 4wd the way it just stuck to the road. But the prices are a little high still, I will look to probably make my mind up back end of this year or going into the new year next as my work will shift down south so I would be looking to do a 320mile trip each way a few times a month (this is why I was tempted by the M140i with better mpg)

great phil. no real noticable difference to the feel of the car. The whole motech package is mainly about looks with the exception of the remus exhaust which is wonderfull. Im really glad I had the work done they handled the car with lots of car and ive enjoyed owning it more than when it was stock.

Have an F56 MINI with 300bhp and LSD. Unfortunately I am not a good enough driver of rear wheel drive to really enjoy it, especially round bends. Same BMW build quality though. Don’t hate any cars as different people like different aspects of cars so each to their own.

Test drove one, thought I was going to buy it before hand, but it wasn’t raw enough and the standard wheels were not BMW’s best effort lately... No cheaper way to go that fast though so understand their appeal to many.

yer I totally understand that. when I drove my m135i back for the first time it was almost like a normal car that you knew had a lot of power. which sounds incredibly basic thing to say.. but I think this is a 1 series with a big engine and big M sport brakes. but lots of it is just 1 series still. but i think the remus zort system goes a long way to making this more fun as well. I sometimes forget this. I think its a car that perhaps at least 50% of guys that buy them make changes to. but if you change the question to this. What other new model cars could you buy for 29 grand brand new are better than this m140.

Forensic Unplugged, yes that’s a fantastic re frame of the question: there isn’t anything new comparable at the price point (but if you spec one decently the lost price was knocking on 40! I specced one up at a bmw dealer with pro nav hk heated seats/ speed limit display/ reverse sensors and camera and cruise control (the same kit as you would get standard in a i30n) and it was 39k! I think the issue is with most new cars the weight and ever increasing refinement make them less drivers machines. I thought about buying one and getting the birds conversion done but then your having to declare a modified car if you want to fully cover your ass insurance wise and that’s not going to be cheap. Bmw should have a birds type m140 as standard like a full fat m version of the 1 series!!

@@stu4181 reg got a brand new fully loaded shadow edition for 27k. but yer at certain times they were not this cheap. I think its about 50 quid a year extra to have the motech pack on it. but I declared it to my insurer.

@@stu4181 technically it could void warrenty for certain things. but so could any modification. its an issue though, you might not want to modify a car before its 3 years manufacturer warrenty is run. Its a big problem for BMW they get kids turning up saying theres a problem with there engines and they been JB4 and thrashed to within an inch of their life etc... but like all things if you are reasonably sensible your Ok. I have mine done close to the car coming to end of warrenty and just took it easy. Ihave no engine maps on mine.

I owned an ep3 type r for 7 enjoyable years (apart from the image but that's all personal taste) and I do miss how rawness of the honda when really pushing hard but on the other hand I love the silky smooth powerful engine and refinement of my m140i. The Honda felt light and nimble, the m140i is more gt car than hot hatch but the kick down is addictive. Rides along on a huge wave of torque.

Mate,I love your channel but please don't be encouraging everyone to be turning their traction control off on a 350bhp rear wheel drive car...there's a reason so many m140's get wrapped around trees by kids on cheap pcps. Few people have the skills to handle the car safely on public roads. Phenomenal cars though and glad you love yours....

I appreciate the sentiment but Im very cautious when I do these videos and Im very mindfull of responsilibity thats why you hear me talking about staying within speed limits and not driving like an idiot. But quite simply I like to drive the car with DCS off and sports gearbox mode and theres nothing wrong with saying that. Cars are becoming too fast and too cheap Ive done videos on this. Lots of kids are indeed wrapping these cars around trees because they believe the car will behave under load all the times.. this car is no joke under full throttle in the wrong conditions the back of these cars can kick out quite rapidly. But that mode is there for a reason and I like to use it.

They are quick but very very skittish to the point where they feel dangerous in the slightest damp conditions. It also feels extremely light and with the power + rear wheel drive is not the best combo. I test drove one, yes they are quick but also very dangerous in the wrong hands. It’s useless 80-90% of the time when it’s raining or wet in the uk and you can’t put the power down. This is where the golf r, facelift Audi s3 shine. Useable power Regardless of weather conditions plus they look much better than the m140i. BMW could have made m140 more aggressive instead of looking like just any old 1 series

yes.. :) your right. Today I met reg and followed behind him in cold wet greasy winter roads. he was driving on a straight road in sports+ at a sensible speed and I shit you not the back snapped out.. just a uneven country road with a lot of camber on the road and some mud and it stepped out :) In wet or greasey cold conditions the M140 is a car you need to drive with a lot of caution. 4WD cars are going to put their power down so much better. however they lack the fun factor. The golf R looks nice but its a bit dull same with the S3 really. Golf has some quality issues as well as a guy into detailing the wafer thin panels and crappy upholstery puts me off the golfs... dunno though wouldnt say no because they are such a cool car.

Any rear wheel drive car putting down that much power and also running MPSS tyres that hits a pool of standing water at 120mph while under full acceleration has a good chance of wiping out. Watch chris harris review of the M135i V the audi RS3 if you want to understand the car. Ive tracked the m135i and M140i many times and they are awesome cars for the money. They are not perfect but no car is.. Ive driven or experienced all the sort of competition and you just cant beat the way this car handles (in dry conditions) ((cant beat in terms of fun, not outright grip or cornering capability))

My reason for not being able to get one: 1) insurance is too much on these for a 22 year old being quoted near £2500. Blame the youngsters getting these and trashing them as RWD bite them. 2) financial don't have the money to buy one. These cars do look cool in black and with a different colour strut which you may see behind the kidney grills.

An audi RS6 is £1550 if I was 26 and a cayman surprisingly was £1200 at my age 😂. Just shows age and no claims bonus help lower the premiums. These cars really are a bargain for what you get though

I wasnt at full throttle, but its a freezing cold day with cold tyres, and these tyres will never hook up in these conditions. Car is fine I track it with other M140's.

How would you say an lsd benefits the m140i?

@@cheukinator the main reason I say limited slip differential is traction , with an open diff you can spin out all the power on one wheel. A LSD will help redistribute torque . My M135i was instantly better when I fitted the quaife LSD, traction and cornering much better .👍

@@cheukinator hi mate no understeer to speak of the Quaife Lsd is bullet proof with lifetime warranty , I also have a B12 suspension kit that's Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks amongst a lot of other mods most recently I've fitted a high pressure fuel pump upgrade and pure stage 2 turbo 👍

had a great conversation many years ago with Munich Legends who told me about this and its to do with the way they are engineer'd and setup... your getting stuck at the first hurdle a bit there so just assume its complete untrue and forget about it.

Forensic Unplugged If cars were engineered solely to go in straight lines they would not have any steering wheels and locked straight ahead wheels, and if they were solely engineered to go in circles the wheels would be locked in one direction, or they could be something like a Tesco shopping trolley that is incapable of doing either. What I meant was that by making a statement like that - you’re implying that they’re not engineered to go around corners well, or did I misunderstand your statement? BMW’s are some of the best handling cars out there - the engineering goes down all the way to suspension components, steering setups, light weight components to reduce unsprung mass, 50:50 weight distribution, corner brake control, rear wheel drive; the list is endless... All those things are built in and engineered so that it can go around corners better. They’re engineered to go around corners as fast as possible and be as stable as possible at Autobahn speed at the same time, so I don’t think your statement “BMW’s are made to go in straight lines” is very accurate

@@Diebaas407 yes so I am working on the assumption anyone listening to this statement is aware of the fact BMW's have steering wheel and can turn. Tell you what though just forget about this one chris, if I can though I will try and get some proper info next time Im down there although my todo list has about 10000 things to do on it.

Sorry Jon - didn’t mean to offend, just trying to understand what you meant. I’ve owned quite a few BMW’s in my time and I can tell you that I think they’re actually engineered to go around corners more than going in “straight lines” - so merely trying to understand what you meant, so if you do get around to that 10001 thing on the list please educate me 😀 But lets leave this here then 😁

@@Diebaas407 no Im not offended I just shouldnt have mentioned it, if I heard this I would want to know more. Reg was stood next to me when the chap there explained it but it was over 5 years ago. they really understand the cars there, specially the older ones. its more like they want to go straight as you corner but even thats not explaining it well.. but ill find out next time im down there who knows maybe if its cool and interesting we can do a video on it.

I don’t have one...Because it’s the most boring looking BMW you can get, the interior is terrible, it’s rear wheel drive, and it’s not a proper M car 🤷🏻‍♂️
