It's a lovely car, but to be honest it is still pretty high riding, width is still pretty wide bit relative to boats like the m3 or other performance sedans this is as compact as things get nowadays sadly

They are both around 1570kg. M2 is shorter but it's much wider and taller.

M2 is 4475mm and M3 e46 is 4492mm. M2 Competition is around 80kg heavier then standard one. You get another turbo more cooling and some heavier suspension bits. M3 e46 weight is in between of M2 and M2C.

The REAL modern version of the E30 M3 is actually the GT86 with exactly the same spec : - 2.0L 4 cyl engine making 200hp (E30 has 2.3L 4 cyl engine making 200hp) - rwd (E30 is also rwd) - manual (E30 also has manual) - 2+2 coupe (E30 is also a 2+2 coupe) - 1167kg - 1298kg weight (E30 also weights 1165kg - 1300kg)

As a daily the m2 or m2 competition with a manual is almost perfect. Small but prectical, quick but not reckless and it looks great. 718s or gts is also a $90k car, I would imagine bmw competition is high 60s at most? Seems like a great choice.

I ordered one with DCT as the only option and the MSRP is $62,795 which includes shipping and handling in Southern California. Since I've purchased several M3s and my current 2017 M2 from them, the dealer is selling me the car at MSRP. I'm buying this model because it's a genuine M car unlike my 2017. This will be my weekend car and the 2017 will be my every day work car.

@@H1delta you are lucky! Getting the car at MSRP makes it a fairly good deal. I too had a 2017 M2, but I traded mine in back in April and was still able to get almost full value back with the trade in. I actually found Bramman BMW by me in West Palm Beach still trying to sell 2018 M2 for $66k. My car was marked up to $65k a year ago, but talked most the mark up off. The M2C had just about everything I wished mine had. In 10 months of ownership, I went thru 2 interations of the M2 and was not happy about that. Felt like a slap on my face, lol. I imagine M2C will sell with about a $10k markup for most people around my area making it a bad deal. I could get a M3/M4 for close to that amount and no markup on those. M3 would have been my ultimate choice. I got a car I love more than either of those, but enjoy your M2C. It should be a sweet car! I really will wonder how much better or faster it will be compared to the original M2.

Michael McDonald I was about to argue because 718 is still the less expensive mid engine sport car that money can buy and it is extremely road happy in any situation. however, I would agree with you. I would still take 2016 last gen cayman GTS over any BMW, but 718? I back up a bit, this M2 is too good.

I am an old guy with bad eyes and slow reaction. My boxster has the PDK. I spent 3.5 years on a farm / ranch in Montana, so had enough of clutches. Operated a John Deere tractor "popper" with A Hand Clutch. the PDK on the Ring was great. Mash the brakes and it down shifts to perfect gear. 242 laps no crash. Not a car guy. The Ring is the only race track I have been to or driven on. oops not a track a public toll road. DCT and PDK are essentially sequential racing trans, ha my excuse. dreaming of june 2019. sunset orange.

I lied to myself when I bought the M2 as a manual (ordered new). I bloody LOVED the DCT M2 but thought to myself, obviously I want the manual since I'm a manual kinda guy(like you) and came from a M3 e46 Manual. Go and drive one and make your own mind please, I never bonded with the rather bad manual gearbox in the M2. My brother just bought a Renault Megane R.S 275 Cup, that manual is several times better than the M2 manual I had.

I owned the E92 M3 and have an M2 Comp on order. After test driving the first-gen M2 I can say that you can feel the weight of the E92 and you had to rev the snot out of it to get into the power band. Love how lite the M2 Comp feels and the power is always available. Sound in the E92 was great (and better) than the M2 Comp but willing sacrifice. Can't wait to own the M2 Comp.

I actually think the 718 doesn't sound too bad. Yes, it's got nothing on the old H6, but Flat 4s generally sound pretty good for a 4 cylinder - they always have a growl.

I own an ATS V and just got my M2 C 5 weeks ago. The ATS V is a fabulous car, I attended the Cadillac V performance lab at COTA and the ATS is truly a great performance car. I love the M2 C. It’s harsher riding in town than the ATS V which is disappointing, however the quality of the BMW stands out. The interior is much nicer. The power delivery of the M2C is better when you’re in M1 or M2 mode. Fabulous engine and brakes. I like the steering in the ATS a little more. In short both are great cars. I looked at buying a Cayman S but the roughness of the 4 cylinder engine nixed my consideration.

Best part is a simple tune you'll have 100+HP and 100+ more torque and a beast of a package. But I think 400HP is the ultimate balance for this car. Obv some people will want more.

I’ve got a feeling BMW have responded to the slight criticism of the standard M2 by producing this. Arguably it’s the car it should always have been. I think with the original M2 they were worried about stepping on the M3 and M4’s toes. With a new one just around the corner and the launch of Competition M3s and 4s plus a CS version, they have more wiggle room. They also had to distance it from the B58 powered M Performance cars, which were as fast or faster in certain circumstances, if only in a straight line. BMW seem determined to up their game on all models recently. New Z4, 8 and 3 all sound promising. As a BMW fan I hope so.

Got the original M2, don't think I can afford another bout of BMW depreciation even though this makes me want to upgrade. A shame they couldn't get some more weight out of it to at least keep it the same weight as the original. I realise that's the extra turbo & cooling but yea, should have worked harder to get that weight down as low as poss and really feel the extra power and torque. Engine sounds nice in that vid, that's the main thing everyone was worrying about

same situation, felt screwed over tbh. They marketed it like it was going to be like the 1M, "limited" production, what they didn't say was built til they release a competition lol. Sadly all the things the competition had was pretty much what we all wanted and was happy to pay extra for from day one. I do think the original M2 has a better sound but I would have liked optional seats, M setting buttons (theres a damn gap where it was before on the damn steering wheel!) and bigger brakes. Majority of the original M2 owners could afford the competition. They screwed over the first lot of F90 M5 buyers too releasing a competition literally 2 months after release.

Chris Dorgan I’d keep the M2 you already have anyway. I’m not feeling BMW’s new grille design. I don’t know why they’d abandon their main trademark design trait. The kidney grille is iconic, the new single piece design actually more resembles Kia which has always been trying to resemble BMW to a degree.

People say "they never said limited production" no they didn't say limited. They made suggestions that they weren't going to build many, then they said they would only build what customers ordered for a limited time. Next minute, they got loads of orders, so decided oh hey, we'll build loads then and drop them on the dealers once the initial waiting list has been served. Boom arse falls out of them so they go OK now we need to pick this back up, rename, the engine it should have had anyway (they probably just needed to get rid of the left over N55's before the reg changes) & all the options the car should have had from the beginning. I sound so bitter, and I suppose I am really because had they stuck to only delivering cars that were ordered by customers we wouldn't be in such a bad position with them and then the release of the Competition wouldn't sting so much. This is why I'll never be buying a new BMW, it was a life lesson. However saying that, the car is one of the most exciting cars I've ever owned day to day (not that I've had a mad array of sports cars but I've been around all kinds) it sounds superb with the M Performance Exhaust, it feels quick, it handles great and it's size makes it a joy on a country road when the larger cars look to struggle for room. I do love the car, it's just the anti climax of everything else that's tarnished it a bit.

So its a very hard decision for me personally as I'll be looking to upgrade from the Golf R in the next year or two. I really enjoy motorway driving on the Golf. A common trek for me is north bound via the a1m, breaking off at whetherby then heading to skipton via harogate on the excellent A59. The Golf is fantastic for a nice comfortable quiet motorway cruise, flipping to the monster once i hit the A59. I really fear that buying either this or the Cayman GT4 il really really really HATE the motorway commutes... I already suffer from tinnitus so the last thing i need is to contribute to my deafness with rawer road tyre and wind noise! Its an even harder choice if the Golf R 400 comes out

Drove a 2020 this week. Nice little car - perfectly balanced, etc. Deal breaker for me is the exhaust note. I drive an F-type now and the M2 Comp just whined up and down. No real pops or anything audible. even with the window down I could barely hear anything. Its a big part of the excitement for me (so not getting it.) Otherwise a great price/deal imo.

Mid-Engine is the proper cornering machine to be in all day all time! But yeah that 4-cylinder might be a bit of let down there. A good and fun car not necessary to be super fast. Instead it should be count by how much smile it put into your face. You just can't go wrong with BMW and Porsche. Enjoy driving folks!

I really hope BMW M is back on track again. As far as I have noticed...not witnessed, is that they lost it a bit. I mean BMW M used to be much better than a AMG of RS when it comes to feeling, sound and driveability. The last couple of years they were not so good....but this sounds very good though. I still have faith in BMW though...

Hello, I have a Cayman 981 Gts naturally aspirated six-cylinder 340 hp and I want to change after six years, this would be a candidate, but when I hear the sound of the flat six sports exhaust, the aplomb, the corner entry, it makes me think, if you already have a good sports car, what are you doing thinking about changing. What do I do?

Matthew Bailey not when it comes to sound, which is an important part of the experience. There is a reason why these video reviews of the 2019 M2 don’t include sound clips of the exhaust sound. They only feature the inside manufactured noise coming through the speakers.

It is actually not that close. The Nurburgring time for the M2 Competition vs The Cayman S or Cayman GTS are off by like 12-15 seconds which is actually quite a bit. The M2 on the other hand is the more comfortable everyday driving car as the seating position in the Cayman is like sitting in an upright or 90 degree angle chair. If you are 6 feet tall or over then it becomes quite uncomfortable in day to day traffic. On the track the Porsche Cayman is a better car but on the streets the M2 is the more comfortable and usable car. The Cayman S does look better though and is not as bouncy as the M2 is. The 2 series chassis platform is just bouncy for some reason where that is not the case with the Cayman. The Porsche Cayman was built as a sports car where the BMW 2 series was modified to become a sports car.

Maybe a Japanese rwd car like Toyota 86 or Mazda Miata, or a BMW 135i/140i/ M240i. Or a Subaru Sti or Mitsubishi Evo, if those are still being made.

The updated competition package is a good improvement, but it's still only 25-30lbs lighter than the M4. So from a driver's perspective I'd choose the Cayman

I doubt it, the 1M production numbers were a lot smaller. I'm sure it will go down as a highlight of the M car catalogue though.

No. M2 will not hold value. Only way m2 demands go up is if BMW all of a sudden completely stops M2 production. Which won't happen anytime soon.

I guess competition package would rival a 718 GTS more than a S. Which, engine note aside, has to be the better driving experience. What if I just get an exhaust for the 718? IPE? Fabspeed? Pops Pops?

Why is the engine de turned though?? I mean its got the full m3/4 engine why hold it back 20bhp? Problem is now you cant buy the M2 knowing theres a better car out there. how much extra is it though? manufacturers always seem to tinker with cars and hike the price up each time. Leon Cupra being a perfect example, 10bhp increments for an extra £1000 a time lol

@@stefanfreestylez oh easily. Just don't know why it has less to begin with. It's like the 1 series 114i 103bhp. 116i with around 140bhp and 118i with 170. They all have the exact same engine but they charge you more for the higher power. A tune on all of them ends up at around 220bhp so a 114i can more than double its power with a tune lol

I guess with higher end models like m3/4 compared to this m2 you get soft leather, more availible options and better styling. I can see why someone would pick one or other but foe the 116i thing....lol well theres not much to say either u know what youre buying or youre just another idiot goin in there wasting money.

Mid-engine... balance? Every drive a Carrera GT? Or an MR2? Mid engine cars do anything but balance in a turn... the shift weight from back to front in a really weird way. If anything the RS3 is a competitor, albeit awd. The cayman doesn't come close power wise to either cars.

rather have a cayman. Even a base one would be gd. A bmw is a normal car made sporty, a Porsche is a thoroughbred sports car.

TigR 5hark it means it’s a normal, designed to be a ordinary car from the start but with M-sport and M performance to enhance it’s sportiness. Hence it will never be a Porsche but a sporty ordinary car.

Neil M nah. An M is a 2/3/4/5/6 series made as sportiest as possible. Checkout the Nurburgring lap time. Even the slowest 718 cayman is faster than the m4.

Neil M put them on the same exact conditions and tyres. I doubt the diff will be as what u quoted. Besides the m2 comp cost a fair Amt more than base cayman with pdk, u won’t spec full options on a cayman right? As for the m3 cs, it’s shitload more expensive than the normal m3, which the base cayman can easily beat on the ring.

Neil M BMW M cars to my knowledge are base versions, your 2,3,4,5,6 series, made to be as driver focused and high performance as possible. The M2 comp is arguably the most ‘driver focused’ modern BMW M car they produced till date, hence the comparison with the cayman, a sports car designed from ground up. Just because you are a fan of BMW M racing Pedigree does not mean that the cayman does a worse job as a sports car. After all, the M2 Comp is a sports car and buyers WILL cross shop the this with the cayman. End of story.

Neil M u could say that the M2 has 2 rear seats and a decent sized trunk but the rear seats won’t fit anyone >5’6. As for the trunk space, the cayman has 2 which combined is only 80L less than the m2, then again who drives around with a full trunk all the time? People who require additional trunk or rear seat space will step up to the M3 or the M4. An M2 is a half baked solution for them.
