One problem,….good luck finding a 991.1 C4S for $60k. Also, I owned a 2013 C2S and…..it’s not the best. The later years of 991.1 Like 2015 and 2016 are much better from suspension and steering standpoint. Remember, this is Porsche’s first EPS system. It took a few years of tweaking to get it right. But the 3.8 engine sings and adores revs. And the 991 strikes a good balance of comfort and sport.

We were looking in the $65k range (as mentioned in the video...) and when we filmed this back in the spring there was a bunch of 991.1 C4Ss for sale in that range. When I looked earlier this week for prices to include in the video shown at 2:42 there was only two C4Ss at $65k in the country on AutoTempest but there was SEVERAL 991s of various trims that were as low as $51k and a ton under $65k. The C4Ss I saw were more in the $65-70k range now.

I was reading something on rennlist about this the other day. They were trying to determine what parts and software/firmware might improve this. The consensus was that most of the tactile changes were due to better optimized suspension set up vs parts/software.

The 991 will depreciate less. That should cover the Porsche maintenance premium. All 911's are just elegant and classy. Personally, forget age. I look at all the 911 generations differently than most other manufacturers long standing models. Each generation is a distinct car. I tend not to really think of them in terms of age, "a new 911" or "an old 911". If I see a 997 or a 993 or any other 911 I don't think "that's an old 911", I just think "there's a nice 997". Each has its own special charm. I don't generally look at other maker generations in this way.

@@Bmwguy2011 Have you driven a new BMW? I just bought an F82 M4 that fell into my lap. This review kind of resonated with me. Cool noises somewhere far in the trunk, undeniably fast, amazing brakes, meh shift feel, and an unnecessarily heavy steering effort that doesn't communicate which I find the weirdest coming from a manual steering rack MR2. I figured the ultimate driving moniker might have been from days past. It's what I imagine driving a Mustang might feel like, though I suspect the Mustang might feel better (for me). I was looking at the m235i/m240i after seeing how fun they looked at TC America, but I'm slightly skeptical of modern BMWs. If it's not engaging and fun I don't want to go fast and I don't need that much power, and if I don't want to go fast and it's got that much room I might as well have 4 doors. I've found myself going 15 mph faster unknowingly on streets that I'm always on. I traded it with the girlfriend to drive her ND Miata around and outside of practicality it's not even close (outside of braking -those things are my favorite part of the car). It's a strange car to me. Two weeks in and I'm ready to car shopping. I was slightly hopeful to test an e89, but perhaps it's not a BMW thing and it's just a modern thing. lol

As an older gentleman, I don't want to rapp out the engine or row any gears. I like turbo motors and their mid-range torque. I don't need to scare the neighborhood by revving out to 9k and banging gears. So for me the BMW is better and being new, that gives me peace of mind.

Great perspective for comparison. Maintenance cost is a wild card outside of warranty but otherwise performce cars of past ~15 years ago are plenty for public roads or even non-competitive track days. Any non-wrecked performance/sportscar sice 2002 is a candidate for second sporty car in your garage.

Not my garage. And anyone looking at a used sports car, will for all intents and purposes, trying to make it work for their budget and any comprehensive work will bankrupt them. ON the flips side, if they can afford a used Porsche and the maintenance, they are likely able to purchase it new, making this comparison rather moot. Not many will want to gamble on a sports car that's been abused by someone else. And garage queens will not be cheap.

A lot of things came to my mind while watching this video. One of them is the "old vs new" hit me really hard. I've driven a few modern cars - nothing like Porsches or BMWs) and every single time I drive a car made in the last five years, I miss my old '95 Honda Accord Wagon. Like the Porsche in comparison to the BMW in this video, it loses in technology, but I have never EVER felt so comfortable and felt so much pleasure driving a (ordinary) car. I'd buy many Accord Wagons like the one I used to have with the money of a new car, rather than getting a new one. And the second main thing that crossed my mind was this: much more than I envy you guys for being able to drive such cool cars, I envy you for the roads you drive on. Here, right in the middle of Brazil, everything is very straight, so you have to do insane speeds to have fun on wheels. Thank you for yet another excellent video!

This is why I love my IS 500, it's not nearly as analog, but it has just enough elements to make me feel connected and enjoy the drive.

The average 991.1 C4S on the market right now is an 80k+ car all day long... not really a fair comparison but good video. I think a base carrera or carrera 4 would be around that price.

Thank you for this. Now that my boys are teens, the oldest will get my 335i M Sport when he turns 16 next year. I can go back to a coupe again. I was in between the first M2, or a 997.2. Both are under $50k, and available in manual. I like the M2 base because I’m used to the N55 from my 335i, which has been pretty reliable. Knock on wood. I’ve always wanted a 997 or a 991 because they are still pretty small compared to the 992. The 992 is great, but they have that squashed look like the Camaros do. I prefer the more upright 911. Anyway, I’m waiting for prices to settle again. Right now, used car prices have been around 20% higher than normal.

The size and weight increase is what made me go from my E46 M3 to a 911 (manual of course). The feel isn’t even close. If I stuck with BMW, it would have had to have been an E9X M3. FYI, if you want more of a “drivers car” get a 2S and manual, but you know this.

I understand your point very well guy's I own already two porsche in my life, but I buy the M240i xDrive hands down this time... Why? Full cover warranty, free maintenance service for 4 years BMW paid the bill and also it need a real skills driver to perform well that BMW car on a road race track, the only thing you need is a nice set of Cup 2R tires and big balls in your pants. This BMW is so nice, powerful, affordable and my head is clear about any problem the car could have, because the warranty is there for me! Pay $15K more for a ten years car and freaking out about the expensive Porsche service and maintenance all the time... No way sir, I pass on this one my friends! I love my M240i and I enjoy every second with it.

Excellent video, as always, though pitting a second-hand E92 M3 vs the 4S makes more sense to me - here the ~$40k US BMW takes the 4S down, for less money. All said, great notes on perks of old vs new, and oh why oh why did BMW lose its magic of yesteryear; too much weight, no feel, and (especially now with the iPad dash) too much tech. Keep a driver’s car what it is. Hopes that a 1 series returns!

Bit of a silly comparison, but nice try guys. The M240i starts at $48k. You absolutely don't need to option it out to close to $60k to enjoy the car. I also have doubts that $60k will get you a good 2013 911. Emphasis on good. I have no doubts some are listed at that price, probably by shady second hand dealers. But you know the saying, if something seems too good to be true... In the end, I choose the BMW. I rather give up a bit of steering feel and badge prestige in favour of a warranty, newer tech, and a very reliable and tuneable B58 engine.

Another gem. The video, not so much the Beamer. As someone whose 2nd car back in the '70's was a BMW 1600, and who has test driven- not owned thank goodness- numerous BMW models since, something has been lost. Of course as good as the PDK is, I could not bring myself to buy a Porsche without three pedals. Wonder if you could get a great driver's car that you can daily, for just over half what this 10 year old teutonic icon costs? Something weighing even less than the 911, and way, way less than the M240i. Yet with a real rear seat and storage? That was fast, grippy, with first rate brakes, adaptive dampers, rarer then either of these two vehicles, and yet easier to maintain? With a six speed manual? Nah, that car doesn't exist, but it would be cool. Excuse me while I go jump in my FK8.

I was looking at the 911 991.1 a few months ago in Colorado and nation wide. it was hard to find one for less than 85K with virtually no normal options like you would find in a POS Hyundai..... bringing me to buy a brand new M4 Xdrive.... I just did another search and found that the price for a 991.1 is about 80K - 69K. The NEW BMW is a no brainer for me, more options and performance and its a car that isn't 9-10 years old. I love Porsches but damn the price on a new one is out of this world and the used market is stupid. The Porsche needs a specific buyer I want to be one but I guess I just can't afford to play.

Can echo the sentiment about BMW lacking driving feel but doing so many things well. Currently own a 2016 M235i and it's sneakily quick, especially in Sport+ mode and the steering tightens up quite a bit. Compared to my 2016 Ford Focus RS, however, the driving feel is night and day. That car was FUN, responsive steering (compared to BMW) and inspired so much confidence that I never felt in danger in high speed corners. The problem was that is was quite possibly the most uncomfortable car I'd ever owned. I owned a '14 Focus ST and a '08 WRX before the RS and those were infinitely more comfortable than the RS, however, the RS could do things that no $40k (at the time) car could do.

I was configuring the 2 series for ordering and realized that BMW has stopped offering the M-Sport version and dynamic handling package for the 2023 230i coupe, which was offered till September 2022. This is Pushing me to either get an M240i RWD, new for 2023, that has all of the above that I want, for $7000 more or get a 330i with M-sport and dynamic handling package for $5000 more. It is a shame because 230i M-Sport with DHP was the best “lightweight” backroads carver in the entire BMW line till last month. Do I really want an overweight 3 series? Or do I want to pay $7K more for an overpowered 382hp, for which I really do not care? I am an actual customer, and BMW will probably lose me on this one.

I had a 991.1 previously and had several mechanical issues but honestly I think all German luxury/sports cars maintenance costs are exorbitant. I think everyone who first drives the 911 says “it’s engaging” simply due to physics. You sit very low to the ground and the perception of speed since the ground seems to be moving faster, even at 60mph you feel like you’re doing 80, you get the sensation of “fast.” And yes I tried M2/3/4/8 and they drive pretty numb and clinically. Just my thoughts 😊
