Lot's of leased Lexus out there. BMW's are not "leased because of reliability". They are leased because people don't keep cars forever these days. That's something that kids have in their heads. The BMW is the more fun to drive, therefore I have the M4 and not the RCF....period. That was the only thing that went into my buying decision. Which car would I rather drive? That was the question. I'm not going to pass up pleasure for some reliability myth that will never come into play.

Most tests against M4/ RCF result in pretty close times for lap times , and to be quite honest i personally wouldn't be buying an M4 or RCF for trackdays . 15-20mm lower ride height, 10mm spacers all round, anti-roll bars across the strut towers and rear links, shed some weight and bosh.. RC F would be an amazing car. It's an entry level super sport that is made to be driven daily..or modified. Toyota did this with the GT86 & other performance models as well.

Seems to me he was expecting a track car, but the RCF isn't really meant for the track. It shines as a daily driver with just enough to have a bit of fun on the back roads. The LC500 is more of a successor to the SC430; not really meant for track but for cruising. The standard RCF isn't built for the track. It's a far more comfortable and better daily driver than the M4. I've owned both, I would know. Clarkson's entire opinion is based on 'what's the best track car'. Most people go to the track barely, if ever. The RCF is the one of the best budget grand tourers out there. Trust me. Unlike other brands, Lexus's engine is reliable, which means they get less money from customers going in to get it serviced. That's why they can't afford to make project cars that cost more to produce than it does to sell. I'd rather have a brand that sells great daily drivers than a brand that sells sports cars that break down easily so they can make more money fixing it back up.

That LFA is magic versus the RCF tbh. I love the RCF for the reliability ratings, but it ain't as fun as BMW M cars when it comes to performance. Even if the BMW were a little more expensive to keep around, the BMW would still win my heart. If Lexus ever made a car like LFA or as fun to drive as a BMW, I wouldn't mind driving it for a week.

The problem is the RC-F was never meant to be a sports car. Unlike the LF-A which is at home on a racetrack, the RC-F is meant for the country club parking lot. Lexus could have made it small and light and used aluminium everywhere, but they didn't, on purpose, to make it squidgy and comfortable like an old audi.

Technically the ppl who made LFA did not make the RC F since it was a different crew and plus long driving in the Lexus is like travelling in a cloud when compared to the M4's thin and uncomfortable seats . So Lexus has made a good, RELIABLE and comfortable car that has power. Hence why the RC F is just better as a CAR than the M4. The End !

i think clarkson just dislikes lexus and it's a biased review, unlike any other reviewer clarkson gives this car more grief than he should and at 1:21 when he says he's in expert mod and takes the piss, you hear the car go up a gear which in that mode requires your to manually change gears, which he doesn't..honestly as well, not even the stage can make an M4 launch in the rain without spinning the rear wheels,which in this case, somehow didn't

The Lexus RCF is lighter, faster, cheaper upfront AND in the long run, more agile, arguably better looking, and has far far superior reliability and has v8 5.0 engine. !!!

rc f isn't lighter, but I do agree it is better looking / more reliable and will hold its value better in the long run. Look at the IS F and M3. reliability is huge and most car journalists never mention it.

It's not lighter, it's not faster, and is terrible in the corners. The reliability argument is the only one you can make with a straight face, and even that is conjecture based on manufacturer track record.

If talking about just sound, absolutely not. Trust me, I'm coming from an E92 M3 with the full Dinan intake, x-pipe and catback exhaust shebang (i.e. 4 resonators and no cats on two basically straight pipes). The sound was glorious and I miss it still. When the M4 first came out, I ridiculed the sound along with everyone else, and it still will never sound as good as a V8. That said, it has improved greatly. The competition package (which changes the exhaust and also basically removes the active sound component), with some downpipes and some of the coding options from the GTS (start-up roar, overrun burble), gives the car its own unique character. It's a snarling, vicious, nasty beast compared to the sonorous S65B40 valkyrie it replaced. So the argument boils down to "it's reliable and has a V8". If I wanted that, I can always just get another E92 M3 (didn't have a single mechanical issue on my last one, and all the weakpoints like throttle actuators and rod bearings have already been identified and addressed via easy DIY), which will not be quite as fast in a straight line or have the creature comforts, but will be far more connected and equally emotive, as well as far away superior in track conditions. Hell, who am I kidding, I'll probably pick up another one without nav in a few years and just strip it out to be used as a track toy only. Love that car. Anyway, I digress... If aiming for the all-around car that can be a great kid/grocery hauler, a daily driver, and the occasional autocross/track toy, it's hard to beat the M3/4 series cars. If you don't care at all about the latter, the Lexus would probably be a good choice especially since it's cheaper. If I wanted a luxury touring coupe though, I am more enticed by the upcoming LC500, which looks to be a more luxurious and far more affordable alternative to AMGs/M6s.
