In this video I want discuss with you guys what went wrong with this S63TU engine and what could be done to avoid the so dreaded catastrophic failure.
This engine is out of a 2013 BMW F10 M5 and had traveled 100.000kms before it seized. It was on a stage 2 map producing around 700HP according to the owners.
Stay tuned for episode number 2 where I will update you guys with a plan on exactly how we are going to proceed with this engine rebuild.
If you are unaware of the twin turbo V8 BMWs, the S63 and the N63 are pretty much the same engines with a few different components such as turbos, manifolds, cams - the assembly and dismantling of these engine are the same.

Agree, it also goes to show why it pays of to take these cars to a shop who understand them. After all the owner paid $9k for new lifters and seals on bank 2 when the initial problem was actually a bent rod, causing the ticking noise.

This was rather interesting because you found chunks in the block and a massive piece in the combustion chamber. I am not sure about fin density of the intercooler on these things but usually it is not large enough to allow plastic bags to go through. I also dont know how RH bank has plastic bits in the cylinder head meanwhile LH bank has chunks in the combustion chamber. Never felt more puzzled about a blown engine before 😂

The main difference on cylinder heads N63 S63 and S68 is the eccentric camshaft, there is 2 different types of exhaust valves which s63 uses both of them it depends the variant and the other difference is the spark plugs. On the opposite side of the vvt motor is the cylinder head identification numbers the first 2 digits 34or23 is where the head manufactured inside bmw or contractor and the 4after is the production date of the head !Follow to see the way u gonna assembly the intake springs without special tools!

@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 6 ай бұрын
Hi, I use full Synthetic 5w40 or you could also use 5w30 - my recommendation is that you stick with the oil specs BMW requires. Many people suggest you should use different oil but I completely disagree. If you had the bearings done you are well aware of the potential issues of trashing the car while the engine is still cold 🤣

Is there no warning sensor regards to the oil throughput\pressure ? I guess one would not factor out sabotage of that engine with that amount of junk in the top of the block ?

There is definitely a pressure sensor on the S63 / N63 engines however I believed it wasn't triggered or the person driving the car failed to realise the light was on.

Nice tear down, yes something has definitely gone through the engine, but for that much hard plastic material in there im wondering if its come from the engine itself , something like chain guides or breather system or intake runners(does the engine have variable intake sleves runners?-im unfamiliar with this engine ,i have an E60 n62 & E39 m54) its just strange no turbo damage with so much hard plastic on top of piston, also the piston with the large plastic deposit on top how is the valves for that cylinder does it have evidence of this plastic..... anyway just a few thoughts i was having, but once again great video (i only came across it by accident)keep up the good work im a new follower also based here in Australia.
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 6 ай бұрын
Hi Peter, yes plenty of mysterious plastic bits inside and out of this engine. Definitely not from the intake as they are both intact and with this engine having inter coolers anything coming from the outside would get trapped on them if not in the air filter. Thanks for watching !
@samppazzz
@samppazzz 6 ай бұрын
I think that maybe it was liquid form first, and heat and pressure make it hard and plastic. Maybe it was something for oil lines and when it got thru the pcv or similar syclone system, then it past the intake valve and top of the piston, becouse breathing. That way no Air filter and intercooler done nothing to filter it out.

Contrary to popular belief, and depending on how scratched that cylinder is, one can hone an Alusil block. It takes some special stones and techniques, but it is much preferred over sleeving.
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately very few places worldwide can do that sort of job and nobody in Australia - the good thing about sleeving the block is that cast iron sleeves will support much more boost so your engine actually becomes stronger, which is preferred if you’re considering pushing the power levels to the limit

I find that hard to believe, this stuff was clearly in a liquefied form. Dunno if RTV even can get that way, but it would take over 400F to get there, which the oil is not going to be at. You should get one of those pieces of plastic analyzed to find out what it is. Only the PCV system should go to both the oil and combustion chamber. For the earlier models (N63 and N63TU the main difference when compared to the S63 would be the pistons (creating a different compression ratio) , exhaust manifolds, turbos, cams and the software the engine runs on.

What a shame. The cleanliness indicates the oil services were not as infrequent as the mfr. schedule. Absent a plastic bag going where it did not belong, this engine would have a lengthy life.

Unrelated rant: I still wish bmw would do a simple v8 with supercharger like the dead reliable hellcat and old amg motors. Every bmw m engine has had serious mechanical problems and it’s honestly not acceptable. They always overcomplicate their engine designs then have multiple later versions to fix issues. N54, N63, etc. They could really eliminate v8 engines and just run the turbo 6 in 5 series with similar power levels because bmw does 6 cylinders best.
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 6 ай бұрын
The V8s are beautiful engines, their main issue however is that people would still rely on the BMWs suggested 15k kms oil change interval and although it will be fine for the first 100k kms the engines are set to fail after that - ano the bright side, most of the issues can be rectified before the engine blows up but the majority of people who buy these cars at over 100k kms just rely on hope 🤣
