BMW M6 (E24) - Fast Blast Review - Everyday Driver

In our continued Fast Blast series, the guys climb into a beautiful example of the classic 80s M6. This rare 1987 example was recently reconditioned by Luxe Auto Spa and owner Mark but maintains a stock configuration.. So with time on a favorite high-mountain road, the guys set out to see how this icon drives by today's standards.

I feel like bmw and alfa are on pretty much the same route with making their cars beautiful over the years. Something about the lights and the grill complimenting the look of the rest of the car

Sloppy BMW shifters are a result of a worn shifter cup and bushings in the shift rod. It's an easy $100 fix to make it firm and tight and will be just fine for probably the lifetime of the car.

Bimmer Benz - This is a new series of videos for us, and the entire idea of the "Fast Blast" is to drive and review the car in the exact form it was given to us. Though we know any privately owned car could be set up differently, or have things changed out - we can't theorize what that would/could/might/should feel like. Sometimes these fast blast cars have been tuned, or are being tuned, or are set up improperly. In the small amount of time we have these cars we can only discuss what it actually drives like in the current set-up and the way the owner uses and enjoys the car. A fully refreshed M6 would no doubt feel different. We hope that clarifies a bit, and we appreciate you watching and commenting.

But, the same is true of new BMWs with high mileage, so to state, as these fellows do, that it is a result of old technology exposes an unacceptable level of ignorance for persons presuming to provide reviews for public consumption. Any contemporary manual F series BMW with 101K will have just as much slop in the shifter, because the technology is exactly the same and the linkage is actually interchangeable! The Getrag 280 gearbox, which the M6 uses, is slightly notchy, because it is over-engineered for the 3.5 application, being rated at over 500 ft lbs of torque. Again it has nothing to do with the age of the technology. I wish the testers well, but they need to be able to put wear into context, and that only comes from experience and greater objectivity.

+EverydayDriver The steering box of the e24 allows for periodic adjustment to reduce that on-center play. Pity you didn't have a screw driver (standard) handy. No "refresh" required.

On the old 6 series, I've always loved the unapologetic off center exhaust. Something about it just says "I'm better than you, and you'll have to get over it."

I believe they are referring to the numerous side and offset impact standards as well as side curtain SRS requirements. Some manufacturers overcome this a lot better than others, but it's probably currently impossible with today's materials and technology to meet safety standards and still have such a delicate and graceful greenhouse as the E24. Those twee little B-pillars and fragile looking A pillars are gorgeous but probably useless in a collision.

Most of your impressions of the feel were the result of 29yo solid rubber bushings (shift linkage bushings, steering rack bushings, suspension bushing) that were not so compliant when new. Please beg Mark to replace all the old rubber bits with new OEM stuff and let you guys borrow it again. I think you'll be shocked at how confidence inspiring an old BMW can be.

I had a 635CSI 25 years ago, it would have been an 8 year old car back then with 100k miles but I remember it drove so well, it was the 4 speed sports auto but it flew through the bends at insane speeds that I'd struggle to do with the latest M6 that I currently drive. I spent my life sideways in that old car, it was so controllable and so precise even as an auto but what a machine! :)

Theses 80's BMWs are timeless classics. I have an 82 735i Euro spec. and a 2013 528i, but my favorite and the one u drive the most frequently is the old 735i. I have gone through all of the suspension bushings and shifter linkage and it drives very solid. I just love it, because there is no other car like it.

My dad bought a black 87 M6 in 1989 with 12k miles at a repo auction. It was incredible to drive. No slop in shifter, and it WAS a driver's car! White Leather. He sent me once on a business trip for him from Columbus to Chicago and I drove all night. For a while I had the cruise set at just over 140mph. Stupid now that I look back. But the car was so strong! 256 horses felt like 400 horses! There was just a feeling to the car like it had a soul. My dad is 84 years old now and he just bought a new Audi S6 V8T Quattro! LOL

or any modern car for that matter. I drive 95 golf estate, and i can park that thing anywere, no parking assist. when i get in a modern car its like driving a tank, you cant see anything around. no wonder they need all the parking gizmos and cameras for backing up.

I have owned a 1987 M6 since 1992. The shifter does not have any slop and it steers most precisely. I also have 2001 E55 and that car does have me wondering if it will have traction through curves before it digs in . My M6 always is confidence inspiring and a simple twitch of steering wheel brings it back in line without drama if I let the rear out. I think the one they test drove need steering and shifter bushings as previous reader wrote. Mine is all stock except for new rims and tires and a Dinan chip which really brings the engine to life with another 38 hp and same amount of torque increase.. The seats are fantastic..I do not understand these guys driving this car and their not understanding nor appreciating its virtues.

I had the Tester's model too! This shark is my favorite BMW (and I have owned several BMWs). This is the one that started it all. I still have the sales brochure in a comic book sleeve. I bought a 560SEC when I wanted my big coupe ONLY because, in the days before the Internet, I couldn't find an E24 that hadn't been thrashed to pieces. Love this car. One of my grails. Kudos on a beautiful shark.

I used to sneak my stepfather's L6 when he went on vacation. It was light blue metallic with the same parchment interior. I loved that car so much I went and got my own 2006 version when I was able to afford it. BMW makes the best grand touring cars.

This is my absolute favorite BMW. I think that BMW should make an entry level retro-styled car with design language harping back to the 80's. It would have round headlights, boxy proportions, and driving characteristics centered around driver involvement. BMW has been making dozens of cross-overs lately, it would be cool if they made something different, such as this.

TOP video... I just love this gen (E24). Always seeking for 635csi videos and adds in the used car market, but this overly exclusive M6 is even better. It is just amazing. I am starting to change my mind about the 80's in many ways. There were a lot of good things after all, and this is clearly one of them! I will watch it again just because... :D

My 88 M6 (June 87 production) is tight tight tight... steering, shifter, and everything else. So FUN to drive, and it gets up and GOs! (Granted, the original SB38B35 has been rebuilt to be a SB38B38 as was in the later "fastest car on the planet" M5). My uncle was the original owner, and it was his "only child". He put a LOT into it, and it's an awesome vehicle... looks and performance. At least these guys nailed the looks part! :-) Oh, and mine's the same Cinnabar Red. Love it.

I drove one of these back in 1987 as a 17 year old. My parents were having a party and needed more ice. Their friend's M6 was at the end of the driveway and I was tossed the keys. Picked up a friend down the street and we blasted into town for some bags of ice. First time I hit 100mph in a car. I had no idea how rare these are, but I knew it was a special car from the beginning.

I hate to break the news to you guys who are quick to say "wasn't bred or meant to be a track car" but the E24 was a DIRECT result of a crisis in racing at the time and in order for BMW to compete in a certain class of racing, they had to back their "race" car up with a production model. Hence the E24 6 series Coupe. It's BIGGER brother, that consequently never made it to the track, at least at that time was the beautiful BMW M1. It's the ONLY BMW that has been assigned 2 Roundels on its rear. That was because the engineers and designers wanted EVERYONE to NOT mistaken it for any other exotic breed. I.e. Ferrari, Lamborghini etc. My 2 cents.....Research before you criticize. I did before I bought my 85 E24.

Always like the reviews from you guys. Honest feedback and I like the juxtaposition between the two of you. After watching a few of these Fast Blasts, just some personal fan feedback: just enjoy the cars and let us enjoy them too. A proud owner lets you drive their car. Show just a tad bit of respect and dare I say, restraint when criticizing it. A 1987 M6 is a rare thing of beauty but throughout the entire review, you utter passive aggressive dismissals of the car because it's...old? Suggestion: drive the car, remind us of the glory of the car back then, what made it special then and now, and for god's sake, make the owner (and others who might want to participate) feel great that you love their car just as much as they do. New car reviews, bash the shit out of them. Fans rides, save the heavy criticism for off camera, but let us (and them) have their moment. And might I just give some very succinct commentary? This: "I mean, a huge thanks to Mark for letting us drive it. It is a lot of fun to drive; it's a real experience, but it's not a great drivers car." It doesn't get any more obtuse than that. To end the review on a low like that was in poor taste. Please, I love the series. I'm liking the new direction, but don't do this again.

New or old, we never set out to bash anything, but always give a straightforward assessment of both the good and the bad. Mark, the owner of this M6, enjoyed this review and even told us he felt we overlooked a few things that aren't right on his M6 (things un-mentioned because they are being fixed or are broken because of the cars age). If a car is set-up improperly or not as good as the audience might expect, we want to mention because we believe you, the audience, would notice them if you drove the car. Others have commented that they appreciate us still bringing our same style to older cars and pointing out the good and bad. We hope it will be helpful for those who might consider buying one instead of a newer car. EverydayDriver Agree to an extent, but.... at the same time, when complaining about things like steering feel and the shifter, it would be nice in the wrap up to say something like..." A huge thanks to Mark for letting us drive it. It is a lot of fun to drive; it's a real experience, there are just a few things that need to be sorted out to make it a great driver's car - the steering and the shifter would benefit from readily available bits from vendors like Bavarian Auto, etc. A car this good and the owner deserve to have these things sorted". I'm glad you guys enjoyed driving "Mark's" 28-year old (now 30) M6. However, your observations were based on the condition of this particular car. Some of its appearance details plus your remarks on its handling makes this "6" owner wonder about your review-car maintenance record and I don't mean regular oil changes. Rather, I am referring to the more involved component service and/or replacement that Americans, even wealthy ones, are famous for neglecting. In your video, one simply tipoff is the condition of Mark's M6 hood and trunk emblems - any BMW enthusiast replaces tired ones. So, if an inexpensive easy-to-fix emblem replacement hasn't been done, one can expect this M6's suspension bushings, et al, haven't been replaced as well - quite possibly the dampers need changing as well. In addition, as observed by other commenters, the manual shifter bushings are likely worn out. This probably applies to the steering as well. Remember though, the steering responds differently because the e24/e28 steering design did not employ rack & pinion. Finally, it's true the M6's power is half of what a new Mustang V8 offers so maybe also consider a vintage M6 against other sport coupes from the era. Your two-driver review is enthusiastic and engaging. I suggest you do another one, this time with a properly restored e24 M6.

It's not much, that is the US numbers for it.... the European numbers are 282 BHP, remember all engines were de tuned for the USA at the time..... Mercedes brought out the 560 V8 to compensate for the 500 being de tuned in the USA....

A minor correction, They keep referring to the Steering Rack... the E24 still use a recirculating ball type steering box. I had a 1985 635CSi and the steering didn't have the play/looseness being referenced here. I think this M6 needs some maintenance!

Once you get one of these over 8 /10ths on a back road or on a track it shows you an entirely new personality and suite of talents. This is a great review but that did not happen here for understandable reasons. Unlike like modern M cars where you hit a button to change personalities the e24 M6 and all early M car were amazing comfortable grand tourers but when you focused and got on them hard they did magical things most sports cars of the time could not pull off. That is part of what made the early M cars so special and unique and how they created a entirely new segment .

If you gotta haul 4 people around, 4 doors are nice. If you just want the ultimate in style, 6 series for you. I thought hard about picking up an e24 after I sold my e30. It is a timeless looking car. Second and third what the others say about the shifter. I rebuilt the one on the e30, and it felt great. Parts are cheap but it was a hassle.

DJ MotoVlogs Yes, that is a rear A/C unit, but most probably don't get used much as those back seats are pretty cramped!

DJ MotoVlogs I have a '88 635csi with the rear A/C, the vents can be rotated to face either the front or rear passengers - its nice to have plenty of A/C vents especially since the cabin is basically a greenhouse

There's no denying it. Something magical happened in the 80's. It's not just that their hair was more buoyant, their choruses catchier, their spandex tighter and their glutes perkier. It's that now they're all in their sixties, and their hair is still buoyant, their choruses are still catchy, their spandex is still tight, and their glutes are still perky. And whatever they've been taking, the M6 has been taking twice the dose.

That one looks pretty nice, but it doesn't seem to be the greatest example of an M6 to be honest, since the steering and shifter are usually far better on these. Tight and responsive steering is one of the things these cars are known for, and given that it seems like some modifications have been done to the suspension it is possible those mods weren't exactly... done well. Good video though, I realize that you guys have to base your thoughts on the example you had the chance to drive, and obviously even the most serious car junkie isn't going to be 100% familiar with how every car ever is suppose to operate, and with cars of this age experiences are going to vary. Keep up the good work! Love this series.
