Hi. Another good video. My N47 engine, E60/ 5 series crank pulley is all cracked (121.000 miles). I'll get it changed next weekend. Waiting for autodoc to deliver the parts. Corteco crank pulley + Gates belt kit. Removing the crank bolts with impact tool is the best tip. Otherwise you have to buy a special tool which costs £80 or you can ruin your timing chain if you spin the crankshaft the other way. Thank you George. Keep it like that.

Doing the same job tomorrow, pulley totally failed at 270k km. One thing tho, you can get a Gates 'micro-v kit' with the tensioners and belt, wich will save you about 35euros. 👍 Superb video and job, thank you !

For pulleys I only use INA components, the crank pulley I use only corteco on BMWs (since they make the oem one and the part number got revised). For belts only continental, never had a problem with these brands.

@@GeorgeAusters Yep. Didn't recognize symptoms, just high pitched rawl when revving engine. And that I guessed to be a bearing somewhere. And it actually was a tensioner bearing. But recalling back, I did have exessive engine shake. But not too bad to be honest. Symptoms sneaked up so slowly that I didn't notice it early enough. I just changed all and it was about 20min job. Than you for superb video! Had to do it in the open in field so all tool sizes, torques etc. were nice to have! Straight forward job.

On an 'after' video engine is almost stand still, no shaking comparing to 'before'. I am thinking this is either because engine was warm, or an old crank pulley was in such a bad condition that it transferred a lot of vibration.

Hi Phil, I just did my today and had the problem of crankshaft rotating when tighting the torque to 120 deg. So used a impact wrench with offset bolt/socket to slowly tighten the bolts by 120 deg. No rotation of crankshaft and made the job so much easier. No locking tools required.

@bevis71

4:33 Yes... 118d/E87 if you don't have Chinese hands - remove fan. 1x screw on the side/top of fan assembly (driver side in UK), 1x electrical plug to unplug right on the top (you cannot miss it), then on the passenger side there's a clip/latch holding fan to radiator just about half way between top and bottom - just hold it with one finger then pull fan assembly UP - difficulty level 0. Oh.... and to do that all you have to take out air filter box as it's blocking access to the screw... 2x10mm socket for the box and 1x flat screw to release the pipe. Total time spend for disassembly airbox+fan+crankshaft pulley - 30minutes. Replacement should come tomorrow so still not sure how long reassembly will take! PEACE
@bevis71
@bevis71 Жыл бұрын
Update: Reasembly - same +/- 30min ;). Only difficulty is putting a belt back on when you're alone. Gearbox on neutral + belt on all wheels apart from alternator - easiest to access as on the top - tensioner FULL clockwise then wigle the belt on the alternator pulley - yes it's tight but twist pulley left/right on repeat and it will pop back where it was.

Fitted my new awkward coolant flange/pipe and only had to raise the manifold inlet 4 inches to get at the hidden hex screw so left injectors etc connected. Couldn’t believe how clean the ports are inside as only a fine oily layer present with no coke build up at all, I only do long journeys in the main so that could be the reason it’s stayed clean! Hi george, great channel wondering if you can help me with diagnosing a whining noise. When i remove the belt the noise goes away, so deffo pulley related, i have changed the alternator but noise is still there. Rest of the pulleys are smooth. The noise i can best describe is like when you have an electric interferince with a radio, but mines in the belt area. What do recommend to check of replace. My car also has the electric rack

Question are serpentine belt and drive by the same things? And when engine gets running why do you need crankshaft pulley if crankshaft is making power by itself or is crankshaft moving the belt to power like altenetor and so?

Hey George. Great information in your videos. Had my crankshaft pulley replaced about a week ago and now I have noticed oil leaking behind the pulley. Could this have been caused by the new pulley being fitted or is the oil seal known to fail. Just seems coincidental? Cheers

Use the torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 40 torque, then put a offset angle socket with impact wrench to slowly further tighter the bolts by 120 degrees. Many thanks George for your video, really helped my replace the pulley on my car today.

Is it worth getting the newer model 2013 onwards or are these worth taking a chance on? Was the 2.0 diesel unit changed for 2013? Great video as always George 👍 I used this to refer to when doing my crank pulley at the weekend, very helpful. Does the orientation of the 2 cutouts on the outer rim of the metal centre matter when fitting the new part? After replacing mine I realised they were at a different orientation to the old part and forgot to check before torquing the bolts up. Can't see a reason why it would matter personally, but always best to check I guess

Hey George, does a bad/failing crankshaft pulley cause vibration at idle which smooths out at higher engine RPM? My N47 has done 137,000 KM (85,000 miles). I have vibration when idling and it’s silky smooth when I increase engine RPM, doesn’t matter what gear I’m in. I have replaced the engine mounts which improved it a little, we checked the transmission mounts which look good too. If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate hearing them.
