I guess the 81 was implemented mid ‘08 and the 80 prior to this had problems with mosfets with upgraded coils. Just curious if you’ve had any problems with your DME if you have the 80. Thanks man!

Nice work Jake! I just finally posted up my version of this DIY in 4K on my channel. One interesting thing to note is that the BMW workshop manual specifies a flexible extension or universal should be used with the spark plug socket to prevent potential insulator damage. In the real world it's not really necessary if you're experienced like you and I, but thought it was worth mentioning in the DIY for others.

Just did mine. Had a cylinder 3 misfire, swapped coils with #2 and the misfire followed. There was definitely some quirks to this job. That strut tower brace was really in the way so I had to move mine. Most importantly though the stupid plug socket I got from ECS wouldn’t fit any of my extensions. So I had to literally hammer one In and now that’s my permanent BMW plug extension. Also, I was also surprised that the coil tubes were at a slight angle to the plugs. The socket and extension don’t go perfectly straight in. I also had a scare with #6 - plug was WAY too tight. That’s what you get with a mystery used car though I guess. I’m an old school shade tree diy guy, haven’t messed with older cars in a long time though, 20 years? Was surprised that anti seize was NOT recommended. Back in my day in the 1900s anti seize was a must. Parts store guy had never even heard of it. Glad I googled it.

I bought NGK 1 step colder plugs because it was time to change my stock plugs out (no misfires on stock plugs), I gapped them to .0275 (Factory gap), do you think I should have gapped them to .022 (high boost application). Car runs great with factory gap, just wonder if I would get a little extra power with the smaller gap.

I’ve been very interested in getting a N54 135i for awhile, if I’m buying one with or without some basic bolt on’s- what’s a good number to budget for at the beginning for maintenance to keep the car healthy? $1500-2000? Such as the coils, plugs, etc
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
Are you doing the labor yourself? If so, you'll save a lot of money. I would budget ~$500 for oil change, spark plugs, ignition coils, and walnut blast parts. ~$1500 for NEW injectors if needed. ~$500 for water pump and thermostat if it has never been done, do it when it dies. Turbos could be fine, but if they take a crap, you can get stock replacements for cheap or upgraded ones for a couple thousand dollars. A few hundred bucks here and there for gaskets, etc. Oil filter housing, valve cover, oil pan gasket, etc.
@joeys3580
@joeys3580 5 жыл бұрын
Jake Spence thanks for the reply! Yes I plan on doing the work myself. I’ve had an e46 and e36 m3, and am looking for a more modern car with some straight line speed. That’s a good answer. Are there enough resources to know what needs to be replaced when the car misfires, throws a code, etc? After doing these maintenance items over the course of 6 months or so.

I'm FBO MHD2+ (DP, 5 inch stepped intercooler, DCI, Inlets, Charge Pipe) Index 12 injectors, new stock Bosche coils and Spark plugs. I'm getting misfires and cylinder deactivation when I give it more than half throttle. Is this because I need colder Spark plugs? The online guide suggests the -1 colder NGK plugs for FBO, but Jake seems to be suggesting -2 for what looks to be a similar build?
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
You can do 1 step colder or 2 step colder. I went with 2 step colder because the 1 step colder plugs were out of stock everywhere. I can't say for sure that you're getting misfires because you need colder spark plugs, but it's worth bringing your ignition system up to par.

Jake, not to be offensive but you need to read, understand & comment on dimensions such as the “Feeler Gauges” you were using in this video. You stated you were using a “200 thousandths gage” when in fact you had a “20 thousandths gage”. I am a professional inspector and have inspected parts for cars, trucks, military vehicles and components on the international space station so I have some history in this. Think of it this way, a human hair is approximately “4 thousandths of an inch (0.004)”; an 1/8 of an inch is 0.125; a quarter of an inch (1/4”) is 0.250 or called out as 250 thousandths. You mentioned 200 thousandths which is 10 times bigger than you wanted. Hope that helps you as you have helped me to work on my sons car.
