The coolant pipe applies to certain BMW N62 engines. It applies to 2004-2006 BMW X5 4.4i and 4.8is (E53) as well as the 2007-2010 BMW X5 4.8i (E70).

Great innovation! Porsche and BMW basically design great mechanical engines.As great as they are as you can see they do have design flaws which cost us a great deal of time,money and aggravation.Nice to see some great mechanics who are committed to finding solutions to these issues. firstly really great solution but, its in an area thats under constant vibration would the threads not loosen over time if they are not locked in some way , i work in maintenancein a pharmaceutical plant and we couldnt used something like that because in an area under vibration the threads would work loose over time and leak ??????

BMW650I 2007, the coolant leakage been for months, All hoses, reservoir were replaced. Still small leakage still dripping. Recently I had the coolant checked. Thermostat, water pump and plastic tensor were replaced after modifications to the under take. The mechanic had pipe slightly smaller than the under take as cost would have been much higher. So the mechanic inserted the slightly smaller into existing Allamium under take with permanent glue. SO far the coolant leakage has stopped. He told me to use the car for 2 weeks in order to make sure no leakage before changing the coolant. The garage added more water temporarily in order for the car to be drive. IF the modification doesn’t work? Then he will need to replace the under take which will cost much more. SO far the cost for the parts and workmanship $300. The leakage seems to stop since 3 days ago. Based on the car value! It’s not worth spending large amount when the value is very low. SO far so good. SO my advise to owners of old BMW not to spend large amounts when you can spend much less. BMW650I are such a wonderful cars on the road BUT it’s costly to maintain. Eventually I will need to replace the whole engine with used one at a cost of $1200 available in the market same goes for the transmission. Hope my experience would help others. Now that you have increase the pressure tollerance of the center pipe, be ready for the rear bell housing coolant pan to blow. To prevent all these problems including the center pipe 1) change your coolant with Pentosin NF or Motul Inugel Expert Ultra every 2 years,do not use US branded BMW Coolant 2) throw the 2 bar(29 psi) coolant cap in the trash and replace it with a 1.4 bar(20 psi) coolant cap from a 1 or 3 series BMW.

The coolants that you mentioned can they be used in 2003-2008/ 7 series models????

yes. Change coolant every 2 years because galvanic corrosion will set in. Many dissimilar metals in an N62 motor. US BMW coolant contains 8 percent sodium hydroxide which will destroy rubber and plastic components in very short time. The usual first sign of failure is a ruptured coolant tank. Sodium hydroxide is used at the track where ethylene glycol is forbidden due to traction issues. Do not use metal impeller water pumps in this motor not even brass, the bearings will not last(pumps operate at high RPM). Use only OEM. Pseudo skeptic engineering and chinese aftermarket parts only add to the problems this motor already has. The original 10 year old water pump, thermostat, valley pan, and center pipe on my N62 now has 120000 miles with no signs of failure. I'll post an update when and if it fails.

Don’t recommend the uro pipe it’s extremely difficult to put on mine would seat the the front seal and wouldn’t expand after prying on it so hard. All in all I’m gonna try to return it and get the aga one the threaded body is a big difference in install it seems

I see there is a o-ring on the back end of the pipe but isn't there a o-ring in a grove in the back also or is that just on the M62 engine?

The o-ring in the back of the engine needs to be replaced with a BMW OEM o-ring. The skinny o-ring on the back of the coolant pipe is to seal the coolant pipe.

Ive had this problem before.. yet today I was topping off coolant, the coolant stick indicator, kind of a red long stick, broke. As I tried to remove it, the stick sunk to the bottom of the expansion tank. Is this going to damage the cooling system? That's the last thing I need after just fixing a coolant leak

Lone Wolf, yes it will. We have machined an outter ring with a seal that pushes up against the engine block. We have sold thousands of these and never have we heard these coming loose over time.

Hi Eric, You do not have to technically, but we recommend it. The reason is because when you expand the coolant pipe, you want to make sure it expands past the seal, not pinching it. And the only way to do that is to check through the opening of the water pump.

Alex, this repair should last a very long time when installed correctly. The aluminum pipe is made of 6061 billet aluminum and the seal is made of viton. We have installed this kit in cars dating back to 2006 and still no issues.

You could just use the OEM pipe and weld it back together.

It's not the pipe that goes bad, it's the seal. In order to replace the seal, you need to remove the pipe. Removing requires 18+ hours of labor.

The only problem I have with this part install is the almost $700 price charged for a metal tube. I can't do that, even if I could afford it. Last portion of the video is blurred because it had our old information like company address and phone number that no longer exists. We did not want new, current and previous customers contacting us at an address and phone that is no longer valid as we have moved into a bigger facility. And the cost of the pipe is $559, however that's not why it is expensive. A lot of R&D went into development of the actual seal itself.

Do you really need to remove the water pump? Having to remove the crankshaft pulley and AC belt to get water pump off adds to the effort.

Hi Bruce, you do not have to but we strongly recommend it if it's your first time installing this coolant pipe. The reason being is because you want to make sure the coolant pipe expands all the way through the seal without pinching it. And the only way to see if it's getting pinched or not is to look through the water pump opening that leads to the coolant pipe. If the seal gets pinched, you'll have to go back and replace the seal again after 10k miles. Personally, I would take the time to make sure it's done properly so I don't have to go back. But if you like to live life on the edge, leave the water pump on.

Pump will come off without removing the pulley. And when I put the new one on, I shortened the bottom bolt by 3mm to make it easier.

Lousy American cars not having inferior O rings costing 9000$ to replace would be one reason. I live in Germany and I have several American cars. 4 to be precise and none ever let me down or needed expensive repairs.Most problems are easy and cheap to solve and can be handled without special tools. Some German cars may look nice, but their reliability is a myth of bygone days. Sad but true.

So funny because I have the exact opposite experience when it comes to American Luxury cars. I drove Cadillacs for almost 20 years, had them in my family since birth the always fell apart after 5 or 6 years, I switched to German cats back in 2001 and have NEVER looked back. I find them much more reliable.
