Timm. Just wanted to say THANK YOU. I purchased a mint 2003 645Ci in late 2023, so 20 years old. 112000 miles but hadn't been used in 4 years. But I found it was using oil and smoking, despite performance and driving perfectly OK. Feared the worst (valve stem seals). But no, I dismantled both PCV valves - unlike you, I found both were clean BUT both had serious splits. Probably the originals from factory in which case a weak point as diaphragms no longer flexible and now brittle, hence the splits. EXACTLY as you describe, took a 100 miles or so after replacement and now, no smoke! I must stress how bad it was before your simple remedy - big puff of smoke on start up and after a motorway blast and then idle followed by re-acceleration, a wall of smoke! Now none of that! THANK YOU.

I recently bought a 2005 645 ci convertible. The exact same issues to the T. Can u give me any pointers as to what u did? I looked over the cover gaskets found a tiny amount of oil. So I just cleaned them up. Hopefully that will be good enough. But was wondering if that’s all I needed. Or should I just replace the gaskets??
@jonathannoble832214 күн бұрын
@@ttp_hylyfe Hi, Well mine were both badly split so I replaced them both. The diaphragms I bought came with the Caps and springs so, as the diaphragms were slightly thicker, I replaced the 3 things on each bank, Parts weren't expensive. Have a VERY could look at the diaphragms - even a tiny hole and it won't work properly. You will have seen that the 645i layout is slightly different - BOTH diaphragms are found as per what Timm calls bank 2 on his 650i i.e. under the engine covers. Hope that helps. Jon

This type of videos should come with the car when you buy it. But I think all they want these days is your money, and that you buy a new car as fast as possible. You need to bring your car to BMW (or whatever) service, and then they change parts. But that is short sighted. BMW, Audi, VW have all very bad reputation these days, and I believe less and less people are loyal to one brand for decades. Cars are getting almost impossible to service, even basic things like DPF change is way too hard on some cars. And those idiotic timing chain locations.

Those diaphragms tear very easily. Especially aftermarket rubber valves. I’ve had 3 550i’s with n62 engine. Never replaced the valve stem seals and I fixed the smoking issue in all of them. A trick to keep the oil out of the engine is to add a 1-3mm rubber disk on the top of the flapper valve. Make sure the disk is smaller than the inner circle of the rubber flapper. And make sure the rubber is clean and seals on the edge. This will keep it from opening so easily to keep the oil out. Also make sure the pinhole on the plastic cover is not blocked off.

@@badtripsoffacid7981 Hey, yes it's a simple enough task to carry out, just be methodical in taking bits off/putting them back but it's certainly not a difficult thing to do by any means. With regards to the smoking, mine wasn't emitting anything noticeable but I just thought it might be worth checking the diaphragms as to my knowledge they'd never been changed (they looked OK upon inspection but I did get the occasional whiff of oil through the vents so certainly couldn't hurt to change them). If yours have split then it's definitely one possible cause of the smoke, just be aware it could the valve stem/guide seals as it's not uncommon for those to fail on this engine, that's a much bigger job though so doing these first is worthwhile job beforehand!

Hi Timm, I have just bought a bmw 540i so the 4.0 n62, and on cold starts will smoke white on idle (I don’t believe there’s a blue tint to it) and when revved which won’t disappear until driven for a couple miles and won’t smoke on idle until left to sit again. After it being fully warm at operating temperature, I can turn it off and leave it to sit for 5 minutes and the smoke issue on idle will be back again until driven. I’ve replaced the pcv seals like indicated in the video and one was in fact cracked. However it’s been a week now and there’s still no improvement. I’ve also tried cleaning the pcv pipes but it still seems to collect oil that is a white kind of colour. Have you any ideas of what it could be? Im hoping it’s not the dreaded valve stems seals, I left to idle for 10 minutes after driving and warming up and revved and there was no smoke. I think it’s brilliant how you’re still helping and advising people on this video after years, I look forward to hearing your response many thanks!

As an ex BMW dealer tech, I've changed a number of the OSV diaphragms on the rear of the inlet manifold on M60/62 engines, usually for poor idle quality though 👌
@bu57614 жыл бұрын
Are OSV diaphragms different than the valve cover pcv valves? I'm trying to diagnose this smoke situation 😑 I've been watching mine blow smoke at red lights for a year and I'm about to get into the repair. Shits embarrassing. And mines a convertible so I just want to slouch down onto the floor if I have to stop for a long light. The longer it sits idle, the more smoke it produces on take off. My buddy said it's the 'rings' and reading through these comments, sounds like it could also be valve stem seals? Same thing, or? I just blew up the ccc (nav screen) apparently as well from jumping it. What a pain. Checked the fuses and can't find any blown (trunk and glove box). Bout to take out the dash panels and ccc to see if there's a fuse on the back of it or something, last resort before just replacing it. Radio still works but the screen never lights up anymore, weird. I tried to reset it, pushing the volume control and both eject buttons.. nothin.

Hey Darren I currently have the m62tu and can't seem to keep it from dying as soon as I start it up. When I unplug the MAF sensor it idles but very poorly but when I plug it back it in it does and even after replacing it still the same problem
@truckatadders Жыл бұрын
@davidrichardson6528 one way to check is once the car's running, if you remove the oil filler cap, the car should start running with a very poor idle, if it doesn't make any difference then it's a good indication that the osv diaphragm is faulty. One other way to check is if you spray some brake cleaner around the area where the osv is located, if the engine revs flare up as you spray it, it's another good indicator that the osv diaphragm is faulty, which, on an older car they tend to do. Heat makes them hard & brittle & they eventually split.
@truckatadders Жыл бұрын
@bu5761 when I was in the trade, we would always look at the cheapest option 1st. Replacing the PCV valves & the OSV diaphragm are a much simpler & cheaper repair than stripping the engine. If it were the rings, it wouldn't just do it when stationary at lights but would also do it when driving down the road.

Hello Mate, need some advice. I have a e90 2007 318i. Smoke on start up and at traffic lights. Wanted to change pcv, but was sent wrong part from ebiy. So mechanic ‘cleaned’ the pcv and hoses. They were filled with hard solidified pieces of oil/sludge. He then put it all back on. It is still smoking. Took car to bmw, they said they have no idea why it is smoking, charged me £200 to tell me this. They said they can open up the rocker cover/ head and maybe diagnose problem, but will charge me to do this. Should I ask them to replace the pcv/oil seperator and all hoses? Before i venture into possibility of stem seals? Also as the current pcv was filled with solid oil, should I ask for the hoses that the pcv hoses go into to also be replaced? So, the pcv has 3 hoses. They go into the pcv, the other end of the 3 hoses go into 3 parts of the car, are these parts likely to also be clogged? Should i replace them also? Or should I go straight to the stem seals? I would appreciate any advice you can give please.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately oil sludge, especially where it has solidified, usually means it wasn't serviced in the past. I would start with replacing the PCV system and hoses and get an oil-service with a fully synthetic oil - and then cross my fingers!

Timm's BMW Repairs and Information nice one. Having that done tomorrow, pcv, all hoses and return pipe back to sump all being replaced. After this is all done, should the smoke stop immediately or does it take abit of time? As in, if there is still smoke afterwards is it because residue is clearing out or because there is a still a fault with the stem seals/pistons?

Hello! I changed those, but still have the problem. Is it possible that dirt in the vent hose causes the problem as well? I ordered one just to try before tearing the engine apart. A friend of mine also in 4.8l had this issue and bought the car cheaper because previous owner didn’t find sense in giving all the money, but after a vent pipe clean his oil consumption an smoke went away. 🤷🏻♂️

Only if you had any clue that N62 engine does not have any serious vacuum in the intake once the car has warmed up and switched to Valvetronic (that is if its still capable of switching to Valvetronic mode at all). Sure the PCV system must be checked before assuming valve guide seals or scored cylinders but there is very good reason why almost everyone ends up doing the valve guide seals. And even then the real cause of the problem does not get repaired. The leaking valve guide seals are not a cause but rather a consequence of a deeper problem which is worn valve guides. And that basically means an engine rebuild.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation3 жыл бұрын
Hello Nils, I will have to disagree - firstly take a look at the other comments below, there are quite a few who have replaced the PCV valves and lost the smoke problem - not only here but on the forums. Your take on the problem is in the mainstream and the purpose of this video is to show that there is an alternative to scrapping cars with N62 engines! Lack of a decent vacuum in the manifold does cause other problems as described here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWOXoGCjjrNnpbs

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 6 months later when you will be posting another video from your security cam showing smoke puffs and then you will keep blaming PCV system again? I dont know how many miles you have on that car, if less than 100k then you still could be fine but I guarantee the blue smoke is going to come. I have two cars with N62 engines I know what I am talking about. I am doing a complete engine rebuild on one of them and the valve guide wear at 160k miles is worse than any older BMW engine I have ever had. These engines are POS and if you want to have one that works great you will need to rebuild it. All your PCV worries will look like joke after that.

@@NilsJakobson Hello again Nils, these sort of problems are exactly what this channel is here for - to help stop these problems happening in the first place. It sounds like you have had some bad luck - but spend a little time reading the comments on this video and the other video's on the channel and you will hear from many happy owners of cars with the N62 engine. I have owned a 2007 650i for 6 years and am heading towards 130,000 miles (I always buy high-mileage cars) - compared to my other cars E31, E32 and E38, the E64 has been the most reliable. I certainly don't think the N62 is a POS, except where they are not looked after - and that means regular (1 year at the most) oil changes - if these are missed or were missed before your ownership then you are going to have many problems. And that is the aim of this channel - I'm sorry you had problems but there are so many happy owners here!

Is there a distinction between continuous smoking vs. smoke coming out after a long period of idle? My 07 X5 4.8i only smokes after idling for 3-4 minutes, then revving the engine; then no more smoke. Before the PCV fix, did your car smoke continuously, or only after a long idle+ high revs like mine?

@BLAZENYCBLACKOPS5 жыл бұрын
If the smoking doesn’t stop after a good amount of time you’ll probably have to replace the valve stem seals , and like he said early in this video it’s no cheap job. They sell a kit where you can replace the stem seals yourself but it takes 20 hrs of labor and you’ll obviously need more time than that if you’re not mechanically inclined, but you’ll save a load of money and your engine in the process.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation4 жыл бұрын
I agree, as I said, changing the PCV valves fixes a good 50-60% of smoking cases, but failing valve stem seals is a real problem, and an expensive one to fix. But I would always recommend changing the PCV's first as it is so cheap and easy - and don't forget to clear out the piping and valve cover as much as possible. To avoid have having valve stem seal failure change your oil every 10,000 miles and use a decent oil.

Absolutely loved that video. Some real good practical info. I even had a light bulb moment. About 6 months ago I changed my Vac hoses and replaced the top front one with a pcv upgraded version. I didn’t however blank off the valve cover CCV. So I now have a CCV on each valve cover and an upgraded pcv, when installed I had to re-adjust my idle with Ista d as it went over 2k rpm. Not long after I noticed 2 error codes 2820 and 2821. These relate to differential servo motor and differential/cam sensor. After checking my crankcase pressure with a manometer it read around 20-28mbar. Could this under pressure in the crankcase cause these faults ? Appreciate the info and any advice on this issue. @@timzadoynov6203 The N63 engine can be a bit smoky, high oil consumption is quite expected - and BMW's 'fix' was to enlarge the oil-pan to hold more oil!
