If you have the BMW N62 engine in your car - 645i, 650i, 745i or 750i and you are getting problems with blue smoke from the exhaust you have probably been told you need to replace the valve guide seals - and it's going to cost you a lot of money!
But 50% - 60% of the causes of smoke is not the valve stem seals - it's the famous PCV valves (called all sorts of names such as CCV, Check-Valve, OSV and a number of other incorrect names). No, these fella's are PCV's, Pressure Control Valves - and they get stuck, tear and get blocked up - and then your car is going to smoke - badly.
More details of crankcase ventilation problems: www.meeknet.co.uk/e31/BMW_M60...
Replacement parts: amzn.to/2Mm9kPk
This is no surprise to BMW owners that have the M60/M62/M62TUB engines - we are quite used to PCV valves causing smoke - and we've been swapping them out for years. But mention smoke and the N62 and everyone shouts stem seals!
To test crankcase Vacuum use this: amzn.to/2Mjf78x
Genaral Purpose Grease: amzn.to/2MnBkC4
This video shows how to stop your N62 smoking in 30 minutes and around £30 - go on, you know you want to.....

Wow, what an informative video. If I only I knew this info 5 years ago I could have fixed my 645ci. The main dealer told me it needed valve seals and quoted me a silly amount of money to do it. I decided to just buy a new car but I never got round to selling the 645 which has sat on my drive untouched ever since. after 5 years without so much as putting the key in the ignition it probably has far more problems now.

It really is my pleasure - and glad to hear it worked out for you. I am worried that this problem is turning into the 'Nikasil' scare of the M60 BMW V8 where the first sign of smoke would scare the owner into selling or scrapping. Just like the valve guide problem there were so few real cases of bore-wear and lots of cases of PCV failure.

Absolutely loved that video. Some real good practical info. I even had a light bulb moment. About 6 months ago I changed my Vac hoses and replaced the top front one with a pcv upgraded version. I didn’t however blank off the valve cover CCV. So I now have a CCV on each valve cover and an upgraded pcv, when installed I had to re-adjust my idle with Ista d as it went over 2k rpm. Not long after I noticed 2 error codes 2820 and 2821. These relate to differential servo motor and differential/cam sensor. After checking my crankcase pressure with a manometer it read around 20-28mbar. Could this under pressure in the crankcase cause these faults ? Appreciate the info and any advice on this issue. Thank you.

Thanks Tim, your site is a goldmine of useful (and money saving) information. I've checked my PCV's (they were ok), replaced the halo and dipped beam bulbs, replaced the sagging trunk struts and changed the oil, air filter and cabin (micro) filters saving ££'s in the process! As you say the 650 really is a lovely smooth GT car, and doesn't have to break the bank even if the valve stem seal do go eventually.

I'll gp for Mercedes I owned 1999 for 11 years C280 with no problem but regular maintenance sold at 240miles still running like a charm. BMW'S are little over engineer. I replaced one suspension air bag, Heather control valve and I have the seat restraining sensor bad. Bad rear backup camera at night. Ultimate driving machine I doubt it now. Anyway I'll hope for the best.

Those diaphragms tear very easily. Especially aftermarket rubber valves. I’ve had 3 550i’s with n62 engine. Never replaced the valve stem seals and I fixed the smoking issue in all of them. A trick to keep the oil out of the engine is to add a 1-3mm rubber disk on the top of the flapper valve. Make sure the disk is smaller than the inner circle of the rubber flapper. And make sure the rubber is clean and seals on the edge. This will keep it from opening so easily to keep the oil out. Also make sure the pinhole on the plastic cover is not blocked off.

Excellent video. I enjoyed it. Beautiful engine bay as well. I have a 2008 550i and I have replaced the PCV valves also. I do have a little smoke after long idles but here in the US I have found a product called AT-205 reseal which helps alot with worn seals to rejuvenate the rubber on the valve stem seals. I didn't realize that you can wash and clean the PCV system periodically so I will do that from now on. I got the car at 100k miles. No smoke. Started changing the oil less frequently and started smoking. I love this motor and the torque it produces. I am a subscriber. Thank you!

Hi Tim, delighted to see you have a KZbin channel. I spent a lot of time on your site when I had an E38. My 750 (N62) is smoking when throttle is applied, after idling. Do you think that could be the PCV (I haven't checked their state yet) or given its after idle, I'm guessing more likely valve seals? Glad to see this is in a saner position than the M62. As an ex BMW dealer tech, I've changed a number of the OSV diaphragms on the rear of the inlet manifold on M60/62 engines, usually for poor idle quality though 👌
@bu5761
@bu5761 3 жыл бұрын
Are OSV diaphragms different than the valve cover pcv valves? I'm trying to diagnose this smoke situation 😑 I've been watching mine blow smoke at red lights for a year and I'm about to get into the repair. Shits embarrassing. And mines a convertible so I just want to slouch down onto the floor if I have to stop for a long light. The longer it sits idle, the more smoke it produces on take off. My buddy said it's the 'rings' and reading through these comments, sounds like it could also be valve stem seals? Same thing, or? I just blew up the ccc (nav screen) apparently as well from jumping it. What a pain. Checked the fuses and can't find any blown (trunk and glove box). Bout to take out the dash panels and ccc to see if there's a fuse on the back of it or something, last resort before just replacing it. Radio still works but the screen never lights up anymore, weird. I tried to reset it, pushing the volume control and both eject buttons.. nothin.

Hey Darren I currently have the m62tu and can't seem to keep it from dying as soon as I start it up. When I unplug the MAF sensor it idles but very poorly but when I plug it back it in it does and even after replacing it still the same problem
@truckatadders
@truckatadders Жыл бұрын
@davidrichardson6528 one way to check is once the car's running, if you remove the oil filler cap, the car should start running with a very poor idle, if it doesn't make any difference then it's a good indication that the osv diaphragm is faulty. One other way to check is if you spray some brake cleaner around the area where the osv is located, if the engine revs flare up as you spray it, it's another good indicator that the osv diaphragm is faulty, which, on an older car they tend to do. Heat makes them hard & brittle & they eventually split.
@truckatadders
@truckatadders Жыл бұрын
@bu5761 when I was in the trade, we would always look at the cheapest option 1st. Replacing the PCV valves & the OSV diaphragm are a much simpler & cheaper repair than stripping the engine. If it were the rings, it wouldn't just do it when stationary at lights but would also do it when driving down the road.

When I inspect a potential 650i convertible, if it does smoke, is there a quick way to tell if it is the PCV valves or if it is the dreaded valve stem seals? I of course will follow all of the steps in your "How to buy a good 650i" video/. Thanks so much, David

If the smoking doesn’t stop after a good amount of time you’ll probably have to replace the valve stem seals , and like he said early in this video it’s no cheap job. They sell a kit where you can replace the stem seals yourself but it takes 20 hrs of labor and you’ll obviously need more time than that if you’re not mechanically inclined, but you’ll save a load of money and your engine in the process.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, as I said, changing the PCV valves fixes a good 50-60% of smoking cases, but failing valve stem seals is a real problem, and an expensive one to fix. But I would always recommend changing the PCV's first as it is so cheap and easy - and don't forget to clear out the piping and valve cover as much as possible. To avoid have having valve stem seal failure change your oil every 10,000 miles and use a decent oil.

Hi Timm, I have just bought a bmw 540i so the 4.0 n62, and on cold starts will smoke white on idle (I don’t believe there’s a blue tint to it) and when revved which won’t disappear until driven for a couple miles and won’t smoke on idle until left to sit again. After it being fully warm at operating temperature, I can turn it off and leave it to sit for 5 minutes and the smoke issue on idle will be back again until driven. I’ve replaced the pcv seals like indicated in the video and one was in fact cracked. However it’s been a week now and there’s still no improvement. I’ve also tried cleaning the pcv pipes but it still seems to collect oil that is a white kind of colour. Have you any ideas of what it could be? Im hoping it’s not the dreaded valve stems seals, I left to idle for 10 minutes after driving and warming up and revved and there was no smoke. I think it’s brilliant how you’re still helping and advising people on this video after years, I look forward to hearing your response many thanks!

What pressure would you see if you had done that test prior to the PCV replacement? Curious if you can determine if it’s the PCV or valve seals.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 3 жыл бұрын
The pressure (or vacuum) can be wildly different if the PCV's are blocked or split - but anywhere between 15-45 millibars and all is good. However, even with the correct vacuum you can have a build-up of gunk in the valve covers that will cause smoking problems. The PCV's are so easy and cheap to replace that replacing them is the easiest test!

Hello Mate, need some advice. I have a e90 2007 318i. Smoke on start up and at traffic lights. Wanted to change pcv, but was sent wrong part from ebiy. So mechanic ‘cleaned’ the pcv and hoses. They were filled with hard solidified pieces of oil/sludge. He then put it all back on. It is still smoking. Took car to bmw, they said they have no idea why it is smoking, charged me £200 to tell me this. They said they can open up the rocker cover/ head and maybe diagnose problem, but will charge me to do this. Should I ask them to replace the pcv/oil seperator and all hoses? Before i venture into possibility of stem seals? Also as the current pcv was filled with solid oil, should I ask for the hoses that the pcv hoses go into to also be replaced? So, the pcv has 3 hoses. They go into the pcv, the other end of the 3 hoses go into 3 parts of the car, are these parts likely to also be clogged? Should i replace them also? Or should I go straight to the stem seals? I would appreciate any advice you can give please.

A long bottle-brush (the ones with the twisted wire core) would do a much better job - I'll give that a go next time! The valve covers have the oil-separator cyclone devices built into them - if they get covered in much they don't work and oil gets past them - hence the need to clean them out.

Only if you had any clue that N62 engine does not have any serious vacuum in the intake once the car has warmed up and switched to Valvetronic (that is if its still capable of switching to Valvetronic mode at all). Sure the PCV system must be checked before assuming valve guide seals or scored cylinders but there is very good reason why almost everyone ends up doing the valve guide seals. And even then the real cause of the problem does not get repaired. The leaking valve guide seals are not a cause but rather a consequence of a deeper problem which is worn valve guides. And that basically means an engine rebuild.

I have owned a 2007 650i for 6 years and am heading towards 130,000 miles (I always buy high-mileage cars) - compared to my other cars E31, E32 and E38, the E64 has been the most reliable. No orange bits on your engine! Completely different crankcase ventilation system. If it is cold where you are expect a lot of steam like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ_Yd5qCl5t8gcU

I ran the car today and after parking it I let it sit on idle. It smoked but not crazy hard. Than I stepped on the gas in parking gear, it shot a smoke cloud than went back to light smoke of idle. Also I noticed little bit of blue smoke when I stepped on the gas. What do you suggest?

@@timzadoynov6203 The N63 engine can be a bit smoky, high oil consumption is quite expected - and BMW's 'fix' was to enlarge the oil-pan to hold more oil! However, because the turbo's in the 'V' of the engine produce a lot of heat they can affect the valve guides - but, if you don't need to top-up the oil between the 10,000 mile service intervals everything is normal.

Okay, because I warmed up the car today really well. When it was sitting in idle it was just having little white smoke. But every time I stepped on the gas pedal I saw good amount of blue smoke coming out. It smelled also, Than went back to little bit of white smoke. I was thinking it could be the turbos or the pcv. Or that’s normal for a n63 to shoot blue smoke when stepping on the gas in idle?

Yes, cheap and easy to do - then give it 100 miles or so to clear.

The best plan is to always change the PCV valves and then give it 100 miles or so before worrying any further!
