Don't worry, Timm. Even if the cylinder liners are damaged, they can be replaced. We do this on the N62 and N63. It is easy to change the timing mechanism then.

Hello Timm, I just bought a 645 E64, two years after I traded in my beautiful and almost perfect E63 for next to nothing. I bought a cheap high miler, with lots of problems, but thanks to your channel I did so with knowledge and confidence. A week later I have solved most of the issues. Now it’s just a question of paint correction, a few new leather panels, new discs and pads, and alloy refurbishment. It will always be a project but the whole family loves it. Amazing what a head turner it is at nearly 20 years old. So greatful for your practical enthusiasm and advice Timm.

Your 650i is beautiful, so glad it didn't require the expensive valve stem seals. Thank you for the fascinating explanation, probably saved a lot of people undue expenditure. Yes I love the e28 too and it was nice to see it on the road, such a rare sight. I've had a 525e for over 20 years and hopefully I'll get it running again one day.

I have the n62. I was smoking. I had several leaks. Even prior to the leaks I had smoke. When I changed the valve cover gaskets and other related gaskets, I took a syringe and poured Barrs valve seal conditioner over each of the springs and let it sit over night. I also changed the blow by hose set up from the snake to the 2 separate hoses. No smoke since.

I watched your video about doing an oil change on the N62 engines, and plan to do my own here soon. My problem is that I can't seem to find the oil you recommended here in the US. Great result. It’s always nice to fully understand these type of quirks. I have an very intermittent dynamic drive issue on my 06 650 that I’ve been trying to figure out for years. I don’t want to swap out the components unnecessarily as I suspect it’s an easy fix just as was the case in this video. I suspect there are many others in my position too. 🤞

My 645 was only smoking when cold, but it made same strange noise when pushing the accelerator. I was replacing a few suspicious hoses and added the membranes to the list. The old ones looked good, but the difference the new ones made was quite surprising. But it's good to know that I don't have to do the valve stem seals yet. What makes them go bad, temperature, lack of oil changes, or just shady production quality? Thanks for these videos, not many people do N62 related videos beyond the water hose and the valve stem seals, your detailed videos and explanations are much appreciated. Which version of INPA are you using on it? The one I have doesn't work on the VVT, which is one of the issues that still needs sorting. 002862 and -3, VVT power supply, not sure where to look quite yet.

You got me worried for a minute Tim, I thought you had lost the love for the 650i lol great video though, I’m glad it was a free ish fix 👍 I’m still of the opinion that the e63 and e64 will be future classics, mine is a 630i coupe LCI and I don’t see many about these days. I spent out on new injectors this year, it didn’t make financial sense, but I don’t care, I love the car and a replacement car would have lost more in value once driven off the forecourt than the expense of the injectors, that’s how I justify it anyway 😂 keep up the good work, I’m enjoying your videos 👍

I have an E64 630i and the roc module (roll bar module) is faulty... it probably stored an error in this module due to undervoltage... but no test device in the world can delete this error and this ROC roll bar module has not been available to buy from BMW since 2023. ... There are probably only two or three companies in England where you can send the module and they will then reprogram it so that the error disappears and the airbag light in the cockpit goes out... Sad... is this my last hope...😢

Have considered adding a catch can / oil air separator to your CCV system? I have an N62 E70 X5 with the exact same issue as yours and am seriously considering 2 pro vent 200 catch cans . The car is doing mostly suburban driving and frequently caught in heavy, stopped traffic. The car has even fouled the cat converters because of the amount of oil being sucked into the motor. I have replaced the CCV system, this reduced but not eliminated the problem. I would appreciate your comments or ideas. Mike
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

I think the main problem is a lack of manifold vacuum due to engine power being controlled by valve lift rather than throttle position - a catch-can may work!

Timm, first off, thanks for all the videos. Very, very cool. I had a couple questions I'd hope you could answer. First off, is the HT-12 coolant a suitable alternative to the g48? It is difficult to find the g48 in BMW brand (Zerex is available), even online sometimes. I have read that the HT-12 is ok to use but I would like the best for the 650. Which leads to the pcv and mechatronix seals. Would you personally use a cheaper pcv or get OEM BMW part? Same with Mechatronix seals and solenoids? Do you think that with these parts it would be ok to use non oem replacements. It seems I have fallen into a gem, however, we have no true way of knowing how the previous owner treated her. Same for the mechanics. Trustworthy? Who can say. After watching your videos, though. I have decided there are a few things I have the ability to do to keep her in great shape and give me a bit more peace of mind. Thanks for your time and the videos. -Adam

Hi Timm. I also had a question for you regarding oil. I live in Moab Utah where it gets above 100 degrees F. regularly. Do you think it wise to use 5w40 in my location. We are also at 4800ft elevation. It was suggested to me by a mechanic who works on German vehicles. Yet all of the records I received from previous owner read 5w30. What are your thoughts? I have already purchased two filters, you know, just to be prepared for inflation, haha. One is Mann and the other Mahle. I'm almost certain they are the same!

Even with the smallest vacuum leak can cause oil to be sucked into the inlet manifold even more so than with a fully sealed system, correct? If that is the case, then I am sure that so many N62s are mis-diagnosed with bad valve stem seals. Every time I see an N62 at a junk yard, I remove the CCV intake hose and sure enough, it is full of oil (usually dripping out!) Valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, camshaft sensor o-rings, valvetronic sensor o-rings, dipstick o-ring, oil filler cap, vacuum pump o-rings, CCV diaphragms & associated hoses could all be sources of vacuum leaks, correct?
@thatslowjag
@thatslowjag 3 жыл бұрын
I have also noticed that unplugging the MAF sensor will keep my N62 from building up oil inside the manifold during idle. I assume because unplugging the sensor deactivates valvetronic, thus increasing vacuum since the throttle is now closed?
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you disconnect the MAF then idle is throttle-body controlled rather than valve lift - and that means an increase in manifold vacuum. Usually a sign that the valve covers are filled with varnish which stops the oil separation working. Yes, many N62's in the scrapyard with only popped PCV valves!

Tim I recently replaced the crankcase vent valves on my 07 750i with N62 and now it sometimes makes a sort of harmonic sound but doesn't last long is there a chance I didn't get them installed properly the ones I removed had no tears in the diaphrams any input greatly appreciated

That sounds like you have a vacuum leak - the PCV's do sing if there is a vacuum leak somewhere on the crankcase.

I'm going to have a look at an E64 650i this week, What are the main 3 points I should look out for, obviously will check it's been maintained and serviced properly but things like checking the roof and for roof leaks, where to best look etc. Thank you.

The roof can be difficult to fix - so make sure it is not torn, raises and lowers - as do the windows, the rear windows do fail and are difficult to fix. No smoke, easy start, quiet engine and soft gearchanges are all very important!

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks Tim, when you say no smoke, it's going to smoke a bit if it's started from cold, but that smoke should stop after about 1 minute, correct ? I'm looking for continuous smoke I'm guessing? As per the amount that was coming out of yours when you were reversing onto your drive ?

What do you do when your key gets washed in the washing machine? A VIN coded CA key from BMW still has to be coded in ISTA for Comfort Go. 99 percent of the info I see is rubbish. This would be good material to cover.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation bla bla bla. Learned alot about CAS 3+ this week. These N62 motors have low tension rings which stick from time to time. 5w40 Shell Helix in UK is the equivelent of our Pennzoil in the US. N62TU respond well to this oil(Vanos and oil consumption). 30W oil runs past the exhaust valve guide seals and cruds up the back of the exhaust valves with blowby from stuck rings....

Hi Timm, as always a very informative video. My 545i is unfortunately smoking quite badly. I’m trying the liqui moly additive route but it’s not really helping. I was quoted around 2.5k euro to do the valve stem seals so I was surprised to hear it can be done for around 1k. Is that throwing rate nowadays? Thanks a lot and stay safe

Agree with Tim on the above reccomendations. First start with the crank case PCV diaphragms and cleaning or on my case replacing the dry rotted breather hoses. Especially if you have the older version with the one hose that splits into three. The new version is just two hoses. Both items are cheap to purchase and easy DIY in 20 minutes.

The engine bay shouldn't produce smoke - it was probably oil getting out of the valve covers and dropping on the exhaust manifolds
