Not sure why everyone hates on these. I have a 2005 645ci with the n62. It has no oil or coolant leaks, no stem seal issues. It is a beast of an engine with v8 character that cannot be compared to the 6 cylinder. As with all engines the key to success is very regular oil changes.

I have a 2008 550i and I absolutely love it. My dad and I had the car on jackstands in the driveway for a week waiting on parts to come in, but we ended up doing the upper timing cover gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and the alternator bracket gasket all at the same time. About 30 hours of work total, but I’ve put 10k on the motor since and she’s run like a bat out of hell. One of the best bargains on the used car market as of right now, if you know how to work on them.

About a year ago I fully rebuild N62 on 04 X5, was a pretty cool project. If you replacing chain guides and your car 04 and older make sure to buy new bolts for them as they were redesigned with chain guides in 2005 and newer if I'm not mistaking.

I just changed the valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, vacuum pump gasket, and oil pressure switch. While the valve covers were off I took a syringe and dropped bars valve seal conditioner directly over the valve springs to soak the rubber seals. I let it sit a couple days , and also changed the blow by hose set up to run from bank 1 to upper manifold and bank 2 to lower. I have not had exhaust smoke since completing this. 545i 293k miles.

Warning long comment Have you ever tried using AT205 reseal in a 545i 6spd N62 who's stem seals just started leaking??? I did to mine and it absolutely cured it. I did this after retiming the engine and replacing all of the valve cover seals. I was so fed up that I had to take them off again I decided to try. Now I'm putting a btl in every time I change the oil (mobile1 0w40) and hengst filters. I do this every 6213 miles(10K kms). I've put almost 40K miles on it far and no issues. The reason I had to retime the engine though was the massive oil leaks when I got it allowed the bank2 5-8 cyl. both cams to advance 30degress on the exhaust and 23on the intake and they wouldn't return. It caused an erratic misfire that every shop thought was the timing chain skipped, but I felt it, it was tight. So I just had to readjust bank 2 vanos adjuster and install new cam bolts. The old shop put in new coils and plugs and vanos solenoids for me before giving up. My dad bought me this car 2 weeks before he died because he got it for 500$ and he knew I could fix it. Or maybe he thought he was trying to teach me a lesson. I'll never sell this car its tooo damn fun to drive, WAY better than my e39 540i sport wagon. Just the active suspension, Napa leather cooled seats, the turn in is incredible compared to the e39 wagon. I may sell my wagon and supercharge it, or maybe even vice versa. I dunno, I always try the easy shit first as sometimes you make more problems by going straight to doing the stem seals.

All the commenters below saying "never had an issue" yata yata, are so full of it. My 1 owner E53 had FAILING VALVE STEM SEALS by 60k. Don't tell me I didn't maintain, because it was cared for particularly well; its been living in the garage its entire life. At 77k the items I had to replace on my N62: valve stem seals, timing cover gasket, passenger side PCV diaphragm, alternator/VR, leaking power steering reservoir & thermostat. Don't get me wrong, its a (relatively) reliable motor, but I don't want to read some bullshit about your cars reliability because YOU own it! Cant wait for when I get hit with the inevitable: coolant crossover pipe, exploding expansion tank, alternator bracket gasket, a new one- Valvetronic servos?, etc etc etc... N62 & no oil leaks... what a load of horse shit. Im starting to think these engines are so reliable because of the oil top ups they get every 3 weeks...

One common failure on the N62B44 is the DIVA(Not DISA FLAP) motor on the back of the intake it doesn't throw a code on the screen but if you check in INPA very often the motor isn’t working. Oh and the oil pressure sender leaking. My n62b44 ran low on oil and the bank 2 head’s cam adjusters advanced 30 degrees and required retiming. The fault was an intermittent misfire on all cylinders of bank 2 (5-8)

I'm one of those with an N62 with no issues. I've had it since it had 15K miles, it has now around 90K miles. Yea, I'd say relatively low miles, plus mild weather and garaged most of the time have had a lot to do with it being this reliable.

Great video Nathan, and the shop progress looks great too...That alternator bracket seal is behind the driver’s side engine mount, so not such a bad job if one is doing the timing chains already, but a pretty lengthy process if that’s the only job being handled...the other thing to watch out for on there is the headlight wiring insulation peeling off inside the factory headlights, but that’s more of a general e60 issue, and I’m sure you’ve encountered it already. Thanks for the video and have a great weekend!

You forgot the biggest one! The intermediate levers go bad and cause rough idle at first and then they get progressively worse until it just doesn't run properly and you have to get new levers. Expensive job. Easier to get a new motor sometimes. I picked up a 2005 x5 4.4 with the sport package for $500. Had a bad engine. Bought a junkyard engine for $350 from pick a part. Got lucky, it runs great. After changing the vanos seals and cleaning the solenoids, that is. Ran like shit until I did that. Put it on INPA and checked it all out, runs smooth like butter now. Passed California smog no problem. It's my daily driver for the last year. Knock on wood!

I’m deploying the schedule of remove and replace all the components I can get too, add liquid moly oil saver, liquid moly injector cleaner change fluids and 🤞diminish the probability of big time issues, just want this car for a fun summer/fall drive and get 3 more years and any day after that is a blessing.

Also, a lot of these problems could be avoided if you run a cooler thermostat. The heat kills the valve stem seals and plastic parts, including the chain guides. You'll get a check engine light for coolant temp too low, unless you code it out, but these engines will last a lot longer. They only run them so hot for emissions purposes.

I disagree with your statement highly unreliable but this is my opinion. These are just normal bmw repairs that any owner will encounter if you own the n62 Early n62 with had issues with the intermediate levers also causing multi cylinder miss fires The oil and coolant leaks are pretty easy repairs to complete if your handy with tools and patient Yes if you take it to the shop you will pay a small fortune I have done many of the repairs you mentioned and alot of stem seals also at around 180-200k is when I have been replacing them and it is a tedious task but not hard Anyway enjoy watching your vids 👍 just wanted voice my opinion as i love the v8 bimmers maybe it because I own one and have had for a long time as a daily driver

Brandon Lerman the bmw N63 engine is a terrible design that wasn’t ready for marketing, yes they’ve had good achievements with the fuel injected turbocharged v8 putting out enough horsepower with great gas mileage, but the design has many flaws to it that will end up affecting the driver financially, seals are always leaking due to the massive heat, so with the engine itself burning oil, you have to deal with oil leak as well, there was a huge lawsuit against bmw on this particular engine, and that’s because the design is still poor, and shouldn’t have been released to buyers, because it’s a money pit, the in-line 6 is a far better engine, and in my opinion still very fast with even 300 horsepower, some people are stuck with the v8 but these engines are like problematic children with ADHD you have to stay on top of them financially, just imagine the amount of drivers who ended up buying one of these engines, and have no clue what they are up against, leaking oil burning through coils, causing a misfire, reduced engine malfunction, main fuel pump failure, and the engine saying low oil level, it’s a financial suicide to add oil in an engine that doesn’t have a measurement dipstick, that stupid computer in the dash will say oil level fill, but then you could be flooding the engine with oil, honestly bmw have lost their god damn mind, I still love bmw vehicles though.

I am running base standard ngk spark plugs and chinese ebay ignition coils changed twice since I had the car so every 40k. I did have a problem with the rubber crank case vent valves they rip and thought was the plugs had a misfire. Cheap fix like 10.00 bucks for the rubber valves. They are easy to swap out right on top the motor I would replace these if you are bored watch a you tube vid. I am running 50/50 standard supertech walmart coolant. I bought the car from a wealthy lady and she did both the major known problems of the car the valve guide seals and alternator bracket oil gasket. Those services were done around 100k miles ago or more about 7 years ago. I say once these engines are sorted they are very good in my opinion. Change the oil every 7500 miles maybe you wont have the valve guide issues. I did have the coolant leak near the back of the transmission hard fix like two years ago I put in a package of bars leak powder stop leak $7 bucks and I could not believe it fixed the leak. Also 2 years ago I replaced the hard plastic return coolant hose that runs on top of the radiator the hard plastic cracked and had a leak I spliced in a copper fridge line hose I got at home depot like $15 bucks better than a new bmw hose. Maybe I have been lucky but I have drove the hell out this car with not much trouble in the last 4-5 years same can be said for my e39 540i I owned in the past and a 2003 M3 drove the heck out those cars with little trouble as well. I hope my luck continues will drive it till a major failure only paid $4500 for this car and put 70-80k on it last 4-5 years and it still looks good nice paint and pretty good smooth fast power. from what ive gathered most of the problems have to do with oil changes, if they recommended that 2010 get oil changes every 10k imagine if it has only had 3 oil changes in 10 years, that kinda deal

@@tjkoko2001 Hi yes that sound right , for they must be good engines, many engines can be fragile if the oil is not looked after . Thanks

I put AT205 reseal in my 545i when the seals started smoking. It totally fixed them. I recommend adding a bottle to every oil change just to keep the oil seals on the engine supple.
