My 2008 N62 required new gaskets at about 230 000 km, I recommend disassembling the entire engine and check all parts. The cost of parts and labor was around 2000 pounds (Eastern block FTW :D ). I have new seams everywhere, new pipes for coolant, new coolant tank and so on... Once fixed, this engine puts a smile on my face every time I run it.

2000 pounds is nothing, compared with the prices of the newer engines repairs like the N57 Diesel (witch around 250 000, need some new engine parts to prevent total failure or the N53 direct injection crap...

Ok, there are two versions of the N62, the original 4.4l, and the 2008-10 4.8l N62B48 TU. What you have presented is absolutely correct for the 4.4l, but the 4.8l added an oil cooler. This addition has helped reduce the various problems caused by all the seals drying out. Those who have the later engine and have changed their oil every 5k, instead of 15k are not experiencing many of the typical N62 problems.

@@setogatto i bought an '06 650i about 6 months ago. 74k for 9k. beautiful car and decent price as they still blue book for 11-12+... I brought it to a local shop (ex BMW mechanics that now own their own shop and do quality work for less price than dealer) and had the valve cover gaskets, front timing cover gaskets, oil pump rebuilt etc just as preventative maintenance cause it did have a small oil leak. (mechanic explained that it does have a lot to do with the climate its been in also though) outside of what was stated in this video, I'm currently trying to figure out why it has a rough idle on cold starts sometimes (only happens for like 30-40 seconds sometimes but drives me nuts). once it warms up, run like a CHAMP and no issues at all. got 26.5 mpg on my last road trip over 1k miles (never put it in sport mode, but if your feeling sassy switching it from valve tronic to the actual throttle body wakes this thing up ALOT) It's a very unique bmw that still turns heads and I actually love the Bangle rear end (some don't) has the cold weather package, sport package and premium sound system package also. only replying cause i noticed this was posted pretty recently. Car has TONS of power and very beautiful looks imo. I also vin checked the maintenance records and found it to have been serviced very regularly. I do not regret buying it. They also stated that they have seen substantial temperature degree drop (10-12 degrees) from liqui-moly oil first hand at a track on their friends bmw. heat is the killer of all things mechanical so every little bit of reduction helps. just like the OP posted about having an oil cooler. also read a thread about a LOGIC7 thermostat that is aftermarket and drops the running temperature. I'm going to look into doing that next. sorry for the book report and if anything is wrong feel free to say so (anyone)

@@BMWDoctor Thanks for the video. I have one with 290k miles. I love it. Just changed the valve cover, timing cover, and vacuum pump gaskets. I thought the leak was coming from the timing cover, but turned out to be the vacuum pump gasket. After I put everything back together I was getting misfires, so I pulled the valve cover back off and recognized the spark plug tube had cracked, allowing oil to soak the spark plug. I would recommend changing the tubes with the valve cover as they updated the tubes to be encased in a metal. I do have a question. I'm getting camshaft position sensor faults code on both sides after completing this job. They are not damaged and that code was not coming up prior. Any suggestions to correct this? Thanks.

Great video!!! You forgot to mention the o-rings on the oil thermostat housing and o-rings on the oil lines that connect to it. I learned the hard way and basically did the alternator bracket seal replacement job 3 times due to the o-rings leaking as well! I recommend anyone replacing the gasket also buy the 4 o-rings just to be safe!!!

I was quite lucky with mine, I took a chance on a newly imported 2006 750 LI that had no service book or any repair document. Its got 120.000 miles on the clock and it is an absolute jem, no oil leaks, no blue smoke, no coolant leaks and runs amazingly! I'm very lucky, as obviously eveything or a lot of the main problems must have been already sorted. I've recently serviced it and added some red line seal saver. I've owned ALOT of bmws several of which had the N62 engine. Although some problems are inevitable, if you service it regularly and use seal saver additives you really will be able to enjoy a leak smoke free vehicle. People forget these cars are old now and get passed on without a care people neglect servicing old cars.... they are great vehicles as long as they have been taken care of.

Hey Doctor Dean! Great channel great job! I am also a BMW enthusiast and have a little collection.... M43 N46 M52 M54 N62B48 and my beloved M57 daily at 350.000 km all hassle free : -) Around 2000 BMW raised the thermostat on the gasoline engines to 105 degrees for efficiency reasons... When I am pushing my 650 in summer the oil reaches 130 degrees.... this will heat torture all the seals and plastic parts and eventually cause all the oil spillage. In the US they make a modified thermostat which runs around 90 degrees (logic7). It‘s pricey, but doing all the seals will be ten times more. I put mine in the V8 two years ago....now running about 15degrees cooler.... no issues no engine light! You and the followers might consider this! Greetings from the Nürburg area!

If you want greater reliability a lower tstat is a great idea. (Its just a simple part swap, ease of doing it depends on accessibility in the engine bay). It reduces thermal stresses on the engine, all the fluids in it, all the plastic pieces and rubber gaskets, and the cooling system too. It is no mere coincidence the prevalence of oil and coolant escape in BMWs of all sizes has correlated over time with increasing engine operating temps. Situation things like removing superfluous bits of plastic from around the headlights helps ventilate the heat also helps my V8 E34, even things like washer reservoirs become hard to find at 30+ years old. A heat shield to protect the ABS unit in I6 E39s is a good idea. The simple effect of the fan shroud on idle temps is also often overlooked.

Found a 2007 650i that has already had all valve stems and valve seals replaced along with all engine gaskets. Only other common problem on those cars is the coolant transfer pipe which this car has never struggled with. Are any of those above issues a recurring issue that needs to be addressed multiple times or is it a one and done kind of thing. Also all these repairs were done in 2017 so this car has been running good for at least 6 years since. Thx

I was told the one of the main reasons the valve stem seals and coolant leak is because people start using non BMW oil and non BMW coolant after their free maintenance runs out. Apparently BMW fluids have additional additives that help plastic and seals some ordinary oil and coolant don’t have. I have 2005 645 and haven’t had any issues whatsoever, it might be because I get my oil changed yearly and coolant changed every two years at the dealership. Sometimes it’s worth having BMW maintain your car or use factory fluids (Knock on wood). Cheers.

FYI, I would have thought that BMW has no proprietary ownership of lubricants or their fluids. On the other hand, these "none BMW" lubricant products are used in many high-end vehicles without any problems, therefore such arguments are pretty baseless.

This is such a genuine load of BS you've been told/sold, haha. There is cheap aftermarket and quality aftermarket, yes if you use bargain stuff with low additives you can see these problems, but the difference between genuine and quality OEM is usually just price. The main problem to me in these N62s other than the new things they tried that ended up design failures was the factory oil service interval was stupidly long in these 2000s cars. I've seen far too many service books for these where they actually SKIP oil changes at a yearly service! BMW management wanted to try and keep running costs down, and someone came up with the line that top ups (because they didn't worry so much about engines consuming oil) would provide enough new additives. This is bunk, no engineer would ever agree with this. Fuel contamination from blowby interferes with the lubricating properties of oil, its a solvent that does the opposite job of oil (solvents reduce surface adhesion) and accelerates "aging" of rubbers/plastics (by dissolving additives out of the polymer matrix). All fluids used in a car break down (my science major at uni was biochemistry, a prerequisite was organic chemistry - which is hydrocarbons - fuels oils plastics rubber etc etc) - they ALL oxidise and shear in an area-under-the-curve way as a function of mechanical stress, heat stress, and time. You can't do much about the mechanical stresses other than not drive (duh) but time and heat you can - oil changes, and a lower tstat and making sure the cooling is top notch will lower stresses on all these compounds and the surfaces they interact with. BMW started the uptick in operating temps in the M62 for marginally better Nox emissions and efficiency (lipstick on a pig style arguments) and the higher it went with each version of the V8 the greater the cost to reliability and owners' wallets. BMW don't have magic factories that make oil and additives that can actually last 25000km. My E34 V8 that's ticking past 308000km had a reputation for AT failures between 150-200 thou km because of "lifetime" fluid that ... would drastically shorten the lifetime of the slushbox that it was never changed in. So just like E60/E61/E63/E64/E65/E66 with these N62s... they depreciate to being suspiciously good value on the used market from bad reputations that are deserved, but that savvy buyers and owners can mitigate. The N63 is worse IMO. They crammed the turbos in the vee where you can't really do anything meaningful about reducing heat stress of that fireball of a setup.

I have a 550 with the 4.8l. I haven’t had much for engine problems after having it for around 6 months. I do have a transmission problem tho. Based on my experience, the engine is mostly good other than high maintenance costs.

@menukaariyadasa5863
@menukaariyadasa5863 3 жыл бұрын
How about you buy something with a 2UZ in it, instead of making life difficult for your self by swapping an engine into a car which never meant to have it. The swap it self will cost waayyy more than the maintenance on the n62, and it’s probably a rare swap, so not much knowledge about it, or kits to make the process easier. That swap, is just asking for headaches and a financial drain, just don’t do it, if you don’t want to lose money, engine swapping, isn’t easy, you have to take into account electronic systems like the can BUS system, the transmission, diff, etc. A car with an engine swap, even if the swapped engine itself is reliable, doesn’t make for a good daily driver, ask all the people who have done an engine swap, they wish that they had just kept the car stock in the end.

Yeah ask the owner , or ask for a receipt for proof. Or ask him for the garage that replaced it if he says he didn’t get a receipt simple. As in the U.K. they must have it on there system as nobody works in there cars here YOU MUST BY LAW take it to a garage for Repair’s

I paid 3 times that for exactly a 2007 550i e60 with 260k kms Also none of the known issues were done, or at least not properly done... On top of that my oil pan needed replacement and the vacuum pump seal leaked oil. Also a very common one on this one. Quite easy to replace as it's easily accessible. Pretty sure my stem seals are done, too but I don't feel like doing them anytime soon. Hell of a job. and I forgot the coolant reservoir leaked and needed replacement. Also a common one oh and the thermostat was gone too. Man now I think about it... all within 6 months I've owned this car :/

@_J.P._ 3 жыл бұрын
Not everyone knows how to fix his car alone and even those who can do not have a garage at their disposal if they need to fix a thing or two. That leaves a lot of potential buyers out of the game which pretty much translates back into the real ammount of serious buyers. One group that can and will fix most of the things themselves and then a small group that simply has the money to get it taken care of. If the resale price would be too high then the 1st group wouldn't buy it and the 2nd would buy something else.

Just adding my 5 cents (loooong five cents): Valve cover - there are updated tubes with heat shielding for each spark plug and they are pretty cheap. Considering running costs of such a car of course and that you need 8 of them. If you haven't changed them or don't know the age simply swap them out as they can crack and/or not seal properly allowing oil to leak on them. Alternator bracket seal - there are two versions, one older and one updated so make sure to get the new one. Take good care when ordering one to have the right one for your engine. One has a center joint and another one has not. N62 engine are not all the same. And same as previous - if you don't know when it was done then do it as soon as possible to be sure it is okay. If not then your engine will pretty much empty all of its oil in less than 5 minutes of city driving and if you are on the highway then good luck stopping on a sideline fast enough before you run dry. This is the most idiotic thing anyone has ever done to any engine I've ever seen. There are 2 O rings on the oil thermostat and another 2 O rings on the oil lines so buy those along with the big seal. They are cheap but the labour is time consuming and could cost you about 2-3k in a shop because you have to pull out and unmount: fan, belt, alternator, power steering, engine mount, engine mounting damper/rubber and finally the alternator bracket + putting it all back + torque specs or your alternator plate will crack at the top. This issue will silently reveals itself by rough cold starts (because you are way below minimum oil) and maybe if you are really close to a breakout even running like 6 to 7 cylinders only. If you check your oil and refill the rough start will go away and if yes them immediately inspect the ground under the engine. If you leak you are in the market to do this job. If you are lucky your BC will telll you "Low oil engine STOP" but if you do not get that warning you might be in the market for a new engine. Good luck finding one used that is worth a full rebuild to be sure you install a healthy one. This might cost considerably more as you probably paid for the whole car. Some people would suggest honing all the cylinders to fix the dry run but it usually introduces more problems as it may actually fix. As for DIY complexity - if you can change your automatic gearbox oil then you are safe to do this on your own witouth issues. Just have some brake cleaner at hand to fully spray the whole bracket before you start removing screws as they are mixed (torx and regular bolts, no idea why) and not easy to spot when dirty. Once you clean it you can find all of the screws easy. Rest is straight forward and then back in reverse order. Another big oil leak may be the vacuum pump but that is also easy to do. Way easier as the alternator bracket seal. That's all for the biggest oil leaking spots. Others are the usual suspects like any other car - engine crankshaft pully seal (the main one in the center), oil pan seal, and various hoses. But those are common in any car if they are on the end of their life span. If you happen to own a N62B48 then all of the above are your least problems :D ...and if you happen to own the Alpina 4.8 then you are looking at a time bomb that will one day leave you stranded for good as this particular engine is not exactly what you would expect from Alpina (yes they fckd that one up really hard). Getting a replacement is hard and even then it is not a wise purchase as such an engine might be just as bad as yours or even worse. Or close to become bad. The 4.4 is the one to go for if you plan on using it. Occasionally or even daily. If you are willing to risk then try the 4.6 (only as pre facelift thou) but if you decide to get a 4.8 then be ready to pay at lleast double what you paid for the car just in maintenance in the first one to two years of ownership + additionally whatever comes your way in the future. The 4.4 engines are very nice but they will become a rare sight on roads more and more as time goes by. The 4.8is is laready rare as a Lamborghini. If you still want the E53 model but more affordable then go for the 3.0d version. I do not like diesel cars at all but in this case it is allright as the torque is very close to the V8 plus the engine is cheap to buy if you need it replaced completely. Sorry for the long comment but I think a few people may be interrested :)
