BMW N63 S63 Timing tool and chain - WHAT TO BUY ?

In this video I discuss the options of what to buy when it comes to Timing chain and the correct tools to install them. You don't need to risk buying the cheap eBay kits but at the same time you can get OEM quality, GENUINE chain and tensioners without paying the exorbitant BMW Dealership prices.
As for the installation tools, you can buy a cheap $60 kit that will do the job as good as the $600+ expensive ones, as long as you buy the correct one to suit your car.
This is for N63 and S63 NON TU - if your car has a N63TU or a S63TU then parts will be different.

Mercedes tech here i have never worked on a bmw s63 motor just recently bought one needed to replace headstud due to incorrect torque long story short i bought the timing kit had all 4 cams held down crank locked my dumbass used the factory chain tensioner to hold tension when i had the tool first start car was running fine but now it is throwing timing codes your 100% right on using the tool i think mine jumped a tooth 😩 gotta drop the motor and retime it again wish i had seen your video first love the channel keep it up ❤

Hi, if the car is still running fine but having timing / VANOS codes you could try to delete all engine adaptations

Hi, there are plenty of talking online saying you can replace the timing chain without removing the heads however none of them have proven it can be done. In my opinion YOU CANNOT DO THAT. Technically you can, but you will not be able to make the seals/gaskets sit properly on the surface of the block / heads / timing cover. I would definitely recommend the job to be done properly. Consider a full rebuild since you’re already doing the job.

Hi Greg, I tried asking BMW but they said I couldn’t buy those tools so you just buy search for them only being mindful the different S63 versions use different tools - the tool in the video is a single bank tool which means you set timing to one bank then move the tools to do the next.

Hi, there is another video on the channel where I talk about the issues with timing chain on the N63 engine. Unfortunately the knock noise is likely coming from rods and timing chains don’t usually make that sound.

I’m not sure about BMW part number but just look at list for s63TU engines - the slot for the intake and exhaust are different for the TU engines
