I was having the same hesitating, stuttering problem with my BMW 2005 330CI for 4 years, I didn't replaced the ICV, just cleaned it, but before clean it I shaked it to see if I can hear the rattle, I heard it but it got stuck , so after I sprayed it with the throthle body & air intake cleaner I heard it so clear, improved but stil have little up and downs on the RPM, think if I replace it will get better, I just want to thank your effort and time to make this step by step video tutorial, I really do appreciate it❗💯

Perfect! Often times a worn PCV system can cause issues like this and its easy to throw parts at the problem thinking its something else. These PCV systems are a pain to do because of the location but patience is always a virtue on this job (and maybe someone with some small hands too). - Gareth Foley

Thank you for the question Miguel.The tools you are going to need is a 3/8" ratchet, some 3/8" extensions, assorted 3/8" metric sockets, and a T40 bit driver. You will also need some flat head screw drivers and if you can get it, a flexible hose clamp driver. - Gareth Foley

Very nice video. Extremely helpful in doing this job on my 2005 X3. If there are other X3 owners doing this, there are a couple differences but nothing major, for instance there are no vacuum lines to switch on the X3. Hardest part of the job was reconnecting new hoses to the PCV itself during reinstall. I put a little oil on all the o-rings to help, but still tricky. Thanks again!

More then likely caused by something else as the PCV would have to be clogged completely, if you are dealing with several profuse oil leaks then I would lean towards it being the PCV, but I would also check things like the MAF and O2 Sensors as well, common culprits for this code. Hope that helps.

Excellent explanation and description Gareth! Best I have seen, you make it look easy! I wish you were local to L.A. The only suggestion I have is to maybe provide short description or indicators as to when it is time to replace the disa valve or throttle body. I have an issue where my 2003 530i goes into 'fail safe' mode randomly and all signs and codes seem to point at the throttle body being the primary issue. I'm going to attempt to replace it but was wondering if it is best practice to also replace the disa valve while I'm at it? You FCP Euro sells parts/kits for these, correct? Thanks!

I agree. You should be fine driving it like it is for now. As long as the PCV isn't blowing oil straight into the cylinder head it likely won't be an issue. The only downside will be poor performance until its fixed. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask any other questions. - Gareth Foley

This was great, but wanted to add a couple of things I learned this weekend. When replacing the 6 rings on the upper breather spreader (or what ever it is), use a very fine needle nose pliers, pinch the ring to make it easy to grab then just fold it over the top, no scratching and very easy, had mine all off in 2 minutes. Lay it down on a bench or really smooth concrete, use 3 fingers around and just push down, again 2 more minutes and done. Next if you have that noise baffle unit...loose it by purchasing the new tube without the bottom port cause that thing is a pain in the @$$ going back in, your time must be worth something!!!! But most important, when you you are putting the new pcv in ...route your new hoses first then attach them...then screw it in place. I had to remove the insulator on mine or it just would not go in place and the small vacuum line also has to go inside of that insulation. any way, it come off really easy. dont know if i would have attempted this without this video. THX MUCH!!!!

In case somebody needs help to re-connect the electrical connector to the throttle body, make sure the part with two square holes on the connector can rotate freely while the base with all the wires does not move. Otherwise, you may be able to seat the connector to the throttle body but will NOT be able to tight the connection. my lesson learned after 1+ hour frustration.

Yes itwas. I notice my check engine light and it started running rough. But it had been five years since I changed my spark plugs so I changed them. Well, that did not fix the problem. So I bought a device to read the engine codes and it stated that the most likely problem was the PCV. That is when I watched this video. I learned of all the parts I should order to tackle this job.

I'm getting ready to do the CCV replacement on my 2000 E39 528i. But I was playing with the new vent hose that comes up to the spreader from the CCV. It looks like it's might be a real pain to get the fitting to engage and lock. Is it possible to install on CCV first then install and thread up through the intake? Great job on the video. Thanks for making it. I'm also getting ready to replace the OFH and my High Pressure Power Steering hose. How difficuilt is it to remove the banjo bolt the steer rack?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 10 жыл бұрын
I think what you're asking is hitting on the same problem we had. You have to get the valve in place and then attach the hose that goes up to the intake manifold. It has to snap into place and will require some finesse. If you have someone who can help you with smaller hands it will probably help. Hope that answers your question.

Great video! Great camera angles to show whats going on. Definitely the best one on this subject I've seen so far! ....one small question though.....at :32:49 in the video, one can clearly see that the lower DISA Valve bolt has been sheared off into the intake. How did you secure that fastener like that at :36:02 in the video? Other than giving you a hard time about that, I really enjoyed the DYI. Thanks!

On your 2004 325i there is a throttle position sensor. This is built into the throttle body and is not serviceable outside of replacing the throttle body. When replacing the throttle body it is required to also reset any adaptations stored in the DME from the previous faulty throttle body to ensure proper operation of the new part. Now this component is also sometimes confused with the accelerator pedal petentiometer which is also technically a TPS sensor. Similar situation there, the sensor is integrated inside the accelerator pedal assembly and cannot be serviced without replacing the entire assembly.
@jafarmerilien
@jafarmerilien 7 жыл бұрын
is there a way to test the throttle body sensor just to make sure it works and also do you think if I were to replace the TPS sensor and the accelerator pedal assembly and the Throttle body and reset everything that it might work?

Hey thanks for the detailed video. I'm going to order the parts this week. Hey question. My 2000 E39 528i is showing the dreaded EML and brake light. When it did this before I has the throttle body change and it solved the problem. I just did VANOS seals last week and an intermittent EML and brake light popped up after installing the VANOS. I think I may have cracked the crank case hose due to it being brittle. Can vacuum leaks cause a EML code?

It's possible that a vacuum leak can cause an EML light. Generally speaking, vacuum leaks in the intake side of the engine will cause lean running conditions and misfires. Generally, these conditions will cause an SES light but the EML light can be triggered by just about anything. I would have the codes read for the EML light with an advanced diag tool that can read BMW error codes (not an OBDII scanner). It's much easier to trace down the problem knowing exactly which codes are being triggered.

Is this a E36? Because E46 does not seem to have that think vacuum line on the CCV?

Hi Asher, The ICV can be really tricky to push back in. In the past I have had problems myself. The grommet in particular is what makes it so difficult. One thing that can aid in helping you get the valve back in the grommet is some silicone spray. It should slide in fairly easy once it has been lubricated. What's nice about the silicone spray is you don't have to worry about it damaging the grommet or valve.
