I bought my R1200c in 2002 and still have it. It is a fantastic motorcycle. Great balance, cruises at 80mph all day long with a load of torque. No, it's not a crotch rocket but it has plenty of great performance. The Boxer engine only gets smoother the more miles you put on it. I have very little vibration in my mirrors and no. In the beginning yeah, it was a shaker, but it has really smoothed out. I keep the throttle bodies in sync and give it regular oil changes. If you are looking to buy one don't be afraid. It's a solid machine if you maintain it...Like all things mechanical.

I purchased a 2004 r1200c 2 years ago! It is the best bike I've ever owned. It has ABS, heated grips, and matching locks for the bags. The fact you cruise at 75-80 mph at 3,500 rpm is very calming for a ride. My last bike had rpms in a much higher range on the highway and it was grating to ride for any long distances. I looked for a bigger rear seat, since I saw a number of photos of r1200c with a bigger rear seat and backrest for the passenger. I was unable to find one anywhere. but, I found a r1200CL (the larger touring one) for $4,500 and got that. Now, I have 2 r1200 bikes! One cruiser and one tourer!

I absolutely adore my 2001 R1200C Montana. Yes, the instrumentation is a bit weird and dysfunctional; the ABS system is notoriously always broken and is prohibitively expensive to fix; on mine you don't even get the cool backrest. BUT it is exceptionally comfortable for both city use and longer rides, it handles like you would expect from a BMW, and while it isn't super-powerful it accelerates well and cruises pleasantly at 70mph. It manages to remain lighter and more nimble than the big touring bikes from BMW and others, yet provides far more performance than the typical American cruiser. Oh, and it also has a low seat height - comforting to someone like me with a short inseam. I am tempted to buy another one and store it against the eventuality of mine wearing out.

I live in europe and own one for ten years now, along with two other boxer BMWs. I think it is not for everyone. I have put about 70t kilometers on it, and it works like a clock. Every detail on the bike is amazing, no cheap materials were used. This is a motorcycle for BMW fans, that mostly older men apreciate and some younger as well. I guess it is because BMW changed its image in past 20 or so years, from 'the quiet sounding bike that will not break down and is easy to maintain' to 'the best selling exclusive enduro bike in the world', which is also ok.

I really miss my R1200C - but when some bearings starting making a whining noise, the price that the dealer quoted to effect the repair was eye watering. Luckily I managed to find an independent shop who fixed it - still expensive but within reach. Once fixed, and being completely useless when it comes to doing anything mechanical, I sold it super cheap. Still miss that bike and have been tempted to buy it back but I don't have the skills nor the pocket to maintain it.

Best description of this bike ever, yes it really is a mixture of a Cruiser and a normal bike!! You really should write for mainstream magazines. I was going to say....If it's good enough for James Bond 007 it's good enough for me...............but it isn't. As you say an easy bike to ride, painfully slow and and unless kept spotlessly clean they get shabby quickly. If they break or need a clutch, like all BMW shaft-drive Boxers repair bills are HUGE. Quirky looks but deserve a place in history as, in my opinion, it is the forerunner of the R1200R, one of my favourite BMW's, and I only like that and the K1300R LOL!
