William is absolutely right. I own 5 monolevers and all of the ones with a grey ignition coil gave me trouble eventually. One caused the engine to misfire when driving in the rain, the other one melted and resin was coming out of it when driving at 100F. It then shortened leaving me stranded thousands of miles from home in the middle of nowhere in Utah (real bad). The last one lead to bad starting behavior of the bike and had cracks all over it when i exchanged. Throw them out before you get in trouble. The BOSCH successor-replacement works just fine. It has worked for me for thousands of miles with no issue.

Wow, luckily I was never stranded with the failure but I figured that someone must have been. Yeah, best to proactively get rid of the old style!

That was a very good video, William. Thank you. I especially liked the ingenious use of the connector block to 'record' the correct connections. 👍

Thank you for continuing to put these videos out! I’ve been slowly trying to restore the R90 my father handed down to me and these videos have been life-savers!

Good tip with the ignition coil change! I ended up stranded and did experience poor running before full stop...

Good one William - I like the use of the terminal strip as a test & setup aid and then as a colour guide. Very clever. You also did a fine job describing the process of tinning with solder. Soldering is SOOOOO easy but many people blob the solder on like glue and that is completely wrong. Heat the wire and introduce the solder onto the hot wire - just as you instructed.

"bundled" Brown (gnd): keep in mind that the actual return lead to ground point should equal/exceed the total wire gauge tied together... FWIW... Ground is equally as important as the "hot" side (them electrons still gotta git/go somewhere)

Another great and helpful video for the community. Thank you! One question I've had is that the airheads that I've owned all had the terminal block with two fuses. What do you do about those?
@johnhopkins62603 жыл бұрын
For some, it may prove easier to wire the headlight bucket first, then pull wires through... to length (where there may be more room to work, and no need to hunch over the front wheel as long)

"flat connectors' aka FASTON® connectors/housings. FWIW there are special extractor tools for round/flat connectors (try AMP/TYCO/Bosch)

Grey ignition coil: generally runs ok... til you stop at a gas station, to escape pouring rain... no start (moisture through cracks)... or push beemer home, or order coffee, hope warmth dries coil... just hope valeo starter magnets didn't come unglued

Thanks so much for these informative videos. I recently purchased a ''81 R80G/S that hasn't run in at least 25 yrs. It has the coil you mentioned so I will be replacing that. It was mysteriously missing the voltage regulator. Two questions. There are four brown wires going to one ring connector and another brown wire going to another ring connector. They are close to the voltage regulator. Is it stock for these to be attached to the bike using the volt reg bracket. Also, there are only two relays behind this but your setup has an additional green regulator. Is it stock for the G/S not to have the green relay? Thanks again for producing the great video series

Hey R Sum . Sorry for the late reply. The brown wires with the ring connectors are ground. These attach to the frame and with M6 bolts that attach the ignition control unit heat sink. Usually the voltage regulator has a plastic housing, so that’s not a good ground. The coil is another place for a good ground connection. The green relay is typically the turn signal relay on those bikes. The other two are the starter relay and the headlight relay.

Thanks for the Great videos William! Do you have and experience with Motogadget M-units or Ricks motoelectric rectifier/regulator units?
@boxer2valve4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm glad that you like the videos. I have no experience with the Motogadget personally, but my Son Edward has installed many. Give him a call if you need some advice with that. It looks great and seems to work very well but maybe I'm too old....
