Really interesting project, the new speedo looks great but what have you done about the GEN light, isn't it needed for the charging system to work ?
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
On my brother´s 1986 R65 we had to keep the GEN light in the circuit yes, we mounted it close to the diode board for easy access. On mine the voltage climbs nicely to 13-14V when going up in revs, so seems to work without the GEN light.

At about 3:00 you use some connectors to join wires together. The video speeds up - but it looks as though these joins are pre-insulated. Can you tell me what this product is called - and where I could get some?
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
The speedometer has a wiring loom as you can see on its manual, they include the other end of their connectors and include a bit of cable. So for every cable coming out of the speedo you get an extension part already fitted with those bullet connectors. I cut them down because they were very long, and then soldered the extension wires to the corresponding BMW wires, that way I can disconnect them but they can easily be reconnected because they all have the right color matched with the Daytona.
@dannyaustin844 жыл бұрын
great video! Did you remove the original loom and make your own? I've changed my headlight for a much smaller one and am attempting to move the little fuse board to the top of the airbox for the time being... bit of a pain but I didn't dare pull the entire thing out
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No the original loom is still there, connectors are simply soldered on the original wiring for both lights and instruments. The cable going to the original instruments had to be cut though, so no turning back now! Fuses are above the airbox in my case, so no need for changes. If I had the budget I'd have preferred to install a full motogadget wiring loom, so maybe that's an upgrade in a couple of years.
@dannyaustin844 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasC thanks for the reply. Yes that's my plan also. Mechanical build this year and then tear down next year. Motogadget is £££ pricey but the job it does is very impressive.

Hey brother I have a question. I bought the same Daytona velona speedometer. Follow a nearly identical wiring to yours and everything works fine beside my RPM. It isn’t jumping all over the place. Do you by chance remember which wire you connect the rpm pulse to? According to the manual it’s should be going to 15 (positive) on the ignition coil tower.

Hey Thomas thanks for making the video. I have a 1974 R75/6 and i'm planning to install the same Daytona Speedo. I already bought the pulse converter too. Do I need an LED relay to make the light in the new speedo work? Or will it power up fine without it if I am not upgrading other lights to LED. As well do the wires from the speedo plug into the bike from the headlight or under the tank at the relay box? I'm a electrical newbie, so thank you!

I was thinking of installing a Dayton Velona 80W on my R45 (1979). I do not have any soldering skill though. Do you think it would be feasible without soldering ?
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
You will need to cut cables, strip them and put connectors on them. There are a lot of video´s on how to solder and an iron doesn´t cost that much, I´d say it´s the perfect time to learn it :-) A soldering iron is a good tool to have and you´ll need it more than you think
@spycon694 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasC Thanks for your message. I do have a soldering iron, however i never used it before so i guess its time to get some lessons :). So u think connecting the daytona gauge wont be much trouble ? I do also have the haynes manual. I guess i have to connect the daytona in-between the existing connections right ? Your project is awesome by the way. You should get another one going ! u got a talent there !!

At 02:11 there is a black module. Does this included in the Daytona kit or you bought it yourself ?
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
@@spycon69 that´s the original BMW connector that plugs into the original speedo. It´s that one that you need to cut off and then connect all separate wires to the appropriate wires of the Daytona.

Hi Thomas, I have the Haynes manual and diagram allready, but where did you find the additional diagram at 2:00? I would love a copy BR Chris from DK
@ThomasC3 жыл бұрын
Hi, It was a loose paper that the previous owner left inside the Haynes manual, so I didn't have to look very far :-) The stamp across the page says 2-ventiler . de, so you could try to find it there. If you put the video in 4K and fullscreen you could probably just take a screenshot of 2:02, I think it's all visible there. Good luck!
@christoffermuhlbach16993 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasC Hi Thomas, Appreciate the reply. Worked perfectly with the 4K option.. I got by speedo wired up now thanks to you :) I can read in the comments that you used a resistor for the GEN light on you brothers bike. What was the resistor in OHM you used. One last question would be that you leave the port no 8 empty which is the "notausschalter"/emergency switch according to the diagram. What did you do with that? Thanks a ton. BR Chris
@ThomasC3 жыл бұрын
@@christoffermuhlbach1699 We just took the original BMW speedo apart and took the GEN lamp out, then we traced its wire all the way back to the diode board and shortened evertyhing so the light would fit inside that front compartment. Plenty of insulation around it and a zip-tie to hold it in place, works perfectly. I always put the Voltage on my display so I can keep an eye on the battery and if it's charging or not. About the emergency switch I have no idea, it's too long ago :-) If it refers to the kill switch on the right hand side of the bars, it works fine without anything being connected to the speedo, as far as I know. Good luck with the rest of the build!

Hi Thomas, great job! just wondering ...have you put any resistor to compensate the missing charging light for the charging system? Thanks and keep it up!
@ThomasC3 жыл бұрын
I planned to do so, because I had to do that on my first build, but it charged fine without it so I left it like it was. On my brothers´ R65 we had to put one in there though, we managed to keep it compact and mounted it right next to the diode board.

Nice Job - used some ot the parts for my BMW R80. Did you have any issues with the new (LED?) indicators / lights and the resistors? And how did you solve the "issue" with the speedometer & light maschine (there has to go a resistor as well if you use LED lamp for the battery light..?! Really enjoyable video 👍
@ThomasC4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Indicators and lights worked perfectly, but you need a LED relay for the indicators. In my case I did not connect the wires of the charge indicator light, and when I rev the bike up the voltage goes nicely to 14V, which tells me charging works fine. In the case of my brother's R65 we had to include the original lightbulb in the circuit (but placed it in the front engine housing next to the diode board) for the system to start charging.

They sell a sensor that mounts near the transmission where the usual cable would mount for your speed. The rpm is linked to the cable cluster that also feeds the standard gauges, pretty straight forward once you identify all the cables.
