The S1000R is a road-focused weapon of a sportsbike that goes even harder than its S1000RR superbike cousin. It also packs pretty much every piece of rider assist and safety technology that BMW makes - plus one magical, tiny switch that we hope we see a LOT more of!
Test: Loz Blain. Cameras: Loz Blain, Chris Blain, Nick Lavars. Thanks to Bacchanae: / bacchanae

Torque is the name of the game. It's for this reason I love my Street Triple. So much more usable power for the street. It's hard for this dude to do a bad review. "The dogs bollocks" Aussies and Brits gotta love em.

***** The reference to torque and how an engine develops its power has nothing to do with "tank pulling" (when we're talking about motorcycles and or motorcycle racing) It DOES however have everything to do with how an engine develops it's power. Waiting for a motor to spool up to its power curve is kind of like watching a firework launch into the air .. nothing ….and the all of a sudden "boom" and it fizzles away. A motor that develops its power lower down in the rev range is more usable and frees up the rider from having to make frequent gear changes (Which btw equates to time lost albeit in 100th's of a secds but they all add up.)
@WheatMillington
@WheatMillington 10 жыл бұрын
People who talk about power in the "usable range" forget what the rest of the range is - the fun range. If all you're doing is commuting to work, then sure go for something with lots of power in the "usable range".
@ZoneTelevision
@ZoneTelevision 10 жыл бұрын
Chris Doms No one has forgot. It's just being able to use all that power isn't always convenient or safe... on public roads anyway.

This popped up 4 or 5 years after I first watched this - still have the 17 S1000R I bought, in part due to his video review and Baron vG’s “gizz” review of the bike. 47000km and it is still immense fun, and I test ride newer things and my ride home on my bike and the gains are not, in the real world, that material. Still a heck of a lot of fun. But that StreetFighter, or the Speed 1200, or the Tuono, or Beast 3.0 - n+1?

160hp in a bike that weighs less than 460 pounds and that's naked feels like a tornado on wheels. The fact that it's naked makes it feel even faster. I used to own an HP4 and now I have a S1000R no regets. I spend 97 percent of my riding on public roads just like everyone else better ergo's and yes CRUISE CONTROL!! Make life so much better without having to sacrifice much power. This bike is perfect I get more compliments with this bike not like it matters though.

What other bikes of this class have you reviewed? Which one of them would you pick if you could have only one bike?
@gizmag
@gizmag 8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan in the super naked class, the closest comparison is probably the KTM 1290 Superduke R. Vastly different bike. Have a look at that review. I think I'd take that just for the monster motor - 4th gear power-up wheelies are a bit special. But the electronics are annoying and there's no cruise. In the end I recently bought the bike I fell hardest for way back in 2011 - a Speed Triple R. But that's not as fast as either of these, it just seems to fit me better.

Craig Thomas that was my most of my short list (also had the GSXS1000) and I purchased the s1000r. Came down to what felt the best for me at the time, when I was a relatively low skilled rider. The BM just felt right. Coming around to upgrade time, 35,000 and 2 years later, and the new versions plus the Street Fighter are on the list, as is the R90. All of them are excellent bikes (not obviously ridden the Street Fighter but have ridden the V4S), and it will again come down to what feels best. Ride them all on extended rides where you normally ride

@gizmag
@gizmag 9 жыл бұрын
Just uploaded a video of the KTM: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKGXknyGfc6Mo7M Between these two bikes, the KTM has by far the more impressive motor - it wheelies in fourth gear, for god's sake - and yet it's also easier to ride and feels less snatchy and aggressive than the BMW. The S1000R has cruise control, which is sensational, plus the quick shift, it's more refined but if I'm choosing between the two, the KTM wins on its outrageous yet controllable engine.

I'm going with the SD1290, by a whisker. So easy to ride, so comfy, so powerful and the engine has mind-boggling grunt. The BMW is much better in terms of electronics, in fact I switch it all off on the KTM. And that's because it's just naughtier than the S1KR. Anyway, both are balltearers, whichever one you get you'll love it.

Criuse control is a complete waste of money unless you are doing big touring mileage
@mbal4052
@mbal4052 9 жыл бұрын
And why not do big mileage on this bike?
@bampie1
@bampie1 9 жыл бұрын
One major reason I would not consider buying this bike to do big mileage is the wind resistance. On my current bike I can quite happily cruise all day at 130mph a friend of mine has a naked and any more than a hour at 90mph and he either has to stop or slow down to 70mph. To my mind this bike is good for quick blasts or three/four hour trips max, however even with my bike I would never consider cruise control why sit in a queue of traffic even if it is doing the speed limit when bikes are made for making progress. I have or had cruise control on most of my cars and unless I am travelling through average speed camera areas or on the auto routes I never use it.
@gizmag
@gizmag 9 жыл бұрын
I totally, utterly disagree. It's at least an hour to the fun stuff in any direction where I live, cruise does wonders for your tired body on the way home when you've been going hard.

Good for you that you live in the middle of nowhere but there is no way I would ever consider cruise control and just sit there in the traffic I would sell my bike before that ever happened I assume you are from the USA where they believe HD's are good bikes say no more

I live in a flat city outside the USA that's not close to hills. And there's now cruise control on the S1000RR superbike, the XR, the Ducati Multistrada and several others. If you ride any distance, you're gonna have transport sections. Feel free not to use it.
