Quick anecdote from an engine book I've got. From an interview of a BMW F1 race team engine builder, they would go out to wrecking yards to find old clapped out sedans with the highest mileage they could find and pull the M10 blocks for cores. The thinking was that these engines with tons and tons of hours on the clock would have all the casting stresses out of them and would hold up to grenade-spec boost the best. Seeing as these cars were laying down 900 to 1500 horsepower with factory stock iron blocks and NOT blowing up they might have been on to something.

Great video. We still occasionally see E30 M3 track cars come through the shop with built 2.5 liter Evo engines and aftermarket engine management (to eliminate that horrible airflow meter from the stock setup) and they easily produce 275+ whp using race gas on the chassis dyno. That's incredibly impressive for an engine design whose genesis was nearly 40 years ago. Fully agree with naming this engine one of the all time greats.

I only got thru 100 comments, so I hope I’m not repeating. I started playing with BMWs in 1972 while working in a body shop that did the work for the first dealer in upstate NY....when they were”British Motor Works”. In 1982, I met Jim Rowe...founder of Metric Mechanic. Wow. 40 years of tireless R&D on BMW engines / trans/ diffs. Now that I’m retired, i fly out to MO ever 3 months to work in the shop and improve my knowledge and skills. I work for free room and board for the week. It doesn’t get any better than that! Very sad we didn't get this M3 in South Africa. We had to create our own homologation special, the 325is, with the Alpina 2.7 M20 engine. This was to compete against the South Africa only Opel Kadett Superboss with the Delta modified C20XE, stock with Getrag LSD gearbox amongst other thing. Also interesting is that South Africa also made a 333i with the M30 engine also helped build by Alpina. We also made the Opel Kadett 200ts with a C20LET and 6 sped LSD Getrag which debuted with 160kw (215hp) in 1994.

You can remove the flap MAF with a heated wire MAF. There is a product called a "MAF translator" which interprets data from a new heated wire sensor, then sends data to the ECU that is exactly like the flap MAF. Some call the OEM sensor a "VAF." It is good for a few horsepower by itself. I think some people mod their Datsun 280ZXT to accept a 300ZXT heated wire MAF for example. 23:14 There is another way. Have you heard of offset grinding? By grinding the crank throws off center and then welding them up, you can lengthen the stroke by a few millimeters. 29:00 Plus, with 10:5:1 or more of compression, you couldn't run much boost anyway. It would probably be required to buy lower compression pistons.

To be fair the BMW M1 was the first M car that started this lineage. Though arguably the 3.0 CSL was the first M car, despite not having an m badge. Then the M535i, the M 635 CSI, the M5, and then finally the e30 m3. Though iirc there was a updated m535i somewhere in there. Interesting also to see how much they experimented with M placement and the spacing before and after the numbers and letters

I have only had BMW E34 M5 3.8 with S38B38 engine. Stock power 340 hp and 400 nm torque naturally aspirated. It’s similar type motor as S14 just six cylinder inline with larger 50 mm ITB’s and larger valves and 90 mm stroke. It would be great if you could do a video of M88 / S38 type engines. M1 race cars had naturally aspirated six cylinder 3.5 liter motor versions with around 470-490 hp power output at very high rpm for inline six at that time.

I ended up purchasing 90 BMW 325 because of it. Completely rebuild the whole thing, sold it for cheap to a youth pastor that really wanted it. He then loaned it to a member from church and crash it 🤦🏻‍♂️. I wish I never sold it.

One small correction, it was the S88 engine in the M1, and M635csi. Unfortunately, my own M635csi needs an Electromotive system because the OE one has injector pulse issue we cannot figure out how to rectify. Other than that, your videos are excellent, certainly among the best, if not very best l've been fortunate to find on YT. As a former BMW mechanic and an instructor in a different field, l cannot praise them enough. Your English is also better than many native born Americans, and in these videos, perfect.

A side note about the M12 Formula 1 engine...BMW motorsport took the raw/basic blocks and left them outside to age/cure them..( before assembly of all the components )..It was found that exposure to the elements actually made the blocks harder...

Having driven a tuned s14 (I admit I didn't go over 7000rpm, I am to afraid of breaking something), I wouldn't want to own one. The car is amazing, but there is no point in having one if you don't rev it to moon, which with an engine worth 3 years of rent I wouldn't want to do to often. On top of that, the s14 is 3 times as much as an s54, imagine how much more fun you would have with an s54, knowing you have 2 more ready to drop in when you throw a rod!

Have you done anything on the first V8 BMW M5 engine the S62? I once had a 2002 M5 and what I did to spruce it up was re-flash the ECM, eliminate the screen and plastic grating inside the Mass Air Sensors as per Dinan's advice coupled with K&N air filters and install a stainless steel Borla Catback exhaust because BMW for some crazy reason crushed the exhaust pipes down to 50% in diameter right in front of the differential increasing the backpressure. I suspected they put these band aids on the car to limit the horsepower to 400 hp. I also replaced the dual mass flywheel with an aluminum 13.5 lb. flywheel and Kevlar high performance clutch. The engine revved like an air tool when I did that. With all of the resulting increase in power and response I had to send the pressure plate out to maximize the clamping force because it would slip under hard acceleration. The clutch and pressure plate is was a flaw in my opinion of the E39 M5. I also ran into issues with the differential as I had ripped the anemic brackets off that held the differential to the frame and had to reinforce the brackets, another flaw of the E39. All the fun occurred however when you pressed the DSC button disabling the traction control, the car would be all over the road in the first 3 gears. It was truly a sleeper if you didn't know what an M5 was.

I want to see a race between a track ready 1991 442 and a E30 M3 Evo1. They would be about the same weight, if the 442 were track prepped. Both, 2.3L Inline-4s with similar output. (S14 having the advantage, unless the W41 was slightly modified). They weren't at all competitors, but they're both unique in their own way. Moreover, a race between them would be equally unique and cool to see how the differnt approaches would compare on the track.

I think there is a way to get some High flow cats and some high flow mufflers and do a duel x pie side exit exhaust. I got a welder and some stainless steel pipes so I can fab it up. Plus it will look cool and probably have a better less annoying good flowing exhaust note with some good back pressure.

This is similar to the alpha II engines. Except the redline is I think 300 less and the alpha uses a single throttle body. Ive considerd spwapping the intake for a custom multie throttle body setup with the port injection

We have both M88/3 and a S14B25 (330HP but only for racing) as well as E21 with a turbocharged S14B23. I totally admit that turbocharging the engine wasn't a good idea but we needed more power to stay compatible against a 550 hp ford and a 2010 cup Porsche at hill climb races.

So true about people being disappointed by their dream car because they don't understand it and can't drive it properly. S85 has similar problem. I saw so much hate for it: it is bad at lows, it is overcomplicated, it is hard to maintain, BMW could go with supercharger or turbo to get same power or even more, etc. All that just shows that people don't make their homework and simply not ready to own cars like E60 M5 & E63 M6, yet they claim that BMW is a bad car manufacture after that and their Corolla is much better... Really sad story.
