When shopping or purchasing your new or used BMW with the S55. I can't stand when people say. Don't use kick down because of the crank hub could fail or don't floor it because of fear of the crank hub failing. This is a rare failure yet people are spending thousands of dollars in upgrading the crank hub bolt. This problem affect maybe 50-100 cars? Out of the thousands of vehicles are there. I'd say that's pretty good. There are lot more serious issues to worry about instead .99% chance this could go wrong. There isn't any link to amount of power or time this part could go bad since it doesn't know the difference between a stock car or tuned car. It's all based on engine timing. Maybe a few cars didn't get the right factory specs and with perfect scenario of high power and high traction, coupled with the abrupt shifting, maybe you would have an issue. But I wouldn't hold your breath. I say send it and enjoy it!

Man this video is right on time for me. Because I'm thinking of rewarding myself with an M4 and I started seeing all these crank hub issues like wtf. I had vanos issue with my E46 M3, wanted to get an E92 M3 butthe whole rod bearings/Tb actuators thing scared me away. so I ended up gettin a camaro ss. Now I decide on M4 and here comes this whole crank hub thing lol. Geez people just take stuff and run with it. And I don't track my cars or do too many upgrades outside of maybe an intake and exhausts and thats it. I'm glad I did find this video.

I think you are right on the money! Should the Crankhub be a supporting mod for 650+ WHP... YES. Is it a huge flaw ... no. We are spoiled in that these cars will make 700+ WHP, FBO, tuned on 🌽.... there is a point especially with a beast like a F8x that you start modding for reliability but that number is not at stock or stage 1. FYI, I was quoted $7800 with parts and tax here in Houston. I just laughed at them, lol. IF... I have an issue, $7800 is a good down payment on a new 911 or another M3/M4, S55 or newer.

Seems like the only time the crankhub should be considered is if you plan to make close to or upwards of 600hp orrrr if you have a model that has close to 100k miles on it then id consider it, because with the crankhub you get all your preventative maintenance done, you get the oil pan gasket done, valvecover gasket, coolant flush, and much much more, so that could make it well worth it if you plan to keep the car over 100k miles. By the time an S55 gets close to 80k-100k miles all that's gunna need to be done anyways due to seals having to many heat cycles & fluids being old. Hope this helps

I get so scared to downshift and sometimes just don't...I didn't wanna go stage 1 without doing it but this helps put me a little more at ease. Great to know your on stage 1 ! I might just do it. I strictly use the car just to get back and forth from work M-F and only use cruise control on those days. I only get on the car on the weekends and even that is only a sometimes, Plus when i do drive I'm not one to downshift to 2nd gear super high in the rpm, i always downshift late to help keep stress off the Crankhub & Engine so hopefully ill be okay on stage 1, pray for ya boy lol P.S. Yeah don’t be afraid to enjoy your car for what it was built for. The CH has been blown so far out of proportion I think most people is hearsay. Sure I know it can break, but if was fragile as it rumored, every M3/M4 out there that used kick down would be broken down on the side of the road. Not every owner is on the forum to know. Only the enthusiast who will shout at the tree tops how their car is broken. Adding stage 2 with E85. You’re making a lot of power. More that what the car is intended. Something has to give.

Thanks alot. I thought trough this problem the last months. I want to tune my M3 soon, the thing is - everybody is telling me i should get this done. I understand the problem here, but i think the majority of cars don´t have it. I think it doesnt brake not more often than - lets say - the turbochargers... But i did further research on bmw partnumbers, i found out that the N55 shares the same parts on the crank hub as the S55 - when you consider how much N55s were built i various types of vehicles (from 1 series to 7 series) and you dont really read a lot about issues on the crank hub. The other side is the forums - in the german forums you dont see a lot people with the problem. anybody is complaining about it, but nearly nobody experienced the issue, they "heard about a friend of the brother from the uncle" that this thing was broken on their car.

It’s not a wear/tear item. People are scared to use kick down because of this because 1 person used kick down and it happens to them. The common theme I see is stage 2 with E85 and a sticky tire. You’re pushing the limits of the motor and something has to go somewhere. I don’t think anyone full understands how or why it brakes. Stock enjoy your car Stage 1 enjoy your car Stage 2 and beyond. Proceed with caution.

My second F82 i ran stage two for a little while before getting the hub done. Mechanic was a close friend of mine and I saw the friction disk on stock hub and it was ripped in half and about to go any moment. I’m in a pretty big s55 group here and I know people who do everything wrong possible to spin hub and nothing happens. Friend of mine on just capture bolt was running full e using kickdown often even on stock charge pipes and never had an issue and did over 10k miles in a year. Lots of ppl do cbc and they are good some do nothing they are fine and some do hub. It would be great if there was just a straight answer. Just tuned my newer f82 on stock hub stage 2 and always worried it is gonna spin. Know tons of ppl who never had issues and sometimes ppl do. Just annoying situation. I will say when my last f82 was running 590whp on e85 it was very nice knowing my hub literally cannot spin. If you are the anxious type like me then get it done or you can hedge your bets. Take for what it is worth

I try not to worry about it. Most of the ones who spins just has to get the hub done and engine re timed. Now if people were replacing motors left and right. I’d be more concerned. They way I view crank hub is like taking cough medicine before you get sick.

It's just like the LS7s and the Valves dropping issue. It was a less than 1% chance of failures that got overblown on the forums everywhere. Drive the car man. I've worked for BMW for 9 years(6 at a dealership and 3 at a private shop) and i've only personally seen 3 crank hub failures and they were ALL driver issues or age and mileage. 2 manual cars money shifted, and a DCT that was just 150k+ miles.
@JP-eh8cy
@JP-eh8cy Жыл бұрын
The LS7 issue was indeed overblown and some people like myself found out that the cure is worse than the disease on "fixed" LS7 heads. The main reason I worried about the valve drop is the sudden failure and severity of consequence. But for the S55, even in the very unlikely case of a spun CH, the chances are overwhelmingly high that there is no engine damage. For that reason I think the CH is something to address only if it fails. Otherwise, enjoy.

For sure If It was a high km car I would do it when it needed gaskets and the like, or if doing big power mods. If it was an issue then it would be a recall, regardless of cost.

Nobody can say this isn't a problem unless you tune it or go over 600bhp or whatever. This can happen on standard cars too. The friction washers can separate and slip, which might not be fatal, and just throw the timing out for the valves a little, and can be repaired. But in some cases, the friction washer can snap, which chews everything up, and the timing goes so far out it causes fatal problems. Just like the E92 V8 bottom shells issue, this crank hub problem is not a case of if, more a case of when.

The most intresting thing with this is that people think it has with horsepower and tuning to do. I am amazed how many people don’t understand how this works technically. People should take a look and see how the engine is designed and think about where the force and power goes and think about what in the oil and cam drive system creates more resistance just because you tune the car. Peolpe need to learn how these engines work and stop believe in everything they read and what other people say.

Whilst I agree with using the car and kickdown....I didn't pay that much for my car not to use it...I don't think you fully understand the issue. It is not the bolt coming loose or undoing in isolation that causes the problem. It is a friction washes that breaks down allowing movement, play and potentially then the bolt working loose. This is why the fix is a 📌 crankhub. People who just do a capture plate on it's own may as well just set 🔥 to their cash as it will not prevent the potential issue. In the UK it costs about £1800 to get the crankhub fix and when my BMW Warranty is up I will give it serious consideration as, however unlikely it may be, it may just cause the timing to go out if you are lucky, if not then your whole engine could be toast.

I thought so too. Now I'm in a really tough spot. I'm on my 2nd F82. I had a 2016 M4 Manual, Stage 2 + 93oct OTS MHD tune and downpipes. No problems after 18 months. Then I bought my 2019 M4 CS last February with 15k miles. Put the same tune on it at 25k miles. I always manually shift. NEVER kickdown. I really don't drive it really hard. Well a few weeks ago I did 2 back to back 40-150mph pulls messing around with a friends redeye Hellcat. Manual shifting. 2nd pull felt like premature heat soak. It didn't pull right. I let off the gas and bam I get the dreaded light from hell. Car still runs just in limp mode. So motor is ok. But I will tell anyone how much I wish I would have done the preventative fix. I thought it was a super rare thing too. I have 2 other friends. All 3 of us have similar mods. 2 of us have spun a hub. Well other spun hub guy was on E85. 41k miles and it spun. Shouldn't down play it so much. Something is gonna break? On the forums 95% of the time someone has serious engine failure it's the Crankhub. It's a lot more cars than you think. 6 people? I personally know 2. It's ridiculous how much BMW screwed this up. They really need to address it. Been a more than a few stock cars spin the hub. Don't worry about it like I didn't but if it spins cross your fingers the valves don't high five the pistons because you might have to set it on fire. Thankfully more often than not the motor is fine. Which is crazy for a interference motor.

A large portion of these cars have either come to the end of the warranty period or are heading towards it. The crank hub issue doesn’t matter if you drive hard or drive like grandma. It doesn’t matter how many or how few miles you have on the car. It’s just luck of the draw. If it’s gonna happen then it will. If you want the piece of mind of not having to worry about it then suck it up and pay the couple grand to have a new one installed. It’s a crap shoot. You shouldn’t worry about it and there’s nothing you can do other than swapping out the old one.
@MrLIVELINESOLUTIONS
@MrLIVELINESOLUTIONS Жыл бұрын
Analyzing this issue from an engineering point of view, I don't see how higher power than stock can contribute to the failures. If you think about it, the acceleration force (likelihood of the crankhub friction surfaces between the sprockets slipping) on the crankhub is no different in 2nd gear on a 600hp car than 1st gear in a stock 400hp car. It's not under more load at higher gears like a clutch or other drivetrain components. So if you have a stock vehicle and you rip around in 1st or 2nd gears, it is no *harder* on the crankhub than a tuned vehicle ripping around in 2nd or 3rd gear. Prove me wrong? Acceleration is not different. The owner of the shop that does hundreds of crankhubs did a complete DIY crankhub replacement video and says the crankhubs spin because the bolt loosens over time (in some cases). If the cause of the SCH is from the bolt loosening after a while, you can do the crank bolt capture plate to keep the bolt from loosening and keep the friction plates together. That's a $100 part and can be easily done in your driveway in an hour. I agree the SCH issue is blown way out of proportion and doesn't make sense from a tuned engine perspective, lets say under 600hp.
@cwx8
@cwx8 2 жыл бұрын
I dunno. I struggle with this. The problem here is the friction surface. It's basically sandpaper and won't last forever. High levels of torque--not necessarily tuned but let's say a redline shift at high altitude--can wear down that friction surface in the hub assembly itself. It's a matter of time. Not necessarily that your motor will go, but for sure your timing can get thrown off given the two gears that are on either side of the hub. The more torque you put through it, theoretically the worse it would get. Stage 1 and up, I'd replace it personally but it could presumably fail at stock conditions as well. It's just sort of a dumb design that baffles imagination. I recommend you actually try to get your hands on one to see how it works.

I just want to say I appreciate the video. As hostile as some folks get over this “issue”, I honestly expected to get down to the comments, and see people lighting you up over your views on this. I literally JUST purchased a 2016 M3 yesterday. It has 49k miles on it. I’ve been agonizing over this crank hub deal for the last 24 hours. I’ve literally been scared to wind this sucker out to redline as if it’s a ticking time bomb- and hey maybe it is, but it also may be perfectly fine, and I don’t want to not enjoy my “new to me” M3. I’ve had BMWs in the past, but never a full fat M car, and I can’t explain how excited I am to finally own this vehicle. You video has made me feel a lot better about the whole thing. Not saying I agree or disagree with it being an “issue”, but regardless of how widespread it is, your point about enjoying the car is 100% spot on. There is just no way after spending $50k on a car, I’m going to drop another $3k-5k on “fixing” something that may or may not ever be a problem. I think I will however pick up the Crank Bolt Capture plate, and do that install myself. It’s $100, so incredibly cheap relatively speaking, and it’s something I can install myself in an afternoon. Now if you hear the die-hards talk about it, they would say this isn’t the actual fix, and again maybe they are right, but I just refuse to drop the kind of money required to do the “full fix”. If I spin the damn thing, then I’ll pony up at that point to fix whatever it breaks, or replace the engine if necessary- until then I’m going to enjoy this car, and drive it like I stole it. By the way- gorgeous color on your car. I wish I could have found a YMB F80. Mine is Tanzanite Blue, which is still really nice looking, but it doesn’t hit quite like that YMB. 🔥

The only real way to know whether it's worth it or not is to get reliable data on how many have actually failed. One big indicator would be the number of new engines fitted by BMW under warranty as a result of the crank hub. IMO, if enough were wereplaced, BMW would soon issue a recall as a new crank hub is a lot cheaper than a new engine.

I think a lot of it is stereotypes but the cost is expensive to maintain. I believe that can handle the power and abuse but I personally wouldn’t own one simply because of the cost of what’s is basically a “supercar” engine. The SMG pump is also a known failure point with those cars but how many exactly and from what I remember the cost of wasn’t astronomically high. Aside from the powertrain, everything else is typical BMW. I test drove a few and even nearly purchased one that was in the 25k price range but I had fear and couldn’t pull the trigger.

@eddiemcars yeah, well said. I had been seriously thinking about one for thr past year, but until recently, i hadnt fully interrogated everything i should need to know about it. Obviously the rod bearings is probs the most well known fail point responsible for most peoples fear to buy. But i recently learned that, as you say, the smg pump, smg gearbox in general, throttle actuators etc are all things that fail on this model moreso than others. I wanted one so bad, but instead, in the next couple months ive decided to upgrade to a f10 m5 instead. I currently have an e60 530i you see, and enjoyed the styling of it, hence the interest in the e60m5, (not to mention the power increase), but after a lot of thought, i think owning that car would be a singularity, with respect to my wallet doing nothing but feeding it. Sorry to bring up an old video. I bought my 17' F80 comp back in 2020 with 21k miles and whenever I buy a performance car, especially a used one, the first things that go through my mind are "what are the common issues both catastrophic and non-catastrophic?" And "did the previous owner beat the crap out of it"(which honestly is hard to know). I've been reading about sch for over a year now on the forums (mostly old threads) I guess trying to decide how big of an issue this really is. I've come to the following conclusions: #1 forum members represent a small percentage of ALL owners, so figure 20%(ballpark, may be much less). Out of that percentage, an even smaller percent have had sch and have posted about it. That tells me an even smaller percentage of owners overall have had the issue. #2 The running theme I'VE seen on the forums is cars with sch are usually modified and seeing over 600whp... there ARE those who were stock or lightly modified that still had it happen but again, even smaller percentage than in #1. #3 It still worries me BUT not to the point that I'm gonna do a full Crank Hub. At least not yet. From what I've read cbc no hub you can still "possibly" spin the hub(usually very high HP cars). Crank hub no capture cars have STILL spun the hub(again high HP). Crank hub and Capture so far, again from what I've read, no failures at all... so both solutions virtually eliminates the risk/problem. With that being said, my local shop has stated that they have multiple high hp cars with only a CBC running hard with no issues. My PERSONAL plan is to go mmmmmmaybe stage 2 (BM3 stg 2, Down pipes/exhaust, etc. No upgraded turbos) so for the peace of mind, I've settled on a capture. At least with that I'll have enough peace of mind that i can upgrade to where I want to be with no issues. Again just MY opinion. As you've stated, plan on going big HP? Over 600? Get the complete solution. Plan on staying close to stock or about 500? You don't necessarily HAVE to do a hub or capture, but I personally would do a capture. It's very inexpensive compared to the hub and will give you at least SOME peace of mind to drive the car as hard as you want.

VERY very few have elaborated as far as mods, HP, what exactly they were doing. And even then, as you said, how many are truly being honest about how they were driving? @@eddiemcars Yeah, stock I don't think it's gonna happen or even stage 1. I'm on my second straight 6 BMW, they make solid engine.

Eventually, it will spin. I used to preach the same thing and ran a tune for 2 years no issue until one day, when I was casually driving with my son, it span. Thought it couldn’t happen to me after preaching the same story but mine gave out

Well if it spins, then I’ll look into a upgrade for the hub!

Sorry man, I think that you don’t know what you are talking about till it happens to you and you bend all your valves. Talking from experience :)

I haven't heard of any F8X’s that bent valves from the result of a crank hub. You would be the first. But I believe it's an unnecessary repair for stock or lightly modded cars. Some owners are afraid of using kick down or even go WOT at all.

@@eddiemcars bent valves are common with sch. many have had sch. so if ur doing anything stage 2 or higher, crankhub is a must have

Unless the s55 is a non interference engine there is no way it will not bend the valves. N54 is an interference engine and when I spun my hub I bent quite a few valves. S55 is a flawed crankhub design just like n54 and n55 for mild power and reliability. Pinning the hub is just the smartest thing to do when chasing big power since its a known issue. There is a pattern to hubs spinning I believe as well from what I've seen

I agree with your logic, it’s not as common as people make out; but Christ alive, please don’t take up a career in engineering, your explanations were horrendous. 😂
