A video demonstration showing the proper procedure to re-torque the cylinder heads during a 600 mile service on an R1200C. Also applies to R850, R1100 and R1150 model BMW motorcycles.

I've been using the same 3 Snap-On torque wrenches for 15 years. They are always returned to the minimum setting after each use and have never been re-calibrated. If the calibration were off I'd feel it. Thank you, Chris

Excellent video as always. Thanks for showing the small details and also the procedure for the angle torque as it's not something I'd ever seen before. Keep up the great work on the videos!!!

Recent convert to BMW twins with the purchase of a 2006 1200GS in July. As a shade tree (actually, air conditioned garage) mechanic, I like to do as much of my own work as possible so this video is exactly what I was looking for. I share your use of the mechanic's "language" as well... Thanks!

Hi, the width is irrelevant but since you've asked they are 13 mm wide. Exhaust (Yellow) is 0.30 mm + intake (White) is 0.15 mm.

The RT can be a great bike, especially the R1150RT if the clutch issue is corrected, the rear drive properly shimmed and the goofy servo brakes eliminated. Good luck with your search, Chris

The R1200C is the same basically except for clutch replacement and clutch fluid changes. See 'BMW Service - R1200C Clutch Replacement 'How-To' video teaser' for a taste of the 4 hour 'How-To' video that I am finishing now.

7 - 115 nm is sufficient. Not more than $100 generally unless you step into the Snap-On truck and leave with an arm-full of tools. Oh, the pain!

Chris, thank you very much for posting this. This is very informative and I have to admit, quite entertaining (I'm also from the northeast and appreciate your 'shop language' :) ). This is exactly the kind of shop I wish I had down south. One question I have is how exactly do you determine TDC on an R1200C?

Thanks helmet165. I don;t service the Hexhead models so, unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you. Go to www.ADVrider.com and find the section called GSpot. The answer will be there. Use the search feature. Good luck and thank you for watching. There will be more videos coming soon. Thanks, Chris

Chris Harris Thanks for the response, I meant how did you get TDC on the R1200C in the video above.

Ah, sorry. You place the transmission in top gear, remove both spark plugs and the rubber inspection window (found on the right side of the crankcase). While watching the inspection window with a flashlight turn the rear wheel in the normal direction of rotation until you see a tab that reads 'Z'. Proceed a tiny bit further with the rotation of the rear wheel until you see a tab that reads 'S - OT'. Stop there. Remove both valve covers if you have not done so already. Feel the rocker arms looking for the cylinder that has loose rocker arms. This is the cylinder that you will adjust the valves on first. After you are done you rotate the rear wheel until the crankshaft has travelled 360 degrees and reads 'S - OT' again. Make sure that the rocker arms on the cylinder that you have not yet adjusted are now loose. If they are tight then you accidentally went 720 degrees and you will need to rotate the crankshaft an additional 360 degrees to adjust the untouched as of yet valves. Do NOT rotate the rear wheel backwards if you roll past the timing mark accidentally as even a little rearward motion will cause your valve adjustment to be incorrect due to the slop in the cam chain especially on an Oilhead with the original design cam chain tensioner. Good luck, Chris.

Chris Harris Great, I'm going to be doing mine shortly and that information and this video give me the confidence to do it myself. Thank you very much for the information and for posting this video!! Much appreciated!!!

Chris, I am buying a metric torque wrench and I was wondering if you could advise me on the torque range in Nm that would eventually be required by my 1998 BMW R1200C Classic. Would a 7-115Nm be OK? How about 28-210Nm?

Hi!, I've noticed from previous videos that during valve adjustment, you view an indication hole on the Rt side of the bike looking for a "TDC" (I think that's the reading you're looking for; which you also mention once you finish w/ the valve adjustment) as the bike is placed in "N" and the rear wheel is rotated 360-degrees, did you look for the "TDC" reading before doing the Lt valve adjustment? Why are we doing this, looking for the "TDC"? 2- During angle torque, is it imperative to use it when it's pretty easy to eyeball 180-degrees? Thanks

+Phill B 'OT' in the window means one or the other cylinder is at Top Dead Center. Determine which cylinder, adjust, rotate 360 degrees with transmission in top gear until 'OT' appears again and verify that the other cylinder is at TDC and adjust. Eyeballing the angle torque procedure depends on the guy holding the wrench. I don't gamble. Good luck.

Hello and thank you. There is a lot of music during the 4 hours of filming. We 'creators' can not have music that is not KZbin approved or we are penalized so I never released the clutch replacement video. Send an e-mail to NHBMWshop@gmail.com and I'll see what I can do for you. Chris

Hi Chris, Hope your recovery has gone well. I had replaced my R head gasket last fall(leaking) 128,000 miles. Everything is good now, no leaks. I've got about 600 miles on it now. Should I do the angle re-torque or skip it? Jeff up in Minnesota 763-213-7238
