Also one more tip for ABS1 and ABS2 - You can put an oscilloscope or a LED+resistor(8k+) (EDIT: I use a ~50k resistor - a dim LED, but it works) setup (Don't use a lower resistance, or 12V bulbs - too much current) across that middle pin and battery ground to read the fault codes - the 'code' is basically the number of blinks you get between long pauses. For example, my K bike blinked 5 times, stopped blinking for ~6 seconds, blinked 5 times and so on. 5 blinks is code for low battery - I charged it up, cleared the code and my ABS works since. You can google the codes, but for completion's sake I'll just copy some here: 1 No response from Front pressure modulator 2 No response from Rear pressure modulator 3 Open circuit between the brain and Front speed sensor 4 Open circuit between the brain and Rear speed sensor 5 Low battery voltage 6 Defective ABS relay (weak battery can cause this error) 7 Internal brain defective (weak battery can cause this error) 8 Front and/or Rear Speed sensor gap incorrect 9 ? Is reported to happen, but it's unknown 16 Failed plunger test, persistent

When I bought my used K1100 LTA, I had to constantly clear an ABS fault, until I got around to replacing the aged rubber brake lines with new stainless steel lines. It was the rear line that was at fault.

Someone apparently did not know what it was and cut it off! No need to 'hook it back up' as it is a dead end connector. Just use the brown wire to ground for 10 seconds and clear the fault. Good luck, Chris

I just cleared my ABS fault on R1100R OK. When get up to speed the ABS makes the clunk noise. Unfortunately right after the clunk noise, I get the ABS fault again. I'm planning on send to ABS unit to Module Master. They charge $350 to rebuild it. While I got the ABS unit removed, I will also replace the alternator. The R1100R has a 50 Amp BOSCH. I will upgrade to the 60 Amp that came with the R1150R with BOSCH generic.

Hello Chris , i have a bmw r850rt i have tried your reset , firts time worked perfctly , but Next day when i moved the bike, It sounds the clunk of testing but lights flashes alternatley , i stopped the bike do the reset lights ok. But when i started the run sound the Buzz of the test but lights alternate. Any idea what can It be? I can Make the reset but as soon as i ride lights ,flashes alternate. Any sugestión for the wire? Hi Chris, I have a question if that is ok. I am currently re-installing ABS onto my 1991 K100 RS 16V. I brought the hard lines online and have three of them, Two long and one short. As far as I can tell to far of the two long lines one is shorter than the other and has a wider thread at one end. I think this is the line that goes from the modulator to the caliper. The other long line is therefore for the line to the brake lever. The third short, curved one seems to be an extension for the line to the caliper. I am having a little trouble working out the exact routing of the that pipe so I can connect it right. I have searched but can't find any photos on line. Can you tell me how I should route the lines? I have a 1993 BMW K1100LT with ABS. I took it to a service center here in Germany, and they pointed out a cable on the right side of the bike that is cut. It has a brown (ground) and green wire. It's been neatly cut and wrapped off with electrical tape. I was thinking of hooking it back up and seeing if I could get the ABS fault to clear using your procedure here, but I thought I'd ask if you can think of any reason why someone would cut the system like this? Any chance it's going to blowup

Hi Chris, thanks for this. I have a question. My ABS lights on r1100gs flashes in sync and doesn't go off after riding. It just keeps blinking. The BMW service says the pumps and sensors are working normally and the fluids have been renewed. They don't know what to do now. Do you have any suggestions? Battery is new too. Chris, I have a 96 R1100GS, When it starts riding, the back brake pedal gets really hard and the ABS unit continue to make weird noises as when it engages , clicks and so on, after a few miles it disconnects, blinks go off and the back pedal releases and lets you brake. with no ABS of course. I have a 96 R1100 RT, when I get an ABS fault from when it doesn't engage, I simply turn off the ignition, wait about 2 seconds and turn it back on, ride a few feet up to speed, I will hear it engage, sort of a slight grinding sound. I assume that is normal. Then all is fine.

What you are experiencing is a common fault caused by low battery voltage. The 'grinding' noise you hear are the two electro-magnets in the ABS pump activating at 2.5 miles per hour. This noise can be heard while motoring along and also when riding over sharp edged bumps. Take care, Chris

No clue, that's much too 'new' for me. Traditionally, BMW motorcycles used brown for earth/ground. What happened after the car division had a few years of free reign... I'd be a fool to speculate. Good luck.

Chris I have 2005 BMW 1150 RT just replaced the brakes, did not know what I was doing and bled the rear brakes wrong. I'm sure i pumped air in the system. After research I now know how to properly bleed them. Do I have to take it to a dealer to reset the ABS system so the ABS light will go out? It doesn't have the ABS button on it. Thanks!

That could be a non-ABS model. Does it have wheel sensors? If not, it is likely a non-ABS model. That means less weight and less headaches, enjoy!

Dispose of the servo brake unit and you will likely never see the brake failure light again!

I have a 93 1150 GS 1150 R Adventure. Its been in store for a couple of years and now trying to start it I have fuel starvation troubles....I am pretty sure!! Is it straight forward to remove the injectors to have them cleaned and in so doing will fuel flow to prove the lines are not clogged too?

Doubtful that your injectors are blocked/clogged. It is probable that the fuel pump has failed or is weak. Can you hear the fuel pump? If so, Install a fuel pressure gauge in-line near the fuel hose connections and see if the pressure is between 35 - 50 psi. Happy New Year, CHris

I do not really understand what slit (circle) and what should it be ?? Maybe you'll throw in a photo Tomasz B, 12 volt Battery: Test voltage before starting the machine. If voltage is below 13,0 volts you will get an ABS failure at engine start up[ most times. Wheel speed sensors: Measure the gap between sensor and sensor ring on both wheels. Too far or close will cause ABS faults. ABS Computer: Could be defective. Swap with a different one from same model machine for a test but you will need to reset the ABS of course. Was hoping someone with some Know how could offer me input....I've got an 1150RT '04. Washed the bike and the next ride the ABS wouldn't operate with the front brakes. Quick flashing warning light. Went for a short ride and the rear brake works, but not the front brake until after the rear is applied. Which then the front brakes will work. Both having the servo function. But when fully applying either brake they will release then kick in, over and over again. Rolling several yards before engaging once again. I replaced rear pads, front are at 60%. bled and replaced all fluid. **No, I didn't use a pressure washer to wash the bike. The servo works intermittently, I'm hoping and guessing it's a switch or wheel sensor.

Chris Anderson, the servo brake system is not reliable. I eliminate them reverting back to non-power assisted conventional brakes. Your bikes symptoms can come from a wet ignition switch or even a wet brake light switch. Dry with compressed air after washing. I wish you luck, Chris

Chris Anderson Hej Chris, I've the same problem, after new battery the light abs light keeps blinking. First there is no reaction from the abs trying to brake with the front. Only when the rear is pressed, the abs starts zooming and the front brake can brake with abs. Would you like to share how you fixed this? Thanks in advance!
