Interesting! Yes I've been told that I need oil valves replaced for leaking possibly the heads. I found this informative. I don't work on cars. It's dripping all the way down as the techs put it. And it's been doing it a while. With extreme cold, it really became noticeable. A while back, a mechanic told me it was fine and nothing wrong.

I’ve just replaced these gaskets on the M62 in my 840Ci Sport. I thought I was as careful as I could be, given that as you know, in the E31 the back-end of the engine is tucked in right against the bulkhead and you can’t see it. I thought I was successful…..but guess what? I’ve noticed oil on the garage floor! 😢 I can’t actually see or even feel where it’s coming. So, I’m going to give your tip a go and see what happens. I don’t relish the prospect of having to pull everything apart again…..bad back! Thanks for the tip!

Hello Timm, A really helpful batch of videos - a treasure; thanks. I recently got m'self a 2000 Z3, 3.0I in pristine condition; a lucky find of this marque and the engine's not bad either☺. My first BMW and I'm getting to know it's foibles. Oil leaks; yes it has a few and I'm working my way through. First is the valve cover gasket and I'm clued up on 'how to'. Your recommendation for using the washers to help compress the buffers and gaskets is a very informative and useful tip. But my gasket is weeping oil in several places and I propose to replace it. Would you suggest that I use the SS washers to help improve the seal compression, or go with the standard replacement procedure? I ask because I'm a fan of torqing down the fixings (to BMW spec.) to achieve the same pressure all round, but I wonder if using the steel washers with a new gasket set is over egging the pudding? I'd be grateful for your advice, please.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

If it is leaking from multiple places then check the PCV valve - the crankcase should normally being run at a vacuum - if the PCV system stops working it will leak like a seive!

When I replaced gaskets and timing cover gaskets, the rubber bushings broke as soon as I turned the nut. also my valve cover gaskets had turned into hard plastic. great tip but I'm glad I did the whole job with fresh rubber and gaskets. had to replace valve stem seals anyway, so everything got refreshed. at 100k I'm expecting it to last for the rest of my ownership

I appreciate this video and gave it a go, but had to open the VC to do some other work later, just a warning using the loctite will likely cause the studs to come out vs the nuts coming off when/if you ever need to get in there again. Not the end of the world, but a bit of a pita. Changing the vcg isn't that big of a job tbh, I'd just give it a go. Hopefully only needed every 10 yrs or so, but I know the m62 is notorious for leaking vcg. Still appreciate the video.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I bought new rocker cover gaskets and seals but they are aftermarket - possibly Allmakes (I'll check them later). For the amount of work to change them, maybe it would be better to go and buy genuine. They had been replaced 120,000km ago for the previous owner. I know the mechanics and they wouldn't have used OEM parts.
