BMW X1 F48 2016 AISIN 8 speed gearbox Transmission Service

This video shows how I serviced the transmission of this 2016 BMW X1 F48 xDrive25i.
The transmission is actually made by AISIN and is also used by Volvo as the TG81 8 speed gear box.
The fill plug O-ring part number is 24278627917, it is a T55 and torqued to 45nm.
The drain plug O-ring part number is 24278627913, it is a 17mm hex and torqued to 35nm.
The oil level setting plug O-ring part number is 24278627907, it is a T40 and torqued to 8nm.
the transmission fluid is BMW ATF 6 part number 83222355599.
You will need a scanner that can read the transmission oil temperature. It needs to be between 50 and 60 Celsius when setting the level.

Thank you, sir! Following your instructions in this video I just did partial change of transmission liquid on my F46, which has the same Aisin gearbox. The car did 70k km prior to this change. I did a total of 4 replacement cycles, adding 16l of new transmission liquid, the end ratio is then 70% new and 30% old liquid. The result was immediately obvious with a smoother switching of gears, lower revs in general and less noise. In my opinion there should be a regulation in place to force car companies make gearboxes more serviceable, so that this change could be done easier and completely (like for engine oil). BMW currently declares that no such gearbox service is needed, hoping that people will just buy new cars sooner instead of maintaining ones they already have. Something to keep in mind: if you change the transmission liquid immediately after driving (like I did, since I had to drive to a specially equipped DIY garage to do it), keep in mind that the temperature of the transmission liquid will be around 100 C, so take necessary precautions when draining (esp. the first drain). Also, when setting the level at the end be aware that the oil will already be at around 60 degrees C, so draining to set the correct level has to start without any delay. The whole operation took just under 1.5h for 2 people working together. Great job, keep it up!

if you start the engine for 10 seconds with the gb drain plug out you will get another liter or so out, also i find 3 drains are required to finaly get clean ATF in the gearbox so 3 drains and a 4th fill, this should be done every 25 to 30 thousand miles

hello but the box will work without oil. won't that damage the gears?

@@drch1215 the gearbox will not operate if its in Park or Neutral, plus there would not be enought fluid for it to operate, start engine in Park, run for up to 10 seconds and about a liter of ATF fluid will come out the Gearbox drain hole

Do you have to use the specific Check ATF Level program in the scan tool, or is it enough to just know the temperature and have it in park with the engine running?

hi, the procedure is checking level at temperature while engine is running. there's no level sensor I believe.

There is a filter for this transmission as I've seen the transmission disassembled. I came here because I was looking for videos to see if it's serviceable without pulling the transmission. 100% positive there is a filter though.

@@kenkanfix not the sump plug. Looks like the sump cover based on the price & quantity indicated on the invoice. Invoice as follows:- 1. Labor fee quantity is 1 2. Gearbox sump quantity is 1(plug included) 3. Sump bolts quantity is 13 (used with item 2) 4 ATF 6 F45 quantity is 5 Your thoughts?

@@mytechnoj8529 Hi, it sounds like you have a E84 X1 (not the F48), that has a ZF gearbox, it does have filter/pan/sump that needs to replaced when servicing. Also the aluminum bolts that holds the pan to the gearbox may have stretched so they also need to be replaced.
